1 SEMESTER AT SEA COURSE SYLLABUS Colorado State University, Academic Partner Voyage: Fall 2018 Discipline: Sociology Course Number and Title: SOC 371 Symbolic Interaction Division: Upper Faculty Name: Murat Ergin Semester Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisites: The standard Colorado State University prerequisite of one (1) lower division general sociology course or permission of instructor. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course examines everyday life as symbolic interaction from a micro-sociological point of view. Many sociological studies employ macro-level theoretical tools, concepts, and perspectives to understand social phenomena. Our goal in this course is to focus on theories and research that approach society in more grounded and bottom-up ways. Building on the observation that social reality emerges in daily interactions from bottom to top, we will look at our taken-for-granted and seemingly private experiences in everyday life and explore the ways in which larger forces and processes, such as gender, race, ethnicity, and class, are intertwined with the micro aspects of everyday life. In the first part of the course, you will learn about qualitative research strategies that can be applied in studying everyday life and the literature on everyday life, especially focusing on symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, phenomenology, and social constructionism. In the second part, we will examine different aspects of daily life using the methodological and theoretical tools introduced in the previous two sections. The main premise of the course is that reality emerges in situations that are neither structural nor individual, but are a combination of both. Therefore, we will conduct a number of social experiments in different countries and settings in order to observe how reality in each situation is sensitive to contextual variation. LEARNING OBJECTIVES -To understand how the meaning of reality is constructed from the bottom up. -To understand how micro processes in reality construction is contextually dependent and historically variable. -To identify major sociological theories on everyday life and apply them to specific cases. -To explain how gender, class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other categories of inequality play a role in the construction of reality. -To be able to critically evaluate original sociological research on symbolic interaction and everyday life in a variety of global contexts. 1

7 Arrive San Diego, California December 23 FIELD WORK Semester at Sea field experiences allow for an unparalleled opportunity to compare, contrast, and synthesize the different cultures and countries encountered over the course of the voyage. In addition to the one field class, students will complete independent field assignments that span multiple countries. Field Class & Assignment The field class for this course is on Monday, 3 December in Kobe, Japan. Field Class attendance is mandatory for all students enrolled in this course. Do not book individual travel plans or a Semester at Sea sponsored trip on the day of your field class. Field Classes constitute at least 20% of the contact hours for each course, and are developed and led by the instructor. Field Class & Assignment Cool Japan Usually defined as a workaholic nation, Japanese cool has grown its popularity in Japan and other parts of the world. Around the world, contemporary Japanese popular culture spread through anime, manga, computer and video games, and their associated consumption items and merchandise, such as cute kawaii toys, J-pop music, Hello Kitty, and Pokémon. Many in younger generations grew up watching Japanese animes like Pokémon, Dragonball Z, One Piece, Sailor Moon, or Doraemon as well as playing these games. Also Kosupure (costume play or cosplay), dressing up as and representing Japanese anime or game characters, is a popular entertainment among the youth today. Consequently, this led to massive cultural consumptions of such Japanese cultural commodities across the world. The field trip is intended to introduce students to the world of Japanese cool, and ask how it shapes Japanese self-perceptions in everyday life. Objectives: 1) Discuss the concept of cool from a sociological perspective. 2) Think about how soft power is received in the originating and surrounding countries, possibly extending the discussion to US experience. The field class for this course is on Monday, 3 December in Kobe, Japan. Field class assignment is due in class on December 10. Field Class attendance is mandatory for all students enrolled in this course. Do not book any individual travel plans or a Semester at Sea sponsored trip on the day of your field class. Field Classes constitute at least 20% of the contact hours for each course, and are developed and led by the instructor. 7

8 Independent Field Assignments A number of days in the reading list include port-specific readings to enhance your experience of course material. In the event of a conflict in regard to this policy, individuals may appeal using established CSU procedures. LEARNING ACCOMMODATIONS Semester at Sea provides academic accommodations for students with diagnosed learning disabilities, in accordance with ADA guidelines. Students who will need accommodations in a class, should contact ISE to discuss their individual needs. Any accommodation must be discussed in a timely manner prior to implementation. Students must submit this verification of accommodations to 8

9 as soon as possible, but no later than two months prior to the voyage. STUDENT CONDUCT CODE The foundation of a university is truth and knowledge, each of which relies in a fundamental manner upon academic integrity and is diminished significantly by academic misconduct. Academic integrity is conceptualized as doing and taking credit for one s own work. A pervasive attitude promoting academic integrity enhances the sense of community and adds value to the educational process. All within the University are affected by the cooperative commitment to academic integrity. All Semester at Sea courses adhere to this Academic Integrity Policy and Student Conduct Code. Depending on the nature of the assignment or exam, the faculty member may require a written declaration of the following honor pledge: I have not given, received, or used any unauthorized assistance on this exam/assignment.
