Hyper-Kamiokande
Hyper-Kamiokande in 2001 In 2001, Letter of Intent for T2K. arxiv:hep-ex/ Hyper-Kamiokande introduced as the second phase of T2K. Second phase can happen if T2K has observed muon-into-electron neutrino oscillations. Oscillation is a necessary step forward to measure leptonic CP violation: a main open question in particle physics; needed to understand matterantimatter asymmetry in the Universe. 2
Indication of e appearance at T2K 6 e events In 2011 the first indication of oscillation of muon-into-electron neutrinos at T2K. Published in Phys.Rev.Lett. 107 (2011) Almost 1000 citations! T2K continued to accumulate statistics. 3
Observation of e appearance at T2K Phys.Rev.Lett. 107 (2011) Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, (2014) 6 e events 28 e events 2 years later and more statistics In 2013, clear observation of muon-into-electron neutrinos oscillation. Condition needed to search for CP violation satisfied! 4
Letter of Intent to J-PARC Letter of Intent in 2011 (arxiv: [hep-ex]) Letter of Intent to J-PARC (April 2014): signatures from 3 Continents, 67 Institutes, 240 people. Using the J-PARC beam, Hyper-K has the potential to become the most sensitive experiment to probe CP violation. 5
Open Meetings International Open Meetings since Two per year, everyone is welcome. Discussions on all the aspects of the experiment ranging from the J-PARC beam to the detector. Vancouver, Canada, July 2014: Most recent at IPMU, Jan , and establishment of proto-collaboration. 6
EU Open Meetings EU Open Meetings from London, Dec 2013: Focus on EU contributions. June 2014, meeting at CERN, follow-up in Sept Collaboration with CERN through the CERN neutrino platform. 7
Worldwide Expertise The expected physics from Hyper-K is so remarkable that it is attracting Collaborators from many Countries: - who have made significant contributions to past and present experiments - including K2K, T2K and Super-K, but also other experiments worldwide, e.g. in the US and Europe. 8
Moving Foward Keep momentum going for a timely start of the experiment. Aim to start construction around June 2014 Prototype Approved R&D Funds MEXT R&D funds approved in Japan as Grant-in-Aid: ~ USD 1.7M/5 years ( ) 9
International Proto-Collaboration 240 people and growing! R&D funding already secured in some Countries. More are in the process of securing funds. Also EU Community awarded funds to EU Countries. 12 countries, 67 institutes, 240 people 13 10
Hyper-K Governance Structure The new formed proto-collaboration has an international governance structure. It is a self-organized entity bringing expertise from around the world. It is responsible for the scientific strategy and technical requirements. It collaborates with the host labs, responsible for the facilities, to work together toward the creation of the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. There are three bodies: International Board Representative (IBR) Conveners Board (CB) (International) Steering Committee (isc) 11
International Board Representative Charge Make the rules for the collaboration. Promote the funding requests in each Country. Monitor the financial aspects of the experiment. Confirm proposals from isc about project steering (such as nomination of conveners). Membership One or two members from each Country. The chair will be selected from amongst the IBR members. Ex-officio: isc members. 12
Memberships of the IBR Chair: D. Wark Brazil: H. Nunokawa (Rio de Janeiro) Canada: S. Bhadra (York), A. Konaka (TRIUMF) France: M. Gonin (Ecole Polytechnique) Italy: M.G. Catanesi (INFN-Bari) Japan: T. Kobayashi (KEK), T. Nakaya (Kyoto), M. Shiozawa (ICRR) Korea: K.K. Joo (CNU) Poland: E. Rondio (NCBJ, Warsaw) Russia: Y. Kudenko (INR) Spain: L. Labarga (Madrid) Switzerland: A. Blondel (Geneva) UK: F. Di Lodovico (QM London), D. Wark (STFC, RAL-PPD) USA: E. Kearns (Boston), C. Walter (Duke) 13
Conveners Board Charge Provide coordination of all the hardware, software and physics activities towards the full design of the experiment. Technical decisions of each R&D subjects confirmed by isc. Membership Project leader. Co-Project leader(s). Working group conveners. 14
International Working Groups Very active and growing group! Recently added new conveners. Project Leader: Masato Shiozawa Project co-leader: Francesca Di Lodovico WG1 Shiozawa WG2 Smy Sekiya H.Tanaka Vagins WG3 Nakayama Nishimura WG1: Cavity and Tank WG2: Water WG3: Photo-sensors WG4: Electronics and DAQ WG5: Software WG6: Calibration WG7: Near Detectors WG8: Beam & Accelerator WG6 WG4 WG5 Koshio WG7 WG8 Hayato Miura McCauley Phys-WG Hartz Hartz Lindner Walter Mine Yokoyama Wilson Fuji Di Lodovico Hide Tanaka Hiro Tanaka Phys-WG1 Yokoyama Phys-WG2 Wendell Phys-WG3 Shimizu Takeuchi Phys-WG1: Accelerator Phys-WG2: Atmospheric ν+nucleon decays Phys-WG3: Astroparticle Physics (SN, 15 Solar ν, etc)
(International) Steering Committee Charge Making or approving major scientific or technical decisions. It possesses sufficient expertise to guide the collaboration. Appoints members in conveners board including project leaders in consultation with IBR. Promotes the Hyper-K project in Japan and in the world. Select the Hyper-K speakers for international conferences. Check Hyper-K material (proceedings, etc.). 16
(International) Steering Committee Membership Chair: T. Nakaya IBR chair (co-chair of the isc): D. Wark (UK) ICRR representative: N. Nakahata (Japan) KEK representative: T. Kobayashi (Japan) Project leader and co-leader: M. Shiozawa (Japan), F. Di Lodovico (UK) Physics convener: M. Yokoyama (Japan) At-large members: H. Aihara (Japan), A. Blondel (Switzerland), G. Catanesi (Italy), E. Kearns (USA), J.M.Poutissou (Canada) 17
Next step: a Design Report Making a optimum conceptual design for the experiment is crucial. It's the needed step toward a concrete design of the experiment. Plan to submit a Design Report to KEK/JPARC in October
Worldwide R&D A snapshop of the R&D that is going on around the world. CERN Neutrino platform 19
Summary Hyper-K is very well placed to be the greatest experiment of its generation. It's based on exceptional experiments: SuperKamiokande, K2K and T2K. It attracted many collaborators worldwide. Proto-collaboration formed today. It is our strong goal to start construction as soon as possible and we look forward to working with our Japanese colleagues and Institutions to make Hyper-Kamiokande a reality. 20
