1 Rising Tide A patch program based on Catching Fire, part of the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Contact: Ann Robertson (ann@robertsonwriting.com) The Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins have sold millions of copies to devoted fans. Readers are drawn in to the story of Katniss Everdeen, whose brave acts of self- sacrifice inspire ordinary citizens to take a stand against violence and cruelty. To earn the Rising Tide patch you must complete the required activity as well as at least one activity in each of the six sections. You do not have to complete the Odds Are patch before working on Rising Tide. Required Read at least one of the novels in the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins or view one of the movies inspired by the books. Agree not to reveal any spoilers in any of the books that your troop- mates have not also read. The Hunger Games take place in the future, in the fictional country of Panem, which is located in roughly the same place as the continental United States. Each Hunger Games begins with a history lesson that explains how an earlier civilization, North America, was destroyed by disasters and war. In time, Panem emerged from the ruins of North America, consisting of a Capitol and 13 Districts. When the districts attempted to overthrow the Capitol, the rebellion was brutally put down. The resulting Treaty of Treason created the Hunger Games as a way to instill fear and obedience in the Districts so they will never rebel again. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are chosen to represent District 12 in the 74 th Hunger Games. When they realize they are the only Tributes left alive near the end of the competition, they threaten to commit suicide rather than kill each other. That act of rebellion inspires other Districts to rise up against the Capitol.
2 Katniss may only be seventeen, but Panem looks to her for inspiration and guidance. What about Katniss makes her a good leader? How does she react to having this unexpected responsibility? 1. The Victor s Village Winners of the Hunger Games are given luxurious new houses in the Victor s Village, an exclusive neighborhood in each District. When Catching Fire begins, the Everdeens and Mellarks have moved into two of the dozen mansions in the village. The only other resident is Haymitch, whose house may never have been cleaned since he moved in 25 years ago. Despite the luxuries of her new home, Katniss still sneaks away at times to visit the tiny house where she grew up and the cement cabin by the lake. Catching Fire takes place during the winter, so the only time we see the Victor s Village it is covered with snow. Try building your own gingerbread version of the Victor s Village with your troop. See how many buildings you can construct and be sure to include lots of white icing for snow. Try designing your dream house. Where would you like to live? A mansion in the country, a townhouse in the city, a log cabin in the woods? Thinking of how many rooms you will need plus any specialized spaces, like garages, gardens, hot tubs, game room, etc. Sketch the results, either as a floor plan or a detailed drawing, or build a model of your perfect space. Speak with an architect, interior designer, engineer, or general contractor to find out about careers related to buildings. 2. The Victory Tour Katniss and Peeta embark on the traditional Victory Tour, making appearances in each District before culminating in a huge celebration in the Capitol. But along the way, they notice some odd things. The mockingjay, the bird on the pin Katniss wore as her good luck token, has become a trendy symbol. It is on the custom pocket watch used by the new head gameskeeper, Plutarch Heavensbee. In District 11, the audience spontaneously salute Katniss and Peeta with the three- finger salute she used to say goodbye to a District 11 tribute during the games. An old man whistles a four- note tune that the tribute had sung to Katniss. The symbol, salute, and song have become a form of communication. What are they trying to say? There are many ways to communicate without speaking. Learn about other forms of non- verbal communication.
3 Trail signs are a weather- resistant way to leave directions for hikers. Learn to recognize basic trail signs and lay a simple trail for your troop or another group to follow. Find out about the signs that were used to mark the Underground Railroad. Learn about American Sign Language, including the manual alphabet. Learn how to sign the Girl Scout Promise. What simple signs do you think the Avoxes would find useful? What is a trinket? What is the significance of Effie s name? Are there other characters whose names also describe their personality? What is a Katniss? 3. Opening Ceremonies Cinna and the other stylists design dramatic costumes for the Tributes to wear in the chariot parades based on the characteristics of their home district. Beauty pageants similarly have contestants wearing designs inspired by local products, sites, and crops. Take a look at some of the over- the- top creations from the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants, then try designing an outfit that represents your state, city, or school. For her interview, Katniss wears the wedding dress that Cinna designed for her, not knowing of the symbolic transformation that happens when she twirls. Wedding dresses have always been far more than just an item of clothing. Learn about the symbols and traditions connected to wedding dress designs. What would you incorporate into a design to make it yours? What would be your something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue? During his interview, Peeta confesses that he and Katniss have already married in a traditional District 12 ceremony. Find out what the minimum age for marriage is in your state. Do you think it is too low? Too high? 4. Training Center: Meet the Other Tributes Let us pause for a moment to appreciate the legendary victor from District Four: Finnick Odair. Shall we list the many qualities he brings to the Quarter Quell? He is an expert fisherman, can throw his trident far and true, knows dozens of knots, and can weave a basket out of fibers in a flash. Learn at least five basic knots:
4 Bowline Running Square knot Clove Hitch Half Hitch Fisherman s Knot Overhand Knot Sheep- Shank Lark s Head Slip Knot Katniss notices that Mags, the elderly female victor from District Four, can fashion fishhooks out almost any material. We don t know if Mags ever made jewelry using fishhooks, but it s quite easy to do with fishing swivels a piece of fishing tackle that opens like a safety pin. Give it a try! Both Finnick and Mags weave mats and bowls using items they find in the arena. Learn to weave a friendship bracelet or try weaving a bracelet, belt or make a flower with plarn yarn made from plastic bags. 5. Survival Skills Even though the arena is an island, the tributes must locate fresh water to drink because the island is surrounded by salt water. Haymitch sends them a spile to tap water in the trees. It takes them several tries, but they eventually learn how to position the spile correctly. Assuming you don t have access to any Panem trees, try the next best thing: learn how to open a coconut and extract the liquid. Wiress realizes that weather changes are regular and significant but struggles to communicate that to Katniss. How can you find out if dangerous weather is approaching? List at least three methods. What causes the following: thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, sleet, hail and rain? Imagine you are a weathercaster and prepare a 30- second emergency broadcast message that explains what is about to happen and what to do to prepare for it. Finnick uses a form of cardio- pulmonary resuscitation to revive Peeta. Learn how to perform CPR yourself.
5 Mrs. Everdeen plays a larger role in Catching Fire, and we learn more about her excellent skills as a healer. She soothes the horrific wounds Gale received from a lashing in the town square. Ask a trained health care provider how to treat some of the injuries mentioned in Catching Fire, including: Electrocution Frostbite Shock Deep cuts Drowning Jelly- fish stings Rabies Poisoning Nut allergy Animal bites Migraines 6. Life and the Games The annual Hunger Games provide thousands of jobs throughout Panem, including trainers, publicists, stylists, and television production crews. Visit a local television station to learn what it is like to cover breaking news. Ask reporters, including the sportscaster, what it is like to cover unfolding events. Does the station have a stylist? Who is responsible for wardrobe and makeup? Panem becomes much more militarized during Catching Fire, and the Peacekeepers are much more visible and much more oppressive. Find out what the entrance requirements are to become a police officer, to join a branch of the U.S. military, and to become a United Nations Peacekeeper. Will you get any special treatment if you have your Gold Award? What is capital punishment? How is it practiced in Panem? Is capital punishment legal in your state?
