1 ADVANCED PLACEMENT UNITED STATES HISTORY MOUNT DE SALES ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR: MICHELLE NATALE WELCOME TO APUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COURSE OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION: This year long, college-level course prepares students to take and successfully complete the May 2019 AP exam in United States History. This two-semester survey of American History begins at the age of exploration/discovery and extends to modern times. Interpretation of historic documents, primary sources, and literary influences take place in every class. There will be subjective and objective assessments. Moreover, this course places an inordinate emphasis on reading, writing, and analysis, as well as the political, economic, religious, social, intellectual and artistic (military as well), aspects of American history. In addition, this course will emphasize the following themes: (i) Americanism and diversity, (ii) citizenship and immigration, (iii) social and cultural conflicts, (iv) reform movements, (v) economics and politics, (vi) civil and foreign wars, (vii) diplomacy and globalization. These broad parameters will be used to structure the course. Together, we will discover and demonstrate the inextricable link between these themes and the development of 500 years of American history. This class can be tough at times. However, AP classes are well worth the effort. Studies show that even students who score a 1 or 2 are TWICE as likely to finish college. They are also TWICE AS LIKELY to receive an A their first year. Therefore, we will attack the tasks with ardor and vigor. Many people, especially high school students, cannot enthusiastically articulate the vibrancy and noteworthiness of American history. Therefore, this class will go beyond a discernable group of facts. They will learn historic interpretation and synthesis. They will demonstrate verbal and written cognition on American History. In sum, according to the College Board, The AP program in United States History is designed to provide these students with the analytic skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in United States history. The program prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon them equivalent to those made by full-year introductory college courses. TEXTBOOKS: 1. The American Pageant, A History of the Republic, by Kennedy, Cohen, and Bailey, Houghton, Mifflin Company- 16 th edition 2. READER---The American Spirit by Kennedy and Bailey, Houghton, Mifflin Company- this remains in the classroom- Volumes 1 and 2 3. Fast Track to a 5- to accompany The American Pageant- this is the most current edition 1

2 SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT(s): 1. READ AND OUTLINE THE FIRST 4 CHAPTERS OF THE AMERICAN PAGEANT. This will be our first unit for the first four weeks of school. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TURN IN A TYPED OUTLINE This practice is just for your benefit so that we can cover these chapters in the first four weeks. We cover approximately 1 chapter- or 1 ½ chapters per week. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE unless we miss class time. THIS IS NOT AN ASSIGNMENT THAT YOU HAVE TO HAND IN MANY STUDENTS WANT TO START READING THE TEXT. 2. PLEASE CHOOSE ONE BOOK FROM THE FOLLOWING LIST. (YOU CANNOT READ A BOOK THAT YOU HAVE READ OR WILL READ IN ENGLISH CLASS!) Please WRITE A SUMMARY PAPER- at least 5 paragraphs-2-3 PAGES- INCLUDE A THESIS STATEMENT WHICH SETS THE PARADIGM FOR YOUR PAPER- IF THERE IS NO THESIS your grade begins at a C The reason I must insist on this is because on the AP EXAM if the exam readers do not find a thesis statement---they will give you an automatic score of a 0-1 Please trust me when I tell you you do not want this outcome THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER! THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER - THIS IS A BOOK SUMMARY. When you write this summary of the book- examine and write about some of the political, social, economic or religious aspects of the book.
