3 INTRODUCTION The St. Clair Bayfield Collection was donated to The Billy Rose - T h e a t r e i;ollection, 'The New ~ore Public Library, Februamm, by.the estate of Mrs. St. Clair Bayfield. An earlier donation by Mrs. Bayfield was combined with this gift to make the complete collection. The material arrived in good condition and included two recordings of Mr. Bayfield in performance. The recordings were turned over.to the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound. A scrapbook of Florence Foster Jenkins and an address book of the Verdi Club were given to the Music Division. 6 scrapbooks, correspondence,diaries, photographs and other papers were retained in The Billy Rose Theatre Collection and have been arranged in h series. Duplicate material was removed from the collection.

4 BIOGRAPHY St. Clair Bayfield (John St. Clair Roberts) was born August 2, F -- in Cheltenham, England. He received his theatri~xtfaining~xthe-~repertory companies of Sir Herbert Beerbohm-Tree, Charles Hawtrey and Ben Greet. Mr. Bayfield was a character actor and was known for his many Shakespearean roles. He appeared in ROMEO AXD JULIET, THE TAMIXG OF THE SHREW, HAMLET, BULLDOG DRUMMOND, JUDGXE8T DAY, COQUETTE, CAPTAIN BRASSBOUND'S CONVERSION (directed by George Bernard Shaw) and FATHER MALACHY'S MIRACLE. Mr. Bayfield also directed several Shakespearean plays. After Nr. Bayfield died on May 9, 967 his vlaov, Nrs. Kathleen Bayfield, helped to establish an annual award in his name.
