2 1 Clone Wars 3h to Zero Hour RAS Infiltrator hyperspace Three full armed Republic Commandos were sitting in their squad quarter and checking their gear for the next mission. They hadn t individual paintings on their Katarn armors yet that was still a privilege of Delta Squad, but each commando had modified his armor with some extra stuff. RC-1776 Tracyn, the Sergeant and demolitions expert of Havoc Squad was just filling the tank of his built-in flamethrower when RC-2398 Nate, the squad s tactician entered the room. Any news bout our operation? Tracyn asked. Yes, Boss. Nate replied. After all, we won t fight on battlefield as we had suspected. But that maybe would ve been better when you regard our current mission. But we have no choice. Hey, Nate, what s going on with you? Cyph, the techniques expert of the squad, wanted to know. Have you become weak in recent time? Maybe you should better stop studying Mandalorian military-history and come back to real life. We are bred to handle every operation, how hard or dangerous it so ever may be. We should better leave this front-line target-practice to usual infantry and ARC-Troopers. Er - Actually, I m totally your opinion, but one of these damned ARCs accompanies us on this mission. What? Cyph rose rapidly from his rack. You re joking, aren t you? As long as I know Nate, Ceptor, the squad s sniper, added, he doesn t even know what a joke is. Seems like the cloners forgot to add a humor-gene to his DNA. Damnit, Cep. You re taking the words out of my mouth. That s exactly what I just wanted to say! Cyph answered. Could you two guys please shut up, Tracyn interrupted them, and let Nate finish? Yes, sir! they both answered. Er, Sarge, I actually don t really know more about the ARC s role in our op, but Nate started. Havoc Squad, a voice came out of the comlink near the door, this is your advisor. Maybe Nine-Eight forgot to tell you, that the briefing is about to begin in 3 minutes. We haven t got much time, so hurry up, squad! Clone Advisor 1 out. Nate didn t you forget to tell us something? Ceptor asked. Yes, Cep. I was just about to say Now we know what was so urgent so that you told us immediately. A little tip from myself: maybe you should be a bit faster next time, Cyph said. Delay your discussion on later, squad. The briefing room awaits us and we don t want to be late, understood? Tracyn said. Sir, ya sir! they answered. 2

3 Let s go then! The ARC-trooper A-13 wasn t very pleased about the mission with the commandos. He preferred operations, where he was on his own and the mission-success was only dependent on him. So he relied on others, who were very different from ARCs. A-13 wouldn t argue one of his kind with him but he couldn t abide those Republic Commandos. One clone-trooper in his white armor is already flashy, but five But he couldn t choose, just as they couldn t, too. A-13 looked up to the silent clone advisor in front of him, who was configuring the holo-projector. The advisor actually had a lower rank than the ARC-trooper, but that didn t matter. The elite-clonetrooper knew that the clone had only to introduce the briefing their real instructor, a Jedi-General, came later. A-13 was already well-informed about the mission but, nevertheless, he had to accompany the others. Suddenly the door silently slid open, and four completely armored Republic Commandos entered the room. They sat down right to A-13 without any comment and waited that the advisor began. 2 How you certainly know, the advisor started, will we fall out of hyperspace in orbit of Geonosis in about one hour and 25 minutes. As soon as we arrive, you will at once fly with a gunship to planet s surface and land there. Your primary objective is a secret CIS underground base, where their General works out battle plans. We don t know much about him, unless he is a ruthless commander who leads his troops in front line. It s very important you get him before he reaches the battlefield, what could maybe lead to our defeat in the incoming battle. We don t have any more information but his current position. General Nemec, who should arrive soon, will be able to tell you more. Good luck on your first mission, Squad. He left for good and let the other five clones under their own. What the hell is so difficult bout this?, Cyph asked. In, eliminate the enemy General and out again. I think Nate overacted a bit. There is something you don t know yet. the ARC-trooper said. But we should leave the declaration to General Nemec. Tracyn watched the ARC astonished. How does this trooper know that? Was he cleared up about the mission earlier? As if Ceptor could read his Sarge s mind, he asked the blue-painted clonetrooper: 3

4 Where did you get this information? From me, a dark voice with a strong accent came from behind them. A-13 here was told about your operation earlier to help us to improve it. Tracyn turned around and saw a tall and sturdy green-skinned Twi lek who had put his Lekku around his neck like a scarf. The General appeared to have entered silently and waited for a moment to show himself. So finally we know the name of our formerly unknown companion: A-13. An interesting number The Jedi went to the holo-projector and insistently looked at each clone. You all obviously astonish why this easy mission shall be so hard, General Nemec said. Your clone advisor couldn t give you more information because he himself hadn t any more. But I do so because your operation was planned by Jedi. The CIS- General is half alien, half droid and is called Grievous. He is a nearly invincible Jedihunter who already has killed lots of Jedi-Knights and collected their lighsabers. He rested to let the Commandos understand the full scale of this news. Now Tracyn could understand Nate much better than before. What shall we act out against this Grievous if even Jedi fall prey to him? To be frank to you, you won t even stand a chance against the General, Nemec went on. You can say that again! But you shall not kill him but only bar him from reaching the battlefield, just as your advisor has told you. And how shall we handle that? Blowing the base up will hardly make sense cause he ll probably die that way, Nate noticed. You should be the tactician here, ain t you? So you should just be the one knowing what s wise. There s only one way into the base but two out. If you block both, the General will be stuck. Blowing up the entrance will be quite easy, thus A-13 will take over that part. The Advanced Recon Commando nodded consenting. The rather hard thing will be your squads job. I don t see anything hard in detonating the second exit. I guess Seven-Six will do this blindfold, Cyph said. Even if I just said something about Grievous being stuck it s not your objective. Grievous may namely not get a chance to lead his troops in battle himself but he also shall not be captured in his own base. For him it has to seem like hap, like an earthquake. He must not find out your presence there, so stay as undetected as possible. The base crawls with Geonosians and droids and it s not going to be easy for you. How you handle this is your concern, but as soon as you are discovered you re as good as dead. You re the first Republic forces on the planet; the rest of the fleet arrives about one hour later. So you ve a solid hour time to fulfill your objectives. The General shut down the holo-projector and turned towards the door. One more thing: it s most likely you ve to fight against Grievous guards always provided that you ve come so far. This mission is your first, but we count on you, Havoc Squad. May the Force be with you. He disappeared through the door what shut silently behind him. 4

5 3 1,3h to Zero Hour Geonosis The gunship broke through the atmosphere with a slight shake. On board were six clonetroopers, four of them commandos, one Advanced Recon Commando and the pilot of the gunship. They were the first Republic forces on Geonosis apart from the Jedi who had arrived a bit earlier and had to pay attention not to be discovered. The aircraft was equipped with jamming devices that averted any locating from ground or air based radars. The pilot flew with high-speed to circa five meters above the surface and opened but now the airlocks that flooded the cabin with air. So near to the ground any possibility for positioning was scotched what ensured the guarantee of the mission additionally. Nate hoped they would arrive soon. After a short conversation with the Havocs about their mission they realized that they really had to rack to have success. Nate had never been the squad s optimist and had had the bad feeling that the first mission of his squad would also be their last. This operation is just at the outset foredoomed. If there is the Force, it should be better on this dry rock than anywhere else Nate said. See it positive, Nate, Cyph tried to encourage him. We re the first squad that has a mission yet. When the others come, we re longest away and can relax on board of the Infiltrator. Even if we only get ourselves out of this scummy hole, we will be obviously become very famous. Even the so great Deltas wouldn t have much chance of success on this operation. Nate thought about his brothers words. Even if he knew they were only there to hearten him, there was some truth in them. Cyph is slightly right, but he doesn t know these dammed MagnaGuards. They even kill Jedi! Even if we survive so far we still have to get passed some of those, and that s gonna be harder than the other parts of this mission. Nate let his thoughts well knowing unspoken. He didn t want to start another discussion so short before the operation. All his concentration was on the forthcoming mission and he went through the tactics that his studies in Mandalorian military history had burnt in his mind. Tracyn couldn t appreciate Nate. Basically the mission was easier than they thought. The Geonosians had no comlinks or other communications devices to communicate on long ranges, and so they couldn t sound the alarm. We only need to shoot these bugs fast enough and prevent them from scramming, but Cep will handle that. Concerning the droids, they hadn t to worry about. Cyph had a special visor-mode what let him see electro-magnetic signals even through thickest walls. We can dodge these flivvers 5

6 smoothly without running the risk of being discovered. It seems we are perfectly equipped for this mission though we haven t known anything about it before. Maybe that s the reason why just we were sent on that mission, who knows? Tracyn looked around. Apart from the shooting sandy terrain of Geonosis he could hardly catch something outside the gunship. Ceptor was just checking his DC-13s High Precision Sniper Rifle one more time and Cyph prepared something on his backpack. The ARC was calmly sitting there and waited the mission to begin. Let s see how they manage their first real operation. We re approaching target, the pilot s voice came out of Tracyn s built-in comlink. Prepare to jump off. If you cope with it, we will be seeing around in about one hour. Good luck, guys We ll need it A-13 already got up from his seat and prepared for the drop. One last condition before it goes off, Cyph suddenly said. What does he want yet? Every one of us has a nickname and it s easier for us to address us with directly than with those strange designations. When we ve to work with you, you need one, too. And you certainly have none, have you? Er - no, that s nothing for ARCs A-13 really didn t know what that all was. What are names good for? That s totally commando-nuisance The ARC-Trooper didn t know it yet, but in soon future, every elite-clone, regardless if Commando, ARC or anyone else, would get a nick apart from his designation, what intensely increased the morality. So we give you a name. What about Cal? How does he descend on that? It s not from calamity because of my unlucky number, is it? Won t get more imappropriate I don t mind how you call me. Call me Cal if you want. But now we should get back to important topics The gunship slowed down, closer to the ground and stopped completely. I m just your opinion, Cal. Let s go, Havoc Squad! Tracyn said and jumped on the sandy ground. Behind him four more clones landed. 6
