1 BEFORE YOU READ: SONNETS 1, 35, AND 75 SONNETS 31 AND 39 Vocabulary Listen to each word. Say it. Then, read the definition and the example sentence. devise (di VYZ) v. When you devise something, you plan or invent a new way of doing it. Amanda had to devise a solution to a problem in science class. wan (WAHN) adj. A wan person looks pale, weak, or tired. Peter s bad flu left him looking wan. languished (LANG gwishd) v. To have languished is to have failed to improve and develop. Sean was smart, but he languished. Getting Ready to Read The poems you are about to read are sonnets. A sonnet is a poem of 14 lines written on a single subject. Although sonnets have been written on many different subjects, sonnets are often love poems. If you wrote a poem, what subject would you write about? Talk about it with a partner. Five Sonnets 59

2 MAKING CONNECTIONS Sonnets 1, 35, 75 Edmund Spenser Sonnets 31, 39 Sir Philip Sidney Summaries In Sonnet 1, Spenser asks his pages, lines, and rhymes to please his beloved. In Sonnet 35, he says that he cannot gaze upon his beloved without feeling the pain of hopeless desire. In Sonnet 75, he writes his beloved s name in the sand. However, the waves wash it away. In Sonnet 31, Sidney sees the pale moon. He asks if the moon is pale because, like him, it is unhappy in love. Sidney asks for the peace and healing of sleep in Sonnet 39. Asleep, he may dream of Stella, his beloved. Note-taking Guide One way an author tries to describe something for a reader is to compare it to something else. As you read these sonnets, explain the comparison that the poet is making in each of the listed phrases.
