1 I. Victorian Literature The texts on this list are a comprehensive selection of Victorian literature and criticism with a focus on the novel. In addition to the novel, I have included poetry, non-fiction, and modern Victorian criticism and theory. While the list underscores the importance of the novel as both a major form of Victorian text and as an object, the other sections of the list claim no less importance on the period as a whole. The poetry and contemporary non-fiction texts represent key areas of discussion in the period that inform and flesh out many contexts and scenarios found within the novel. This is not to say that poetry and non-fiction fail at standing alone in providing sufficient readings of Victorian topics and debates just that this work, in this project, will be done by the novel rather than any other form of writing. The latter will be used to inform analyses on a range of contemporary social issues that more or less defined the Victorian period and thus were ultimately refracted through other kinds of writing. An obvious example is Darwin s On the Origin of Species (1859) which was and is a source of great controversy and possibly the most well known non-fiction work of the Victorian period. Others, however, such as the writings of Thomas Carlyle and George Eliot on the state of various aspects of Victorian life and writing are less specifically known to a generalist audience, though no less telling of important debates in the period. For example, the progress of technology and women s place in literature are topics covered in non-fiction essays and articles that certainly impacted other writing of the period. In compiling this list my aim was to strike a balance between selections that were representative of the period as a whole, for instance many popular three volume novels, while keeping in mind the significance of the works in connection with my own interests.
