1 » CONFERENCE E N C E REPORTS R The 27th Chinese Control Conference (CCC 08) Digital Object Identifier /MCS The opening ceremony of the 27th Chinese Control Conference with over 600 in attendance. The 27th Chinese Control Conference (CCC 08) was held on July 16 18, 2008 at the Yun An Conference Resort, Kunming, Yunan Province, China. Kunming is a beautiful city known as the Spring City because of its spring-like climate all year round. Yunan Province is home to 26 minority groups of China, including Tibetan, Naxi, Bai, and Dai. The rich local culture heritage made the CCC 08 colorful. The Technical Committee on Control Theory (TCCT) of the Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) is the permanent sponsor of the annual Chinese Control Conference (CCC). Information on current and past CCCs can be found in the Web site of the TCCT at: Kunming Uni versity of Science and Technology and the Yunnan Division of the CAA are the local sponsors of CCC 08, who were responsible for local organization of the conference. The conference is also cosponsored by the IEEE Control System Society (CSS), the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), Japan, the Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems (ICROS), Korea, IEEE CSS Singapore Chapter, the Institute of Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University, and the Control, and Automation and Instrumentation Division of Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. The conference attracted a record number of 744 attendees and approximately 220 companions, including 52 participants from outside China. Many attendees brought their families with them to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the colorful culture of Yunnan. TECHNICAL PROGRAMS There were 2435 submissions to CCC 08. From these submissions, 1026 papers were accepted and Tsu-Tian Lee delivers his plenary talk Research on Intelligent Transportation Systems in Taiwan. included in the conference proceedings, which were published in seven hardcopy volumes (ISBN: ), as well as in a CD-ROM (ISBN: ). The rate of acceptance was 42%. The Proceedings of the 27th Chinese Control Conference will be included in the IEEE Conference Publication Prog ra m w it h t he IEEE cat a log number CFP0840A. There were 74 parallel oral sessions, 14 of which were invited, comprised of 423 papers, and four poster sessions with 309 papers. Five of the oral sessions were English sessions, where all papers were represented in English. Papers in other sessions could be presented either in English or in Chinese. Five plenary speeches on timely topics were delivered. These plenary sessions were chaired by Xiaoming Hu, Hanfu Chen, Jie Huang, Jun Zhao, and Qiancuan Zhao, respectively. AWARDS Two awards were presented at the 27th CCC, the 14th Guan Zhao-Zhi Award and the 3rd Poster Paper Award. The winning paper for the 14th Guan ZhaoZhi Award was Global Disturbance Rejection of Lower Triangular Systems with Unknown Exosystem by Lu Liu from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The winning paper for the 3rd Poster Award was Quantum System Schmidt Decomposition and Its Geometric Analysis by Shuang Cong and Xianyong Feng from the University of Science and Technology of China. The panelists were Minyue Fu from University of Newcastle, Australia; Yiguang Hong from Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; Xiaoming Hu from Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden; Jie Huang from Chinese University of Hong Kong, China; Wei Kang from the Naval Postgraduate School, USA; and Lihua Xie from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The plenary panel discussion was organized and moderated by B.M. Chen and Z.P. Jiang. Many questions, which especially concern graduate students Hidenori Kimura delivers his plenary talk A New Neural Computation Scheme of Unsupervised Learning with Applications to Robot Biped Locomotion. and how to deal with the relationship between studying books and carrying out research (reading and writing papers), were raised and discussed. The panelists offered many thoughtful views. CONFERENCE WORKSHOP Chongkug Park at the CCC 08 VIP Party, a dinner party with a large performance of national singing and dancing Ji Xin Yan Wu. and young researchers, such as how to improve their research ability, how to find proper research topics, A conference workshop titled Voice of Control Workshop for Editors and Researchers in the Field of Control Science was held. Invited speeches and discussion among editors and researchers were arranged. Editors from 11 journals, including Acta Automatica Sinica, Aerospace Control and Application, Control and Decision, Control Engineering of China, Information and Control, International Journal of Automation and Computing, Journal of Control Theory and Applications, Journal of Systems Science and Complexity, Journal of Systems Science and Mathematical Sciences, Robot, and Science in China, attended this workshop. The invited speakers provided valuable advice on how domestic periodicals could promote the development of control science. The editors discussed tips for preparing good papers. 4 Committees, and Chongkug Park, the honorary president of ICROS attended the conference. During the conference a meeting was held to discuss the collaboration between TCCT and SICE. Delegates from SICE and from TCCT had a fruitful discussion and several collaborations were proposed. Shinji Hara and Chongkug Park also delivered warm speeches at the closing ceremony. SPECIAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT A special fund was set up to provide financial support for the delegates from the area hit by the recent May 12 Wenchuan earthquake to attend the conference. POST-CONFERENCE TOURS Home to the 26 minority groups of China, Yunnan not only has beautiful scenery with a pleasant climate but also is rich in culture heritage. The conference organized post-conference tours in six different areas in Kunming, including Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Xishuangbanna, and Ruili. CLOSING REMARKS The success of the conference was due to the efforts of many people, including the attendees, authors, and members of the conference committees. A 95-member program committee undertook the job of advertising the conference, handling paper reviews, compiling the final program, and editing the book of abstracts and the proceedings. Eight program regional chairs, who were appointed for this year s CCC, were responsible for promoting the conference within their respective regions and for organizing invited sessions. The next CCC will be held jointly with the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control in Shanghai as CDC-CCC 09. At the closing ceremony, Shaoyuan Li, Vice-Chair of the TCCT, reported on the progress of the preparation work for CDC- CCC 09 and extended a warm invitation to colleagues all over the world to contribute to this grand event. Daizhan Cheng and Fenghong Xiang Program Chairs Zongli Lin U.S. Regional Chair The 23rd Youth Automation Conference of the Chinese Association of Automation (YAC 08) The 23rd Youth Automation Conference (YAC) of Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) was held on October 17 19, 2008, in Wuhan, Hubei Province. The conference was held under the auspices of the CAA, the Youth Working Committee of CAA, the Department of Control Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the School of Automotive Engineering of Wuhan University of Technology.
