1 Lahore University of Management Sciences ENGL Early 20 th Century British and Irish Fiction: Self and Society Fall 2017 Instructor Rabia Nafees Shah Room No. 125 HSS Wing- English (Ground Floor) Office Hours rabia.nafees@lums.edu.pk Telephone 2218 Secretary/TA TA Office Hours Course URL (if any) COURSE BASICS Credit Hours 3 Lecture(s) 2 lectures per Duration 1hr 50mins week COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will introduce students to some key modernist texts of English and Irish origin, our discussions of which will address issues such as the role of nation and empire, the encounter with the colonized space and its inhabitants, race, class, gender, sexuality, the devastating effects of War I, the power of the state vis a vis the individual, the role of the machine and technologies of oppression. We will also confront the modernist artist s increasingly complex articulations of the self. The first half of the course traces broad social systems (imperialistic, utopian or dystopian) that impinge upon the individual and the second moves deeper inward as modernist writers respond directly and indirectly to the influences of psychology to develop new techniques and forms of expression in the spirit of experimentalism which was a defining feature of modernism. The mechanization or sedation of the human spirit is challenged by the power of instinct and the unconscious. Thus, self and society are read in relation to each other. The course will begin with an introduction to the concept of modernity and literary modernism so previous background in these areas is not a prerequisite for taking the class, although it could be helpful. COURSE PRE-REQUISITE None. GOALS - To ground the students in an understanding of modernist fiction in its English and Irish manifestations. - To illuminate the cultural, historical and literary contexts within which modernist literature took shape. - To build an appreciation of the distinctive style, artistic and thematic concerns of each writer in the course.
2 - To allow students an opportunity to present their own interpretations of the texts through class discussions, response papers, presentations and the final research essay and thus develop their critical faculties. GRADING 1. Presentation 15% 2. Midterm 25% 3. Class Participation 15% 4. Response Papers 15% 5. Final Paper (8 pages) 30% Lahore University of Management Sciences TEXTBOOKS Reading packages have been put together for the course LECTURES, TUTORIALS AND ATTENDANCE POLICY 1.
