3 Biographical Sketch: The material in the William J. Yarber Papers relates to the career of Arthur L. Fortnoff. Arthur L. Fortnoff joined the Bell Aircraft Corporation on September 9, 1935, just two years after the company was founded. He worked in the helicopter sales division of the corporation and eventually rose to the position of Assistant to the Director of the Commercial Sales Department. Fortnoff spent 43 years as an employee of Bell and retired in 1970 as the oldest employee in terms in service. In 1971 Fortnoff founded the National Heliport Standards Committee (NHSC) to develop the use of helicopters and helicopter facilities in urban settings. He was the first executive director of the NHSC. Fortnoff was a firm believer in the potential of urban helicopter use and devoted time and effort to increase the visibility of urban heliports in the American conscious. Sources William J. Scope and Content Note The William J. Yarber Collection covers material relating to Arthur Fortnoff s work with Bell Helicopter Textron and the National Helicopter Standards Committee. The material in the collection includes Bell corporate promotional and sales material, operator manuals for Bell helicopters, reports and presentations on the use of helicopters in urban areas, governmental reports on the environmental and safety effects of helicopter operations, state, city, and county ordinances related to heliport operation, activities of the National Heliport Standards Committee, and files on the construction of heliports in various cities, states, and territories of the United States of America. 3
