1 Abstract Novels as an art from came to Indian with British. It was a new genre in Indian which attracted great writers. R.C.Dutt. Bankim Chandra and Tagore translated their novels into Engish. What distinguishes Indian English novel from the very beginning is its social concern, realism and its unfailing interest in man. Novelists from all parts of Indian contributed their mite to the development of Indian English novel. Indian English novelists have given expression to the hopes, aspirations, dreams and culture of a nation from the very beginning. The dawn of the 20 th century witnessed the advent of a great national awakening in india. Under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi the Indian Writers turned from romanticism to realism. The novel of commitment and propaganda is an offshoot of the realistic novel. Some of the Writers like Mulkraj Anand are ardent believers in the ideology they are writing about Raja Rao s commitment is also reflected in his novels. R.K. Naryan, Raja Rao and Mulkraj Anand are the three Musketeers of Indian English novel, began writing this period and won great distinction. The Indian English novelists of the present era inherited the cosmopolitan character and permeated a new sensibility in the their works which reflects the hopes and aspirations. Modern English novel is preoccupied with the inner life and individual problems of men and women passing through revolutionary changes Modern English fiction is conspicuous for realism. The Indian English novelists- Raja Rao,R.K. Naryan, Manohar malgaonkar,kamala Markandaya, Nayantara Sahgal, Ruth P. Jhabvala Anita Desai and Anita Nair have touched various facets of Indian Social life realistically and exposed the horried evils. The post independence novel has shown signs of maturity from the view point of technique, style and language. The present work is a presentation of Quest for self identity and the predicament of the character or the role played by the women..

Women have made remarkable contribution to Poetry and fiction in Indian English Literature. In Poetry and fiction there is ample scope for the expression of feminine sensibility which fails to find spontaneous expression in prose in English literature too many distinguished women novelists Jane Austen, George Eliots, the Bronte sisters, Mrs. Gaskell and Virginia woolf surpassed men qualitatively as well as numerically. Theyhad established their own great tradition. In Indian too Toru Dutt, the renowned poetess, wrote a novel in English and since then many omen written like Kamala Markandaya, Nayantara Sahgal Shashi Despande, Ruth P. Jhabvala, Anita Desai, Anita Nair etc The main purpose of the research is to find out the solution for the ultimate problems.and for that one has to explore the various psychological aspects in the women character in the different novels. Make focus on the predicament of the main protogonist in the both the writers novels. We have to study cultural, social and emotional backgrounds of affected women in the novels of both the writers, and study the true picture of male dominated world. Also focus on the idea of vision and equality of man and woman relationship. For that one has to have deeper understanding of both writer s work.mainly one has to learn the idea about feminism in the work of both the writer. The writers who appeared in Indian-English literary scene are of great importance. They gave birth to a new era which held out for the Indian woman opportunities for a dynamic participation in social life. Indian-English novelists, especially women novelists have made themselves as a significant entity by making the novel itself an instrument of social reform. They have sociological and reformistic motivation with their invariable theme that is woman. As a feminist at distinction, Shashi Deshpande is one of the eminent, notable and accomplished novelists of Indian-Writing in English. Gifted with a rare literary talent for writing, she has developed and matured with experiences of life. There is a special niche for her as well as her protagonists in the field of Indian-English novel. The spontaneity, which is found in her narrative art, makes her novels highly readable. She presents the problems and their reliable solutions because as a relevant unit for a happy individual as well as a healthy society, she believes in family. She does not believe in a readymade solution to the problem posed by situations. She gives her ideas about women in relation to their specific roles in life as she looks at the world in a particular way. Anita Nair is one of the finest women writers of modern India. Her novels have taken on an easy space, giving enough silage to an engaging reader, yet not being inscrutable. Anita Nair is one of the finest writers who demarcate her typical regional ambience of Kerala with its wide variety of people of all classes. She wrote five Novels so far. Basing on the trajectory of female identify. Ladies Coupe questions the status of women in a tradition-bound social order that sees women exclusively in the role of an obedient daughter, a docile wife and a breeder of children. Women in postcolonial India boldly defy such delimiting roles and assert self-dignity and personal freedom. In the atmosphere of feminism the wonder is that woman found a voice in critical theory and practice. The second chapter is Feminist Dilemma presented in The dark Holds No Terror by Shashi Despande. The story of Sarita the main heroine of the novel.the story reveals that Saru is a victim of many predicaments.from the childhood she faces the gender discrimination at her own house and her mother always torture her for brother s death that saru is responsible for that.here we find that Saru s mother being a woman she is forgetting her own role for dear daughter.being detest by the family Saru find love from Manu, her husband. But the destiny is different and Saru faces many difficulty with her husband.as Sarita is a doctor and having successful career is the only problem for Manu.Sarita never finds happinessat her parents house and even in husband s house.the chapter present the dilemma face by Sarita and at the end she decide something,that is the conclusion of the novel. Jaya s Quest For Identity in That Long Silence is the third chapter,and the writer is Shashi Despande. That long silence tells so many things from the protagonist Jaya.As the whole story woven around Jaya and her family. The mother of two children she is the best writer also,but her writing is a not appreciated by her husband. Whole life she lived according to her wish,as her writing was appreciated by the others the male ego hurts and the differences are grow more and more,and that s why she stop writing and wants to be happy in her life. But something is occurred in her inner heart to break the long silence, that so many years she has felt.she wants to rebel against it or not,that is the coclusion of the novel. The fourth chapter deals with Akhila s Journey Through Self Discovery in Ladies Coupe by Anita Nair,the new feminist voice for finding the identity of women. Her masterpiece novel which is the example of bold and beautiful. The Ladies Coupe is the story of six women who met for the first time in the train s ladies compartment. As ladies gathered and sharing of their personal experiences in the life.all are the victim of problems and sufferings.though they met for the first time they acquainted well with each other. The main protagonist is Akhila single and

5 lonely woman of forty five. The story reveals the issues and the sufferings of women in the modern era also. All are the sufferer but the story of Marikulunthu is make us thrilled. The writer s style is different and again new. The second last chapter of the thesis is Radha s Quest For Love in Mistress.Here quest for love,besides identity can show.the main heroine Radha married with Shyam, lived happy with eachother.but Radha is not contended with the life. Shyam loved her too much, that bother her. The fellow traveler Chris arrived and Radha finds pleasure with his company. She loved Chris, she liked him and wants the relation with him. As she is unsatisfied wife of Shyam she gets pleasure in the hands of Chris. As Chris love with her they enjoyed the relationship. Radha thinks that for Shyam she is only her mistress not a wife. Shyam knows the closeness of both of them,he knew that Radha come back with him. The novel make the reader to find the conclusion.here Nair s bold novel present the picture of different woman who longs for love. The last chapter is conclusion of all four novels. It gives the findings for the predicaments of women. Here we find the the new women and their empowerment. Here we find the women with raised voice and rebel against the injustice done to her. These type of novels give the different vision to all the readers. The time is changed now we have to change our mind. Now women have a voice and she never become silent anymore.
