She wears many different colored wigs and helps Katniss and Peeta get sponsors in the Games. She constantly bickers and argues with Haymitch. Very proper, she hates it when people do not have proper etiquette. He is drunk at almost any given time, with a glass in one hand and a knife in the other. He drinks to forget the memories of the 50th Hunger Games, which he was crowned victor of. He won during the second Quarter Quell, when double the tributes were required to participate in this deadly game. He promised he would sober up long enough for Katniss and Peeta to play the Games and help them. He sends Katniss gifts throughout the games to help her survive, and sometimes Katniss believes that his gifts always seem to have good timing and there might be some kind of connection between them. Gale Hawthorne â The best friend of Katniss. She and Gale met when she was only twelve and he was fourteen. Both of their fathers died in the same mining explosion. Gale hunts with Katniss in the forest usually everyday, but in Catching Fire he only hunts with her on Sundays before the hour electric fence is put up because he started work in the mines. Gale calls Katniss "Catnip," a nickname that was created after the pair first met. Katniss barely whispered her name when he asked her what she was called and Gale thought she said Catnip. Even though Katniss told him her real name later, he still calls her that. Primrose Everdeen â The younger sister and only sibling of Katniss Everdeen. She was originally chosen as the female tribute for the 74th Hunger Games, but Katniss volunteered to take her place. She owns a goat named Lady, and a cat Page 1

2 named Buttercup. Unlike her older sister, Prim has a heart full of compassion and she is a talented healer. She was named after the Evening Primrose, as mentioned in Mockingjay. Madge Undersee â She gave Katniss the Mockingjay pin so she could wear it as her district token although in the movie, Katniss receives the pin from Greasy Sae. In Mockingjay, Madge and her family died from the fire bombing that destroyed District Catching Fire Katniss Everdeen â Returns as the narrator and the main character for the second installment, facing new challenges. She is forced to show that she is in love with Peeta, and her desperate action at the end of the first Games was an act of mindless love. But when she is forced to compete in the 75th Hunger Games, Cinna dresses her in her wedding dress for her interview, but because of his alterations, it burned and turned her into a human mockingjay. Katniss describes him as having a smell of blood and roses in his breath. Finnick Odair â The male tribute from District 4. Finnick is described as being one of the most stunning, sensuous people on the planet. He is known for his attractive sea green eyes and bronze hair. During the Quarter Quell, a jabberjay recording of his one true love, Annie Cresta, screaming is used as psychological torture. Katniss was hesitant to make Finnick her ally, but he proved to be valuable when he helped Peeta off his plate and then administered CPR after he hit the force field. Finnick was a key person in the rebellion, as revealed to Katniss in the hovercraft at the end of the book. Mags â The female tribute from District 4. Katniss and Peeta tour the districts as victors and plan a public wedding. District by district, the citizens of Panem begin to stage uprisings against the Capitol. Snow announces a special 75th edition of the Hunger Gamesâ known as the Quarter Quell â in which Katniss and Peeta are forced to compete with other past victors, effectively canceling the wedding. Katniss is rescued by the rebel forces from District 13, and Gale informs her that the Capitol has destroyed District 12, and captured both Peeta and their District 7 ally, Johanna Mason. The Capitol lied about the district being destroyed in the Dark Days. After a Mexican standoff with the Capitol, the District 13 residents took to living underground and rebuilding their strength. The District 12 survivors find shelter with them. Katniss, after seeing first-hand the destruction wrought on her district, agrees to become the "Mockingjay", the symbol of the rebellion. She sets conditions, however. Katniss also demands the privilege of killing Snow, but Coin only agrees to flip for the honor. For her sake, a rescue mission is mounted that succeeds in rescuing Peeta, Johanna and Annie. However, Peeta has been brainwashed to kill Katniss, and he tries to choke her to death upon their reunion. He undergoes experimental treatment to try to cure him. After she recovers, Katniss and a team known as the Star Squad, composed of Gale, Peeta, Finnick, a camera crew, and various other soldiers, are assigned to film propaganda in relatively quiet combat zones. Katniss, however, decides to go to the Capitol to kill Snow, pretending that Coin gave her that mission. Most of the squad are killed along the way, including recently married Finnick. Suddenly a hovercraft drops silver parachutes on the children, who reach for them, hoping they bear food. Some of the parachutes explode, creating carnage. The advancing rebels send in medics, including Prim. Then the rest of the parachutes blow up, killing Prim, just as she spots her sister. Later, Katniss, also injured, awakens from a coma to learn that the rebels have won, and Snow is awaiting execution at her hands. When she meets Snow by chance, he claims that it was Coin who secretly ordered the bombings in order to strip away the support of his remaining followers. Katniss and Haymitch cast the deciding votes in favor of the scheme. Snow laughs, then dies. Katniss is tried, but the jury believes she was mentally unfit, and she is sent home to District Peeta regains his sanity. Katniss settles down with him, and after many years of persuasion by him, she finally agrees to have children. They have a girl and then a boy. 5 Chapter 3 : The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset by Suzanne Collins Suzanne Collins is the author of the groundbreaking Hunger Games trilogy for young adults: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. I did a review on that for my work newsletter which made me think about it for a good long while. The first book, Hunger Games, is awesome. Engaging characters, tight in both senses of the word narrative, a plot that, while being far from original, seems shiny and new for all the different spins Suzanne Collins puts on it. It draws out your emotions and engages them, keeps you on the edge of your seat. I sure wish the story had. At least Hunger Games stands on its own, and after reading the other two in the trilogy, I know that I can go back and just reread the first one and never have to touch the other two to have a complete fulfilling story. Catching Fire is actually pretty good. Not up to the same standards as the first book - it does feel like exactly what it is, the middle book in a trilogy - but not a bad read at all. But at the same time, it is kind of a rehash of the first book, which is what makes it less engaging. To know the whole story you have to read the third book, Mockingjay. The book that had all the potential to be a wonderful, heart-racing, utterly amazing finale to the trilogy. So much potential; so much fail. The ideas were there, but the execution was I keep asking myself, did the author have a word limit she had to adhere to? Was she over her deadline by too much and had to rush? Going against one of the major rules of good writing, Mockingjay is an exercise in telling instead of showing. With very few exceptions, events happen off screen and we get an info dump explaining them. That alone was just terrible to read. She just lets herself be used, over and over, turns into something akin to a leaf in the wind. The introduction of new characters should help things, but the narrative fails there too. The combination of all that leaves us with a flat, lifeless book and what amounts to a boring read. You want to get excited, I mean, there are serious, emotional things going on! The originality, excitement and all the drive behind the first two books is just gone. I still encourage people to pick up The Hunger Games, but I barely give the next two in the trilogy more than a cursory mention. I reserve all my glowing praise for the first book and try to pretend the third never happened. Page 5
