VOYAGER North Star* Liberal Arts / Creative Writing & Literature vol. 8.7 * Jinny Beyer Quilt Pattern October 24, 2018 SKALD '18 COVER CAPTURES FIRST PLACE! The student staff of SKALD '18 used Dee Ann Stachowski's ART HISTORY COLLAGE as a striking image to celebrate the contents of last year's student literary-art magazine. Now the Columbia Scholastic Press Association has announced the winners from its 35 th Gold Circle Awards program. This year, these categories attracted 4,979 yearbook and digital media entries and 6514 print news and magazines. These entries came from publications produced by students at colleges, universities, and secondary schools through the United States and abroad who follow the American education plan. Receiving First Place Honors for Cover Design were Villa's SKALD team: of designers: Travis Springer, Shelby Braidich and Emily Kaczynski. Springer graduated in 2018 with a B.F.A in Graphic Design while Braidich and Kaczynski are continuing their studies in the Graphic Design program. 1
Thursday, November 1, 2018 Library 11 AM - 1 PM To celebrate the NCTE s National Day on Writing, Villa s Poets & Writers will explore and reveal Why We Write. Join the Creative Writing and Literature, English, and Digital Filmmaking programs for readings by the students, including SKALD writers. 2
CORE VALUE: TRANSFORMATION TELL YOUR STORY & TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE As many writers have found the act of writing is not only a wonderful tool to help you understand yourself but can also be an incredible mechanism for personal growth. When you write, you reach deep inside yourself and pull out whatever it is inside you. From the words or images bubbling up on the surface of your psyche, to the emotions and thoughts and stories lurking in the far reaches of your consciousness. As you reach inside and look for the right word(s) to best describe your emotions and thoughts, writing guides you to become clear. The process of writing, whether in a journal, memoir, blog post or essay is a process that helps to digest feelings in order to understand them from a broader perspective. Although writing can be a very personal and intimate act, for those who love the craft of writing, long for the creative expression of writing or are simply compelled to write, there seems to be no greater relief than to honor the thoughts and feelings that beg to spill out onto a page. From The Writing Cooperative by Bridgette Jackson-Buckley 3
Student Writer Awards up to $1,500 Celebrate this year s National Day on Writing by nominating your best student writing for the Norton Writer s Prize. First place award $1,500, and two runners-up $1,000 each. All entries considered for publication by W. W. Norton. Read previous years winning essays, print the flier for display in your department, and submit your students best writing for a chance to be on the list of 2019 prizewinners. We look forward to reading and publishing your students work! CONTACT YOUR WRITING INSTRUCTORS if you feel you have exemplary work! 4

THE VILLA BOOK PROJECT SET #2 SANDRA REICIS, Professor Interior Design The Alice Network by Kate Quinn an historical novel about the real-life Alice Network a group of British female spies operating in German occupied France during World War I and then following into the aftermath of World War II. Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly This is historical fiction based on the true story of Caroline Ferriday and the Polish women who survived the Ravensbrook Concentration Camp. Paris by Edward Rutherfurd A multi-generational historical novel based in Paris it s both a romance and a thriller. Sisters of Fortune: America s Caton Sisters at Home and Abroad by Jehanne Wake This is the story of 4 sisters and their lives in America and English society. They were the original Dollar Princesses. Before the Victorian era. I loved the way the book wove American, Canadian, English and French history together as the sisters and their families travelled, married and socialized in the world of aristocracy, royalty and politics. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon set in Barcelona, this is both a romance and a thriller and it all starts with a book. I would 9
love to recommend this to the students who are planning to travel to Barcelona in May. DARBY RATLIFF, Admissions Counselor The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann DR. WILL MEYER, Assistant Professor, Social Sciences Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer (2013, Milkweed Editions, Minneapolis) Wisdom Sits in Places: Landscape and Language among the Western Apache by Keith H. 11 "Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul, the soul of the person who wrote it and the soul of those who read it and lived it and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens. " Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Shadow of the Win Zafron is the author of the trilogy THE CEMETERY OF FORGOTTEN BOOKS (The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel's Game and The Prisoner of Heaven). He says, "Authors are often asked why they do what they do. Often by themselves, as they sit wondering why they didn t become corporate lawyers or dentists or arms dealers. Why do we choose this strange profession that would rank right below the vocational do-gooder in a list of the least-likely-to-bring-success occupations in the world? I can t 11
speak for my colleagues, but as far as I am concerned, I write because I really have no other choice. This is what I do. This is what I am. I am in the business of storytelling. I always have been, always will be. It is what I ve been doing since I was a kid. Telling stories, making up tales, bringing life to characters, devising plots, visualizing scenes and staging sequences of events, images, words and sounds that tell a story. All in exchange for a penny, a smile or a tear, and a little of your time and attention." 12
