rskills Test 7b, page 2 Comprehension Read the following technology text. Then answer questions 1 5. Things to Brag About Juan Arredondo finds some odd things to brag about like eating grapes, picking up a baseball, and holding a coffee cup. To most people, it would seem like Arredondo has better sources of pride: his family; his work with wounded veterans; his years in the Army, including service in Iraq; his rock-climbing and rifle-shooting skills. But most people have not had a hand blown off by an improvised explosive device (IED) that nearly killed them. For Arredondo, the fact that he has two hands with fingers that work is plenty to brag about. In 2005, Sergeant Arredondo was on patrol in Iraq when his vehicle struck an IED. Badly wounded, he was transported to a combat hospital, where doctors had to work hard to keep him alive. Though they were able to repair his damaged legs, nothing could be done to save his left hand. Arredondo was sent back to the United States to recover. While Arredondo was in the hospital, he became depressed and worried about how he was going to take care of his family. Then an organization called the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) stepped in to help him regain his confidence and connect with others in similar situations. The mission of the WWP is to help soldiers who are severely wounded reclaim their lives. The WWP encourages veterans to help themselves and each other. It offers them a range of programs, including outdoor adventures such as rock climbing and whitewater rafting. It works with Congress to provide them with better benefits. And it educates the public about the physical, mental, financial, and other challenges that veterans and their families face every day. After Sergeant Arredondo retired from the Army in early 2006, he started working for the

rskills Test 7b, page 3 Arredondo retired from the Army in early 2006, he started working for the Wounded Warrior Project. In 2007, Sergeant Arredondo became the first person to use a new kind of artificial hand called the i-limb. This amazing invention has a tiny motor inside each finger. The motors are triggered by signals from the muscles in his arm. By flexing his muscles in different ways, Arredondo can curve his hand around things to pick up a baseball, for example. He can also control how hard he grips something such as grapes or a paper cup. With previous artificial hands, he could only move his thumb and two fingers in a pinching motion. He also had an older hook-like device. The i-limb was not the only artificial hand that used signals from arm muscles, but its ability to control all five fingers separately was something new. Artificial limbs, called prostheses, have been around for a long time. An account from 484 BCE tells of a Persian soldier who made himself a new wooden foot. The oldest device ever found (a leg made of wood and copper) was dated from about 300 BCE. Most prostheses throughout history have helped a little, allowing a person to walk with a crutch, for example. Until recently, though, few of them could function anything like a real hand, foot, arm, or leg. Fortunately, medical technology is changing that. Researchers and manufacturers are constantly working to improve prosthetic devices. With the improved devices comes an improved quality of life for the people who use them. For example, the i-limb was altered to make it stronger so that young and healthy people like Juan Arredondo could engage in rough activities such as rock climbing. Also, greater precision of movement and grip allows the wearer to be gentle as well. For Arredondo, one of the biggest benefits was being able to pick up his children in a natural-feeling way. That gave him one more pretty amazing thing to brag about.

rskills Test 7b, page 4 1. How does the i-limb s design help Sergeant Arredondo do more things with his hands? The fingers are jointed to allow a greater range of movement. Stronger signals from the arm muscles provide a tighter grip. Each finger has a small motor that allows it to move separately. A separate hook-like device was added for grasping larger objects.

rskills Test 7b, page 5 2. What was Sergeant Arredondo s main problem when he was in the hospital? The artificial hand he was given did not work very well. Both of his legs were injured and could not be repaired. He was depressed and worried about his family. He was not getting very good benefits. 3. The Wounded Warriors Project was created to address which of the following problems? Badly wounded soldiers needed help to get on with their lives. Too many soldiers in Iraq were being injured by IEDs. Existing prosthetic devices needed to be improved. Soldiers did not have enough money to live on. 4. A prosthesis made around 484 BCE was made by a soldier. writer. doctor. carpenter. 5. According to the diagram of the i-limb Hand, what is located just above the wrist connector? knuckle thumb rotator motorized digit ON/OFF switch

rskills Test 7b, page 6 Read the following technology text. Then answer questions Flying Squirrels On September 24, 2010, Japanese wingsuit pilot Shin Ito leaped out of a plane at an altitude of more than 33,000 feet. He then flew through the air for a horizontal distance of almost 12 miles before pulling open his parachute to land in the suburbs of Davis, California. With that flight, Shin Ito set a world record in an extreme sport that most people have never even heard about. From the moment the first human jumped out of a plane, skydivers have been searching for ways to attain the feeeling of actual flight. The first attempts in the 1930s involved sets of wings made from all sorts of materials, including canvas and whalebone, silk and wood, even steel. Early Birdmen like Clem Sohn and Leo Valentin claimed to have glided for miles in these contraptions. But the sport wasn t very safe. Between 1930 and 1961, 72 of the original 75 Birdmen died in their quest for winged flight. Today s extreme skydivers, called wingsuit flyers, have much more advanced equipment to work with. New standards for both equipment and training have also made the sport much safer. Before being trained as a wingsuit flyer, a candidate must put in at least 200 hours of ordinary skydiving. What gives these flyers, who are sometimes called flying squirrels, their gliding ability (and their nickname) is the wingsuit. Made of sturdy nylon, the wingsuit forms a flexible web between the diver s arms, legs, and body, much like a flying squirrel, minus the tail. Using such a suit, a skydiver can float in the air for an extended time before beginning to descend to Earth in freefall. All wingsuit divers use parachutes to land safely. The suit is used to reduce the speed of the diver s fall from 120 to 140 miles per hour down to as little as 25 miles per hour.

rskills Test 7b, page 7 All skydivers must eventually fall back to land, but wingsuit flyers try to fall less quickly. Using a global positioning system (GPS) and other sensors attached to their suits, these daredevils monitor their performances to the second. They want to see just how long they can push their free time in the air and how much distance they can cover. Wingsuits are not the only option for gliding. Some divers prefer actual wings. These wingpacks, as they are called, are made from light, strong materials such as carbon fiber. A flyer using a wingpack can generally travel much farther than a flyer in a wingsuit. On July 31, 2003, Austrian Felix Baumgartner crossed the English Channel wearing a wingpack. Beginning his dive at 29,360 feet, he traveled more than 25 miles in about 14 minutes. Wingpacks with jets attached are another innovation. But in true winged flight, the diver must use only his or her body to steer. How much farther the flying squirrels of tomorrow will be able to glide remains unclear. New materials, new designs, and new fuels for jets will certainly open new frontiers. But what drives these skydivers will not change the human desire to fly like a bird. 6. In the 1930s, people tried to fly by watching flying squirrels. wearing homemade wings. jumping from cliffs. using GPS sensors.

rskills Test 7b, page 8 7. What did Felix Baumgartner achieve with a wingpack? He was the first to use jets. He crossed the English Channel. He flew over the Austrian alps. He set a world record for distance. 8. The wingsuit helps flyers glide for longer distances because it covers more distance than a wingpack. includes a parachute attachment. reduces the speed of their fall. uses GPS and other sensors. 9. Why are the chances of surviving a wingsuit flight much greater today than in the days of the Birdmen? Jets can now be attached to wingpacks. Wingsuits are now made with GPS sensors attached. Wingsuit pilot Shin Ito has set a world record. Both equipment and training have improved. 10. Which of these was a material used by early Birdmen to make their wings? silk ceramic paper plastic
