4 4 Abstract Travel literature or travel writing is currently a prolific, dynamic and socially important genre. Profoundly shaped by legacies of the colonial era, when travel writing was a central medium for the circulation of ideas and attitudes around the world, the form has recently burgeoned and undergone significant reinvention in response to postcolonialism and globalisation. There is a rigorous debate about the change in travel writing as it is increasingly considered to be a response to modern, post- or neo-colonial era. Also, there is a discussion on travel literature as a vital medium of cross-cultural contact and exchange in our increasingly globalised world with an emphasis on travelling, touring or mobile cultures. Yet, there is not sufficient discussion about addressing the theory, theme and practice of travel in different literary genres, especially the genre of novel, as a form of transgression as travel involves the experience of voyaging out, to use a phrase from Virginia Woolf. This voyaging out, indeed, involves several forms of transgressions not only geographical, territorial or cultural but also emotional, personal, familial, linguistic, political, economic, religious, and moral. Indeed, these transgressions make the traveller undergo self-discovery and self-knowledge as emerged from corroborating or clashing of cultures. This course examines the representation of travel and transgressions in English literature from nineteenth-century colonial times to the twentieth-century post imperial era. It will give participants a thorough grounding in both the theory of travel and the theme of travel in English literature. Attendees will be introduced to the key debates associated with different genres and the principal methodologies and modes of scholarly analysis. Topics to be explored will include travel and gender, travel and modernity, travel and colonial exploitation as well as violence, travel and migration, travel as transforming or reinventing the self, travel and orientalism, travel and changing cultural stereotypes, travel as self-knowledge, travel as discovery and exploration vis-à-vis travel as a life-changing experience, travel as (mis)adventure, travel and hybridity, and cultures of travel. By drawing upon the theories, concepts and interpretation of travel by James Clifford and Ian Thompson in relation to different forms of transgressions, the course focuses on representative works of literature which reveal the experience of travel from various perspectives. In order to deeply examine the phenomena of travel, special attention will be paid to the emergence of cultural encounters, clash and overlapping in heterogeneous countries and continents as surfaced in the realms of fiction rooted in colonial as well as post - colonial settings. Since travel is argued to be inextricably intertwined with the idea of cultural and individual change, the course aims to interpret the concept of travel with reference to the categories of travellers and their motifs in the realms of literature. By critically analysing the character of the traveller in a foreign culture and location and the impact of travel on his or her imagination and perception of the world, the course also seeks to underline the significance of travel in comprehending other cultures in relation to the traveling self as represented within the frames of literature. By the end of this course, students are able to develop insight not only into the types of

5 5 travellers and their development in a plotline but the different dimensions of travel in the field of English literature. Lastly, they are able to trace historical developments in 19 th and 20 th century England and its colonies through the metaphors of travel in selected genres. Travel and Literature - Key Reading: 1.
