Whereas the other tables present a vote by vote description of each election, the complexity of these two are such that such a table would be more confusing than informative. In both cases, the election involved a battle between the two segments of a bitterly divided Republican Party. As a result, neither Republican faction nor the Democratic candidate were able to muster enough votes to win. In order to allow the legislators some flexibility in their personal lives during these marathon events, a practice known as pairing came into use whereby a legislator could absent himself from a session if he could get a supporter of the opposition to agree to absent himself as well. In so doing, each legislator involved could avoid giving an advantage to the other side. Efforts to make up a chart showing pairings, absences, and refusals to vote when present makes it virtually impossible to track the ebb and flow of the votes. Accordingly this chart in most cases shows non-voting members as supporting the candidate for which they cast their vote immediately prior to their absenting themselves from the process. In a number of cases, notably during the 34th ballot, many if not all of those who failed to vote appear to have been awaiting the results of the efforts to strike a compromise before commiting themselves to a new candidate. All of those not voting on the 35th ballot have been identified. The 1881 Senatorial election demonstrated the growing strength of industrialists in the Pennsylvania Republican Party. The candidate of the aging Cameron machine was Henry Oliver, Jr., a prominent Pittsburgh steel baron who had dabbled in local politics. The candidate of the Liberal Republicans was Galusha Grow, who was active in lumber and oil and had only recently returned from Texas where he had been a railroad president. The Democrat candidate was incumbent Senator William Wallace. It was soon apparent that the election was deadlocked.by the beginning of the second week of balloting, questions were being raised about the possibility of new nominations. When no breakthrough manifested itself by the beginning of the third week, Oliver withdrew his name and was replaced by James Beaver, a Civil War hero who had declined the vice-presidency under James Garfield and had been an active promoter of Penn State University. Grow withdrew after one more ballot and was replaced by Thomas Bayne, an Allegheny County resident and a member of the U. S. House of Representatives. Very little changed. A few Oliver supporters switched to Bayne and a handful of Grow men voted for Beaver but the stalemate continued. Grow reappeared briefly but was no more successful than he had been in the early votes and once again withdrew. After an-
2 other two weeks of deadlock, it became evident to all concerned that neither candidate was electable. Both factions then agreed on John Mitchell, a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from Tioga County with few if any connections with either faction. He reluctantly agreed for the good of the party and served one term, State Senate 1 Philadelphia (Part) Smith, George Handy Rep 2 Philadelphia (Part) Cochran, John Dem Wallace (1-34), Not voting (35) 3 Philadelphia (Part) Gordon, James Gay Dem Wallace (1-20, 22-35) 4 Philadelphia (Part) Jones, Horatio Gates Rep Oliver (1-21), Welsh (22-24), Beaver (25-34), Mitchell (35) 5 Philadelphia (Part) Reyburn, John E.
