Social Studies 7 th Grade Geography Will be provided the first day of school. Choose ONE of the following two nonfiction novels: I Am Malala (YOUNG READER S EDITION) Malala Yousafzai and Patricia McCormick The Young Readers Edition of the New York Times Bestseller The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (YOUNG READER S EDITION) William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer The Young Readers Edition of the New York Times Bestseller 7 th Grade Choice Reading Fiction Summer 2016: Choose ONE from the list below: OR Revolution is Not a Dinner Party Ying Chang Compestine Ling is a daughter of prominent doctors in China when The Cultural Revolution, under the direction of Chairman Mao, takes place and changes her world forever. This autobiographical novel is a poignant representation of what life became in China in 1972 as any form of western culture fell into disfavor. Learn how Ling and her family worked to overcome the repression that was part of the history of China in this time period. Peak Roland Smith When fourteen-year-old Peak Marcello s long-lost father presents the opportunity for them to summit Everest together, Peak doesn t even consider saying no even though he suspects there are a few strings attached. And if he makes it to the top before his birthday, he ll be the youngest person ever to stand above 29,000 feet. It s not a bad turn of events for a guy who s been stuck in New York City with only skyscrapers to (illegally) scale. Here, in Peak s own words, is the exhilarating, gut-wrenching story of what happened on that climb to the top of the world a climb that changed everything.
Social Studies The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm Nancy Farmer Zimbabwe, Africa in 2194 is the setting of this courageous tale of unexpected adventure. Tendia, Rita, and Kuda are the children of the country s Chief of Security. They have spent most of their lives behind the fortified walls of their home longing to know if there is more out there. With the help of the Mellower, they slip past the gates to enter a world more complex than any they could have expected. Detectives with enhanced abilities, hired to find the children and bring them home, encounter evil characters in this fascinating futuristic tale. The Indigo Laura Resau Zeeta and her free-spirit mother, Layla, live in a different country every year. Because Layla makes a living as an English teacher, Zeeta is forced into a wandering life style that causes her long for a normal life. However, when that begins to happen, Zeeta realizes that her reality may be better than the fantasy life she was seeking. Filled with adventure, romance, and elements of culture indigenous to Ecuador, this book is the first in a series about the travels of Zeeta and Layla. A Girl Named Disaster Nancy Farmer Nhamo is a Shona girl living in a traditional village in Mozambique, Africa. When her family arranges for her to marry a cruel man, she flees. She embarks on what was supposed to have been a short boat trip to the border of Zimbabwe, in search of her dad. This short trip turns into an adventure filled with challenges and danger that last for months. 8 th Grade U.S. History Will be provided the first day of school. Nothing but the Truth Avi ISBN: Students should read the book and come ready to discuss the major characters and themes within the book on the first day of school.
Social Studies 9 th Grade AP Geography* In preparation for this course over the summer students will: 1. Read two articles and write reflection paragraphs. 2. Prepare to take World Map Quiz- maps and on-line study tools provided 3. Read Chapter 1 of Cultural Landscapes provided in PDF format. 4. Complete Section 1 of Albert test-prep program World History I The Life of Pi Yann Martel ISBN:
Social Studies World History I (Honors) : Large 3-Ring Binder /Loose-leaf paper Pens (black/blue) Pencils Highlighters (Optional) 1. Wells, H.G. The Time Machine. New York: Oxford University Press, ISBN: N.B. This edition is preferable, but any edition will do. 2. Du Bois, William Pène. The Twenty-One Balloons. New York: Puffin Books, ISBN: The two texts will be read together. Both texts were written in the first blush of modern technologies where people were imagining what was possible/probable. So the ultimate/yearlong assignment is to connect the technologies and ensuing possibilities/probabilities in the created worlds to the actual world. Students will craft an essay, intended for publication in any popular magazine or newspaper. Students are simply to read over the summer. An immediate grade will be assessed on a student s ability to engage in in-class discussion vis-à-vis guided reading questions. The essay will be due within a week of classes resuming from summer break. o This will allow time to discuss the texts in class, and to clarify the actual writing assignment.
Social Studies 10 th Grade AP World History* Folder Pens (black/blue) Pencils Highlighters (Optional) 1) Listen to six (6) 15 Minute History podcasts from the University of Texas at Austin. An immediate assessment will be based on student notes. A more rigorous assessment will come within a week classes resuming by way of a Short-Answer Quiz. The quiz will come with a rubric, and will ask the student to provide an outline of their argument for each graded component. Below are links to the podcasts. Period 1 (to 600 BCE): Period 2 (600 BCE 600 CE): Period 3 (600 CE 1450): Period 4 ( ): Period 5 ( ): Period 6 (1900 Present):

Social Studies 11 th and 12 th Grade AP Course Offerings AP European History* Note-taking device Folder Pen A World Lit Only by Fire William Manchester This is an excellent introduction into the Renaissance and a review of Middle Age Europe. It focuses on the life of Martin Luther, Da Vinci, and Magellan and mixes in stories of the church, monarchies, and changing economic climate. It is written in a very conversational tone and contains challenging material suited for older students. We use this book as review and write two papers and establish the idea of the Renaissance Man The Guns of August Barbara Tuchman This is a classic text that uses incredible evidence to build an argument of how the Great War was a pre-destined disaster. Tuchman s book is very dry and informational, but it is engaging and leads the reader to find conclusions on their own instead of being told what to think. It is a masterclass in historical writing. We will use this text to prep for the Great War.
