Contact: Ann Robertson (ann@robertsonwriting.com) The Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins have sold millions of copies to devoted fans. Readers are drawn in to the story of Katniss Everdeen, whose brave acts of self- sacrifice inspire ordinary citizens to take a stand against violence and cruelty. To earn the Small Change patch you must complete the required activity as well as at least one activity in each of the five numbered sections. You do not have to complete the Odds Are or Rising Tide patches before working on Small Change. Required Read at least one of the three novels in the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins or view one of the movies inspired by the books. Agree not to reveal any spoilers in any of the books that your troop- mates have not also read. The Hunger Games take place in the future, in the fictional country of Panem, which is located in roughly the same place as the continental United States. Each Hunger Games competition begins with a history lesson that explains how an earlier civilization, North America, was destroyed by disasters and war. In time, Panem emerged from the ruins of North America, consisting of a Capitol and 13 Districts. When the districts attempted to overthrow the Capitol, the rebellion was brutally put down. The resulting Treaty of Treason created the Hunger Games as a way to instill fear and obedience in the Districts so they will never rebel again. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are chosen to represent District 12 in the 74 th Hunger Games. When they realize they are the only Tributes left alive near the end of the competition, they threaten to commit suicide rather than kill each other. That act of rebellion inspires other Districts to rise up against the Capitol.

2 2 Katniss may only be seventeen, but Panem looks to her for inspiration and guidance. What about Katniss makes her a good leader? How does she react to having this unexpected responsibility? Has her reaction changed by the third book of the series? After so much sacrifice, how much has changed in Panem? Discuss with your troop. 1. District 12 The book Mockingjay opens with Katniss visiting the remains of her childhood home. Following the disastrous Quarter Quell edition of the Hunger Games chronicled in Catching Fire, President Snow ordered the complete destruction of District 12 except for the gleaming houses in the Victor s Village. Katniss finds all other homes, shops, and buildings reduced to ash and the charred, rotting remains of her fellow residents. With your troop, hold your own Campfire Ashes Ceremony, following a tradition begun by Lord Baden- Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts. Gale Hawthorne saved about 800 residents of District 12 by tearing down the chain- link fence and leading people into the Meadow, away from the burning buildings. With your family, create an emergency escape plan for your house or apartment. Agree on a place for everyone one meet. Practice your plan. The survivors of District 12 have no time to collect their valuables or supplies. With your family, create an emergency go bag with the basics you would need in an emergency. Think about food, water, medications, clothing, phone numbers, and pet supplies. The American Red Cross and Federal Emergency Management Agency have suggestions about what to pack. 2. District 13 Katniss, Gale, and the other refugees from District 12 are rescued by a rebel hovercraft and taken to District 13. In the official history of Panem, District 13 had also been destroyed by the Capitol s bombs, but in reality a group survived and took shelter underground. Over the decades they built a highly regulated, self- sufficient community below the surface. District 13 welcomes the refugees and provides them with the essentials needed to rebuild their lives. Learn about organizations that provide relief in emergencies. Interview a representative of your local American Red Cross about the services they offer to families and communities in crisis. What training is required for Red Cross professional staff? For Red Cross volunteers?

3 3 The United Nations provides emergency relief services to people displaced by war, disease, and natural disaster. Find out more about UN agencies such as the Central Emergency Response Fund, the World Health Organization, the World Food Program, the United Nation s Children s Fund, and the High Commissioner for Refugees. With your troop, create a public information announcement (similar to a propaganda message or propo ) about UN relief operations in a recent humanitarian crisis or about the International Day for Disaster Reduction. Carry out a supplies drive for a local organization, such as a food pantry or homeless shelter. 3. Below the Surface, In the Air Much of Mockinjay takes place underground; nearly all facilities in District 13 were built below the surface, and the Star Squad infiltrates the Capitol through the subterranean Transfer corridors. Take a trip below ground yourself with a caving expedition. Visit either a commercial cave or explore a wild cave with an experienced guide. Both Katniss and Gale are expert shots with the bow and arrow. Throughout the Hunger Games trilogy, both use their skills to provide food and defeat the enemy. Locate an archery range near you and take a lesson. When Cressida s team goes to District 8 to film a propo, they come under fire from Capitol aircraft. Katniss quickly scrambles up an access ladder to the roof, commenting that climbing is one of the things she does best. Test your climbing skills at a challenge course, climbing and rappelling, or another high- adventure activity. 4. Mental Health After surviving two Hunger Games competitions, the destruction of their home districts, and the beginning of a civil war, the characters in Mockingjay are suffering from some major mental health issues. In addition, while the movies were still in production, the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman (Plutarch Heavensbee) died of a heroin overdose. Ask a trained mental health professional to explain the symptoms and treatment options for depression, post- traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Are these rare conditions or ones that affect a large segment of the population?

4 4 Katniss suffered a concussion as she was rescued from the arena at the end of the Quarter Quell. She still is experiencing headaches and other symptoms throughout Mockingjay. Learn more about the symptoms of concussions, their potential for long- term damage, and how to prevent them. Does your school have a concussion awareness program for student athletes? If not, make posters to hang in the school locker rooms to educate students about the risks. Alternatively, create a public information announcement (similar to a propo ) about concussions. Prim s cat Buttercup s nightly Crazy Cat game helps relieve the boredom of life in the bunkers of District 13. Contact a local animal shelter or rescue group and ask how you can help their animals. Perhaps you can collect old blankets and towels for bedding or sew catnip toys to donate. 5. Shining Moments Amid Tragedy The rebellion against the Capitol is led by President Alma Coin. Visit the U.S. Mint website and learn how coins are made. Why should Girl Scouts be interested in the coin honoring President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover? The United States has not been successful in introducing a dollar coin, and the failed attempts have all featured women in the design. Create your own design for a dollar coin. Flowers are everywhere in The Hunger Games. Characters are named for flowers, and the designs of the Odds Are, Rising Tide, and Small Change all incorporate flowers. What is the significance of the dandelion, white rose, and primrose? Collect flowers and leaves from near your home, meeting site, or camp and press them until they are flat. Use the pressed flowers to create a card, gift tag, picture, or bookmark. One highlight of Mockingjay is the wedding between Finnick and Annie. Although he is still recovering from the horrors inflicted by President Snow, Peeta uses his icing artistry to create a lavish wedding cake for the couple. Have a cupcake party with your troop and experiment with different icing techniques, including piped icing and fondant. Color white icing to customize the look.
