3 Educational Exhibition: Discover ancient coinage, at the PEDAGOGIKI Elementary School Museum Area (November June 2017) Discover ancient coinage, an exhibition organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, went on display at the Museum Area of the Pedagogiki Elementary School, in Piraeus, on Tuesday, November 15, The Exhibition takes students on a tour through the history of coinage, from the time of its invention (late 7th/early 6th century BC) through the end of the Hellenistic era (2nd century BC). The additional display of a map, graphs, explanatory texts and coin enlargements, enables students to better understand the history of coinage and adds an educational aspect to the Exhibition. Overall, 47 copies of ancient coins from the Alpha Bank Collection are on display. The Exhibition is accompanied by a three-fold information brochure. 4 Educational Exhibition: MYTH: Ancient and Contemporary Greek Art from the Alpha Bank Collections / With Ariadne s thread, the myth I unfold, at the Alpha Bank Cultural Centre - Nafplio ( ) The Bank s Art Collection and Numismatic Collection organised the educational exhibition: MYTH: Ancient and Contemporary Greek Art from the Alpha Bank Collections, at the Alpha Bank Cultural Centre in Nafplio. School students had the opportunity to discover the world of gods, heroes and mythical creatures of the ancient Greek mythology, while at the same time they learnt about the depictions of these figures on ancient coins and in works by contemporary Greek artists. An educational programme was held as part of the Exhibition, titled With Ariadne s thread, the myth I unfold, addressed to Primary and Secondary school students respectively. During 2016, the Educational Programme was attended by 681 children. Overall, 5,424 persons visited the Exhibition and participated in the Educational Programme. Online Exhibition: Athenian Owls at the website (October April 2016) In April 2016, the online exhibition Athenian Owls, jointly organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and the online museum Politismos Museum of Greek History, which started operating on October 28, 2015, was successfully concluded. The Exhibition presented the best-known coin of antiquity: the tetradrachm of the city of Athens, bearing the head of the goddess Athena on the obverse and the owl on the reverse. This coin circulated beyond the borders of its issuing authority and was widely used in international transactions over a long period of time. Overall, 2,678 persons visited the online Exhibition. 2
5 New information brochure of the Numismatic Collection (May 2016) In May 2016, the Numismatic Collection released its new, two-fold information brochure, in Greek and English. The Brochure presents the Numismatic Collection s history and activities. It is available at the Bank s Network and at various cultural venues. An interactive system for the presentation of ancient coins, Stater (May 2016) The interactive system Stater 360 2, which allows the public to become acquainted with selected ancient coins from the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, is in operation at the ALPHA BANK CULTURE store. This is an interactive application, original worldwide, which comprises a rotating metal disc on which twenty coins are represented. Visitors can view all of them magnified, at high resolution, choosing one coin at a time. They can examine each coin under a magnifying glass, read its description and use the map to locate the city that issued it, simply by touching the coin. On the nearby display, they can also read the history of the issuing authority. To see the reverse side of each coin, visitors can just flip over the disc. The interactive system Stater was presented to the public for the first time as part of the exhibition The Europe of Greece: Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection, at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, during The system s concept, design, core technology as well as the display construction aesthetics were implemented by the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), upon the request of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection. 3
6 Educational Event: Learning about Ancient Coins at the Goulandris Museum of Natural History - GAIA Centre ( ) The Goulandris Museum of Natural History - GAIA Centre and the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection jointly organised, for the first time, the educational event Learning about Ancient Coins, on Sunday, May 29, The Educational Event was addressed to children aged 6-12, who initially became acquainted with ancient coins, their iconography and minting technique, and then participated in an ancient coin production workshop, where, assisted by specialised personnel, they minted the Athenian and the Alexandrian tetradrachms in clay using die replicas. Furthermore, the children had the opportunity to design and colour their own coins drawing inspiration from ancient and contemporary themes and finally they received relevant educational material. During the Educational Event, a short film titled COIN: Invention Production Development was screened at the Museum. In this educational activity, 40 children participated overall. Educational Programme of the Numismatic Collection: Learning about Ancient Coins (February, December 2016) The educational programme Learning about Ancient Coins, addressed to Elementary School and Gymnasium students, is conducted at the permanent Exhibition Space of the Numismatic Collection at 41, Panepistimiou Street, Athens and, upon request, at schools. In 2016, the Programme was attended by: third and fourth-grade students of the Psychico College Elementary School (320 children) third-grade students of the 3rd Elementary School of Spata (25 children) The educational event Learning about Ancient Coins was also conducted, upon request, at the foundation Countrysides of the Hellenic Police, for campers aged In this educational activity, 100 campers participated overall. 4
7 Guided Tours for the Bank s Personnel at the permanent Exhibition Space of the Numismatic Collection (February, March 2016) In February and in March, 2016, a series of guided tours was conducted exclusively for the Bank s Personnel at the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection permanent Exhibition Space, to inform participants about the history of the Collection as well as the history of coinage. The tours covered the means of transaction in the pre-coin era, the adoption and evolution of coins, rarities and international currencies of antiquity, among other things. The guided tours were conducted by the Curator of the Bank s Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari. Visits and Guided Tours for Students at the permanent Exhibition Space of the Numismatic Collection (January, March, May, October 2016) The permanent Exhibition Space of the Numismatic Collection hosts organised visits, guided tours and lessons of numismatic history, conducted by the Collection s Curator Dr Dimitra Tsangari. In 2016, the Numismatic Collection hosted the following visits: Postgraduate students of Classical Archaeology from the University of Sydney, accompanied by the Acting Director of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens, Dr Stavros Paspalas ( ) Students of the Department of Archaeology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, accompanied by their Professor, Dr Panagiotis Tselekas ( ) Students of the Department of History and Archaeology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, accompanied by their Professor, Dr Helene Psoma ( ) Postgraduate students of Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh, accompanied by their Professor, Dr Keith Rutter ( ) Postgraduate students of the Belgian School at Athens, accompanied by Professor François de Callatay and the School s Assistant Manager Mr Panagiotis Iossif ( ). 5
8 During the visits, students were initially informed about the history of the Bank s Numismatic Collection, the invention and the evolution of coinage. Curator Dr Dimitra Tsangari then presented the most important and rare ancient coins, according to the seminar schedule. At the end of each visit, students were introduced to the ancient minting technique and were able to mint their own coin. Lecture at Patras: History of Coins - Achaia ( ) On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, a lecture titled History of Coins Achaia was successfully held at the amphitheatre of the Archaeological Museum of Patras, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia. The lecture was delivered by the Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, and featured two parts: the first part presented briefly the history of numismatics, including the introduction and diffusion of coins, while the second part focused on the presentation of the ancient coins of Achaia. The lecture presented the history of the main transactional means and further introduced the audience to the history and archaeological sites of Achaia, through the region s rich coinage. The event was attended by 180 persons. 6
9 BANKNOTE MUSEUM OF THE IONIAN BANK CORFU New Permanent Exhibition: Greek Banknotes: Historical Evidence (May 2016) The Banknote Museum is situated on the first floor of the historic building that housed the first Branch of the Ionian Bank in Corfu, in In May 2016, the new permanent Exhibition was launched. The Exhibition presents the complete series of all types of paper money that were issued throughout the history of the Greek State: banknotes, coin notes and related material, spanning 180 years of history. Key events in Greece s history, which are directly linked to the circulation of currency, are presented in chronological order at the permanent Exhibition Space housed in the Museum. The visit starts with the bond notes in piastre, issued by the Provisional Government of Greece in 1822, and the phoenix banknote issued by Ioannis Kapodistrias in It ends with the last banknotes issued in drachmas, which were withdrawn in 2002 with the introduction of the euro. Throughout June 2016, free guided tours of the Exhibition were conducted every Saturday and Sunday. In total, 6,125 persons visited the Museum in New Publication: Greek Banknotes: Historical Evidence (May 2016) The exhibition Greek Banknotes: Historical Evidence is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue in Greek and English, featuring introductory texts, entries and rich visual material for all exhibits. The catalogue is available at: The Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank in Corfu and The ALPHA BANK CULTURE store (40, Stadiou Str., ATHENS, Tel.: ). 7
10 New information brochure: Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank (May 2016) In May 2016, a new, two-fold brochure of the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank was released, in Greek and English. The Brochure presents the Museum s history and activities and is available at the Bank s Network and at various cultural venues. New Educational Programme: Banknote - the Greek Banknote (October 2016) The new educational programme Banknote the Greek Banknote got under way as part of the new permanent exhibition Greek Banknotes: Historical Evidence, that is on display at the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank in Corfu. The Educational Programme aims at getting students acquainted with the history of coinage, highlighting Greek banknotes that were produced from the foundation of the Greek State (1830) until the arrival of the Euro (2002). Two booklets were designed especially for this Programme, tailored to the needs of the two different grade levels (Elementary School and Gymnasium). Serving as support material in the implementation of Exhibition research activities, the booklets are distributed to students. Participation in the Programme is free of charge.
