2 James W. Wallace collection of Joseph Wallace papers Creator: Wallace, James W boxes, 9 lin. feet Abstract This collection contains the papers of Joseph Wallace, a Harrisburg merchant and lawyer of the mid-nineteenth century. Material in the collection relates primarily to his mercantile and legal practices. Wallace s business partnerships with Elder and Graydon are also represented in the collection. Mercantile material documents prices of items in the years following the War of 1812 into the 1850s. Background note Joseph Wallace, was a merchant, lawyer and deputy secretary/treasurer of Pennsylvania. Wallace worked in Harrisburg and his legal and mercantile careers reflect local issues of the mid-nineteenth century. Wallace also served as the treasurer of the Borough of Harrisburg, , and of other organizations including the Harrisburg Hope Fire Company and the Peters Mountain Turnpike Company. Scope & content These papers cover Joseph Wallace s partnership with Joshua Elder and give information on trade prices and commodities between Philadelphia and Harrisburg in the early nineteenth century. Legal clients of Joseph Wallace include his son-in-law Dr. William C. McPherson, James Emerson, several Elders, John Rhoads, James Wilson (an absconding debtor), Mary Kelso, and others. A small amount of Joseph Wallace s papers relate to his business as secretary/treasurer of Pennsylvania. The collection is arranged in four series. The first contains the papers of Joseph Wallace and is subdivided by document type. Series two and three contain the papers of Wallace and his business partners. The second series, Wallace and Elder, contains the material of the two merchants and is also divided into sections according to type of material. The papers of Wallace and Graydon are the third series and contain various real estate documents. The final series contains miscellaneous items that do not relate to any of the previously mentioned series. These items are primarily miscellaneous bills and a small portion of the series relates to Wallace s ancestors. 1
