2 1876 Large Over Small Date Liberty Seated Half Dollar By Dennis Fortier LSCC 2016, PVCC 775 The 1876, WB-106, Large over Small Date (Double Date) was first publicized in Wiley/Bugert s Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, Since then, to Bill Bugert s knowledge, less than a dozen have been found. I was fortunate enough to spot a nice original high grade example a few months ago and look forward to submitting it for grading soon. The 1876-P is one of the most common dates in the series (mintage 8,419,150) and thereby often overlooked by collectors. Several common date issues have rare or scarce varieties and time spent looking at many examples can sometime bear fruit. Despite being included in Wiley/Bugert s 1993 work the 1876 Large over Small Date is not generally well known. As stated in Wiley/Bugert, under the prominent date are the remnants of another 1876 date punched lower and to the right. The smaller gang punch used was not a half dollar gang punch nor was it a quarter dollar gang punch that much is sure. The most noticeable diagnostic is the remnants of the small 8 inside the upper loop of the prominent 8. On closer inspection it can be observed that the top of the small 1 is just to the right of the large 1, and in, around, and over the top portion of the prominent 6 are the remnants of the small 6. The reverse die is a type 1, open bud reverse with its large mintage is full of blundered dates and adventure for dedicated collectors. Acquiring rare and interesting coins is half the fun of our hobby, but it s the hunt that keeps us going. Common dates offer the challenge of looking at many ugly ducklings but also the thrill of finding a diamond in the rough. Nothing beats a good cherry pick, good hunting. Kennedy Half Dollar - Kennedy half instantly popular with collectors The shot heard around the world in 1963, a bullet from an assassin's weapon that ended the life of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, is still remembered on the annually produced half dollar struck in his honor. As far as collectors are concerned, the shot cut short not only the life of a U.S. president, but also the 15-year-old series of Franklin half dollars introduced in By law, the designs of circulating coins are not supposed to change in less than 25 years without congressional approval. Emotions ran high and Kennedy's effigy quickly replaced that of Franklin's on the obverse of the half dollar beginning in 1964 by an act of Congress. The prototype for the obverse and reverse of the Kennedy half dollar was the inaugural medal. The half dollar obverse design is the work of U.S. Mint Chief Sculptor-Engraver Gilroy Roberts. The reverse is an interpretation of the Great Seal of the President by Sculptor-Engraver Frank Gasparro. The 1964 Kennedy half dollar was eagerly sought by souvenir hunters, collectors and those nostalgic of the "Kennedy era." The coins were hoarded by speculators despite a mintage exceeding 273 million from the Philadelphia Mint and an additional 156 million from the Denver Mint, compared to just more than 89 million half dollar coins from both Mints combined a year earlier when Franklin's portrait was used. Demand and an effort to place coins into circulation were primary reasons for the more than 429 million 1964 and 1964-D Kennedy half dollars. Production dropped dramatically, to about 65.8 million, in Another situation, however, brought even more interest to the 1964 issue. In 1964 the coins were struck of.900 fine silver. This precious metal content was decreased to.400 fine in The.400 fine silver continued through All circulation-strike Kennedy half dollars since 1971 have been struck of coppernickel composition. All other circulating U.S. coins previously struck in silver were changed to copper-nickel composition beginning in The rising price of silver bullion was the later catalyst for the "great silver melt" of the late 1970s through March 27, 1980, when the price of silver collapsed. Silver 1964 Kennedy half dollars are still typically priced based on the spot price of silver. Despite the fact there are "key date" Kennedy half dollars based on mintage figures, no one knows for certain just how many coins and of what dates and Mint marks were destroyed by melting during the tumultuous 1970s. The Bicentennial reverse depicting Independence Hall is by Seth G. Huntington, whose design was chosen in a design contest. The Bicentennial coin issue is unique in U.S. numismatic history. It is the only circulation issue (quarter dollars, half dollars and dollars) with two dates appearing together. It is one of the few times coins have been struck in another year other than that appearing on the coin (1975 and 1976 coins are dated ). As with the 1964 Kennedy half dollar, the Bicentennial half dollar has been commonly hoarded. Many non-collectors believe these coins may someday become very valuable. Even a type set of Kennedy half dollars is of interest. A circulation strike type set would include a.900 fine silver coin of 1964,.400 fine silver coin of 1965 to 1970, Bicentennial reverse coin of and a copper-nickel clad composition coin of 1971 to 1974 and

3 1977 to date. An Uncirculated type coin collector might also want to consider a 1971 to 1977 Philadelphia Mint coin without Mint mark and a coin from 1980 to date with the P Mint mark for the Philadelphia Mint. The suggested set excludes all Proof coins, varieties and errors. The key dates to the series, according to mintage figures, are 1970-D, 1987-P and 1987-D coins. Each of these dates was only available in Souvenir Mint sets. Each of the 1987 coins was also available in Uncirculated Souvenir sets sold over the counter at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints. None of these three dates were officially issued for circulation. Since 2002, the Kennedy half dollar has not been struck for circulation. Circulation-quality Kennedy halves have been struck only for collectors and sold as numismatic products in rolls and bags. Collectors seek a number of varieties, errors and other rarities in the Kennedy series. Among these are off-metal strikes between 1964 and 1970 when the coins were still made with silver. As an example, 1965 Kennedy half dollars are known struck in.900 fine silver. There are doubled die coins, coins with re-punched Mint marks of varying clarity, dates struck in Proof only, coins without the designer's initials (probably due to over polished dies) and die varieties. There was some speculation during 1976 among collectors whether the presidential seal reverse would be resumed beginning in It was. Kennedy half dollars of every date have also been struck in Proof. During the Bicentennial coinage Proofs were struck in copper-nickel clad as well as in.400 fine silver. Beginning in 1992, the Kennedy half dollar has been struck in 90 percent silver and offered in a special silver Proof set for the collector market. In 1998 the silver version was struck in a Matte Finish. Since 2005 a Satin Finish version has been produced bearing both the P and D Mint marks for Uncirculated Mint sets. The half dollar denomination is not used as often in commerce as other denominations. This has periodically brought about discussions of possibly abolishing the denomination. For most collectors, the big question is whether the US Mint will do something special to commemorate the coin s 50 th anniversary this fall. So far there has only been speculation. AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT DENNIS FORTIER: The past two meetings have been very well attended. In February we had 31 attendees, and last month saw 37 members and guests in attendance, filling the room to almost overflowing. That I believe is the best attendance we have had since I joined the club back in While this is gratifying it presents some challenges. The reasons for our growing attendance are several. The efforts of members and officers to promote the club both on a one-to-one basis and through more public means. Newer members replacing older members are more inclined to attend meetings. Better raffle and door prizes, and if I may: meetings running to meet member satisfaction. In a way we are victims of our success. Parking is becoming an issue as well as room for all the attendees; and the duties of the club Treasurer have become too much for one person at the meeting. The financial success the club has enjoyed over the past several years is due to the rent free use we have of the Stonington Arms Recreation Room. I am loathe to give it up. Therefore I have embarked on a plan to address the issues that face us and keep us in our home for as long as possible. Parking: We are confined to parking in the center area and not near the apartments where the residents need the space for their vehicles. I plan to meet with the building manager (Cindy) who has been very supportive of the club over the years to see which parking spots near selected units are not in use and will not affect the residence. I plan to ask individual members who are ambulatory regular attendees who do not carry lots of supplies and coins into the meeting to use the specified spots near apartments. Room space: I will supervise the dismantling of the tables in the room for the meeting and we will reassemble them for the residents after the meeting. Help in this will be needed on a regular basis, please lend a hand on both ends of the meeting. Treasure s duties: After consulting with club Treasurer Bill Jacobik, Bill asked club member Cal Mellor to assist with raffle ticket sales which will free Bill to concentrate on his other duties. Thank you Cal for stepping up to lend a hand. With so many newer member and attendees it is worth mentioning as often as possible some of the rules and governance that keep our little group happy and friendly. 1. Park in the center areas away from the units (unless asked by a club officer to park in a specified location) 2. Sign in when you come in so we have a good idea of attendance and know who is there. Many members have coveted numismatic items at the meeting and we like to keep our group a close knit community who are known to all and look out for one another and their possessions. 3. Help take down and put up tables, as well as arrange chairs.

4 4. Take your conversation or business out to the entry way. Other members are trying to listen or present. Nothing is ruder then having people talk while a meeting is going on. I will be vigilant in this matter. The May meeting will have Cal Mellor presenting a talk on British Pre-Decimal coinage and terms, I m looking forward to it.
