1 Summary Middle Georgia CPCU Society Chapter, Inc., Macon, GA The Middle Georgia CPCU Society Chapter held an Ethics Awareness Month activity on March 17, at our monthly lunch meeting. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Star Trek series on TV, our activity had a Star Trek theme. We called the session Ethics Trek and had four members of the crew of the Starship Ethicsprise run the meeting. The crew members were Captain Quirk, Lieutenant. Ouwoohoo, Mr. Smock, and Dr. Bonecrusher. They wore the appropriate Star Trek uniform shirts and insignias of rank. The first thing the crew did after beaming down was to make all members of the audience honorary crew members of the Starship Ethicsprise. Lieutenant. Ouwoohoo informed Captain Quirk that a communication was coming in, and the Captain ordered her to put it up on visual (the PowerPoint screen). The communication included ethics cases from the Society s ethics page, modified slightly to fit the Star Trek theme. The crew then made some appropriate, and sometimes inane, comments. For example, about one case, Mr. Smock offered, Captain that is neither logical nor ethical. In response, Captain Quirk then got other crew members (the audience) involved in the ethics of the case. We presented three such cases for discussion. (See PowerPoint slides, included) There were 20 CPCUs and one guest in attendance, and all agreed this was a fun and lively activity that generated a lot of ethics-oriented discussion and awareness, as well as some laughs. 3 Case Studies Saad was Bernie s supervisor at Federation HQ until about 5 years ago. Saad knew Bernie enjoyed going to the track and casinos and began to be concerned that Bernie s gambling was becoming excessive. Knowing that his performance was suffering because of frequent absenses to go on gambling trips, Bernie got out of Federation HQ before he was disciplined. He and Saad remained friends. Both Bernie and Saad have taken other jobs and Bernie is out interviewing again this time for a job at a space station. Saad s neighbor is the interviewing officer at the space station and he asks Saad off the record if he would recommend Bernie for the position. Saad is concerned when he learns the position has some financial and budgetary responsibilities for he knows that Bernie continues to gamble and sometimes gets in over his head. Does Saad face an ethical dilemma? What should he do? You are an engineer at an anti matter power supplier and have a great relationship with one of the starfleet commanders. You get together once or twice a year and always have a great lunch. During your last lunch, you mention to the commander that you and your wife are planning a special vacation. The commander offers you a week at a condo at Star World. Starfleet allows their better vendors to use it as a tax deduction for Starfleet. You can use it if the dates are open. It s a two bedroom condo on the boardwalk with available discount tickets to Star World. You have never given the commander any special treatment but you always call him and give him a quote because you know Starfleet always deals with quality vendors. Visions of a really great vacation with your wife pop into your head the rest of the day and you go home that night and talk with your wife. Both of you are excited about finding a date when the condo will be available. You call the commander the next day and share the dates that are good for you. You get the third week in March. Ethical issues? Are they real? How do you deal with them? You and your best friends, Chris and Joanna, work at Starfleet. They ask you to cover for them while they sneak out of work early to go shopping. They are invited to a going away party at the Astro Club and they need to buy a gift. You nod and smile as they leave the office. A few minutes later your boss is looking for Chris and Joanna and asks if you kow where they are. Ther is an important strategy meeting coming up about a strategy and some new intelligence concerning the Klingons and he needs some of the information and research they have been working on.
