4 Market Background 1/6 The recent growth of rich-content distribution over the Internet is increasing the size of data transfers. These large-capacity networks are supported by optical modules and devices. Optical module vendors concluded the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) as a policy for ensuring rapid market growth. The MSA standardizes interface parameter, control methods and package dimensions. And they stipulated in the IEEE/ITU-T/ANSI, etc., recommendations. However, since performance is a competitive marketing factor, there are issues about Interoperability among network equipments due to factors such as Jitter, Noise, Cross-talk, Receiver Tolerance, etc. This Anritsu instrument has been developed to meet these market needs. The MU181620A, MU181640A, and MX180002A support stable, high-accuracy, IEEE compliant Stressed Receiver Conformance Test. In addition, the Reference transmitter with variable extinction ratio offers a simple, space-saving, production-line system configuration to network equipment vendors and optical module vendors. IP Network Measurement Division 5 Market Background 2/6 What s s happen on real transmission path? 40km Optical Fiber XFP XFP Optical waveform of XFP Output Optical waveform through 40km optical fiber The Receiver of Network Equipment receives the impaired signal with Timing Jitter, Amplitude Noise (Interfere), Cross-talk, Insertion loss, Lack of bandwidth. Need to assure interoperability among Network Equipments IP Network Measurement Division 6 3

5 Market Background 3/6 Why Users need Stressed Eye Measurement? Need to assure interoperability among Network Equipments. For Optical module vendor, worst case testing is required before shipping. For Network Equipment vendor, receiving inspection is required before installing the optical module to Network Equipment. Various MSA is set up for expanding Optical module business and performing cost reduction by effect of mass-production. These optical modules produced based on MSA specification have variation of characteristic. It is necessary for testing that simulates a real transmission, and this test is effective in controlling this variation of characteristic and preventing trouble in the field. Stressed Receiver Conformance Test (Stressed Eye Measurement) was standardized by IEEE (10GbE standard). It is checked Stressed Receiver Sensitivity (SRS) and Receiver tolerance using the impaired signal. Receiver have to meet BER 1E-12 in this test condition. SRS :Stressed Receiver Sensitivity MSA : Multi Source Agreement IP Network Measurement Division 7 Market Background 4/6 Stressed Receiver Conformance Test Outline For generating Stressed Eye waveform inject Timing Jitter(SJ) to phase direction and Amplitude Noise (SI) to Amplitude direction, and adjust VECP (OMA and A0) The repeatability and accuracy is important for this Stressed Eye waveform. SJ OMA OMA and VECP OMA is the difference in optical power for the nominal 1 and 0 levels of the optical signal. VECP is eye closure at time-center of eye OMA (dbm) = P1-P2 VECP(dB) = 10log OMA A 0 SI Stressed Eye waveform Stressed Receiver Conformance Test block diagram Conformance test signal characteristic OMA : Optical Modulation Amplitude VECP: Vertical Eye Closure Penalty SJ : Sinusoidal Jitter SI : Sinusoidal Interfere IP Network Measurement Division 8 4

6 Market Background 5/6 The OMA value ( SRS) at BER 1E-12 is derived from BER characteristic to OMA by the power penalty test BER 1E-12 OMA 17 dbm 10G Base-L (1310nm) 10G Base-E (1550nm) SRS (min) in OMA dbm (0.093 mw) dbm (0.074 mw) Power penalty test OMA : Optical Modulation Amplitude SRS : Stressed Receiver Sensitivity IP Network Measurement Division 9 Market Background 6/6 Requirement for Reference Transmitter characteristic It is necessary to use the optical signal with the characteristic of already-known ER and VECP for the Reference transmitter used by evaluating optical modules. ER is specified in each application (10GbE, SONET/SDH). ER (minimum) : 8.2 to 10dB (SONET/SDH), 3 to 3.5dB (10GbE) VECP 0.5dB or less The repeatability and stability is important for this Reference transmitter waveform. ER ER is ratio in optical power for the nominal 1 and 0 levels of the optical signal. The signal with a large extinct ratio is a good signal. ER (db) = 10log P1 P2 Reference transmitter waveform Reference transmitter waveform characteristic ER : Extinction Ratio VECP: Vertical Eye Closure Penalty IP Network Measurement Division 10 5
