15 Session 2 Session 2: English/Language Arts 1 A Day of Perfect Weather Read the writing prompt below and complete the writing activity. Jump out of bed! Look out the window! It is a perfectweather day! Write a story about a day when the weather seemed perfect. Prewriting Activity Use the space on the next page to help you plan your story. Be sure your story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Be sure to include details in your story to make it interesting. Here are some questions to help you think about your story: What is the weather like? What will you do during the day? How does the day end? If you need more paper to plan your writing, ask your teacher. Page 15

23 Session 3 Clara and the Fox Family by Bonnie Bisbee Guess I ll plow that back section of the farm today, Dad said. We ve grown corn in the front section for two years now. The back twenty acres haven t been plowed for a long time. But Dad, exclaimed Clara, you can t! A family of foxes lives in the middle of that field. I ve seen the babies playing outside their den. Their mother and father rest beside them and watch. The foxes can find a new place to live, Clara, said Mom. The work on the farm must go on. Dad didn t say anything else. He never did say much. Telling them about his plans to plow the back twenty acres of their farm had just about used up all his talk. But halfway out the back door he added, Guess I ll get to work now. Clara and her brother Jim cleared the table and did the dishes. Mom got ready to go to town. It was Saturday. Jim decided to go with Mom. But for once Clara didn t feel like going to town. She went outside and whistled for Laddie, one of the farm s collies. They headed for the woods, keeping well away from the back twenty. Usually Clara loved the way the woods smelled. It was a musty, exciting smell. Many times she tagged along as Laddie went on a sniffing expedition. She knew he could smell dozens of little smells where her nose caught only one. Clara wished she had a nose like Laddie s. Today she walked without really smelling or seeing anything. Soon they came upon a mother deer and her beautiful spotted Page 23

24 Session 3 fawn. But Clara hardly noticed. The deer and fawn gazed at her and Laddie for a full thirty seconds before bounding away. The foxes were all that Clara could think of. They lived near some rocks in the middle of the big green field, the back twenty acres that Dad was plowing. She kept remembering the round, furry forms of the baby foxes. She kept thinking of the way they came tumbling and rolling out of their den. How frightened the fox family would be today! They would be terrified by the growl of the tractor coming closer and closer. Would they have sense enough to run away to the woods? What if they hid in their den and the tractor pushed dirt over the entrance? They might be buried alive! Hearing the distant sound of her father s tractor didn t help Clara s mood. Oh, Laddie, she cried. She buried her face in the collie s soft fur. All day Clara wandered in the woods. When she came home for dinner, her family was already at the table. Clara sat down with her eyes red from crying. She didn t eat much and she didn t say a word. After supper Dad stood up. Clara, he said, come outside. I have something to show you. Clara got up and followed her father. But she still had nothing to say. What was there to talk about when the foxes home had been ruined? Clara walked along behind her father. She didn t even notice where they were going. She didn t even notice the beautiful golden light of the spring evening. Finally Dad stopped. Look, he said. Clara looked around. There was the back twenty. And it looked just as she knew it would brown rows of freshly plowed earth. But wait a minute! A beautiful green island had been left in the very middle of the big field. Page 24

25 Oh, Dad! she exclaimed. You saved the foxes home. As she watched, several plump, red fox-pup shapes tumbled out of their den. In the last rosy light of day the young foxes began to play. Then two larger and more graceful red forms came out of the den. It was the parent foxes, quietly watching over their young. Thanks, Dad, said Clara softly, holding her father s hand. Session 3 Had to plow around the rocks anyway, said Dad smiling. Besides, now the foxes are working for me. They ll help keep the mice out of the cornfield. Clara giggled and hugged her dad. And he hugged Clara right back. Page 25

28 Session 3 4 Read this story. Then complete the writing activity that follows. A Special Gift Mark s party was the best one he ever had! For once, all of his friends could come. His grandmother had really worked hard on the decorations. The best part of the whole day, though, was when his grandmother gave him his present. As he reached inside the heavy box, he heard a squeak. He pulled his hands back. What was in there? He reached in again and felt something warm and soft. A puppy! He had been asking for a puppy for months. He couldn t believe his grandmother had given him a new best friend. Pretend that you have received a special gift. Write a description of the gift and tell who gave it to you. Be sure to include details to support your writing. Page 28
