3 Introduction You are reading the instruction manual for the CD42-Tx-MPS transmitter. You will find it to be an extremely useful, rugged and reliable piece of OEM equipment that has a sole purpose of allowing inspection companies to track, locate and benchmark pipeline inspection pigs. The customer feedback that we receive regarding the system is exceptionally positive. We have many customers in all corners of the world that use this system and appreciate its usefulness, simplicity and ruggedness. Who Is CDI CDI is an electronics product development company located in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma near Tulsa. Founded in 1982, CDI has spent many years in the oil and gas industry creating a variety of industrial electronic products. Our diverse design and implementation experience in many fields gives us a unique capability to meet the needs of the pipeline pigging industry with more rugged, powerful and easy to use electronic devices. The Purpose of the CD42-Tx-MPS These transmitters operate on a wide input voltage and transmit a large signal that is detected with our CD47 Time-Based Bench Marker system for accurate bench marking of the pig data. Uses of the CD42-Tx-MPS are: o o o To trigger passages on the CD47 Above Ground Marker To allow an inspection tool to be located and tracked with a CD42 Tracking System To send pulse patterns to the operator about the status of the inspection tool. 4 Driver Module Overview The CD42-Tx-MPS is designed to be mounted inside of the inspection pig, usually in the nose. Several types are available for different line diameters. External Inputs These inputs are for external outputs from a computer (0 +5 VDC, 0 VDC is off, +5 VDC is on). The function of these inputs are described in the Mode of Operation Table. OFF / ON (White Wire) This input is rated for 0 +5 VDC logic output from a computer. A LOW level (0 VDC) will turn the transmission off from the transmitter. A HIGH level (+5 VDC) will turn the transmission on from the transmitter. Many designers choose to use this input to manually control the pattern emitted by the transmitter. You may do this by selecting the transmitter to run in Continuous Mode and then controlling this input via software. This allows various conditions of the tool to be indicated by the pulse pattern(s). Pulse / Continuous (Yellow Wire) This input is rated for 0 +5 VDC logic output from a computer. A LOW level (0 VDC) will enable the default pulsing transmission pattern from the transmitter. A HIGH level (+5 VDC) will turn the constant transmission on from the transmitter. Typically the pig runs with the transmitter in Continuous Mode. This provides for the most precise interpretation of the passages in the Marker software. If the tool gets stuck in the line the tool switches to Pulse Mode. This provides for the easiest signal for location of the tool and saves battery life. Power Supply The power supply input for the CD42-Tx-MPS System is capable of +9 to +24 VDC input allowing for the most flexibility. As the input voltage increases the output power increases proportionately. The power source should be a high current capability of about 3 Amps. Page 4

10 Testing Procedure This following test and test coil were developed to enable a CDI customer to compare the different types of CDI transmitters to each other and also to compare them with other manufactures transmitters. There are several advantages to this coil test over using a pig location receiver (for instance the CD42 system), they are listed below. Removal of the multiple variability s of the different receivers that might be used to perform the testing. Some of these variability s in receivers are gain variances and display accuracy between even the same brand of receiver. Lower Cost Same equipment use for all tests The output power detected by the coil can be compared to the Output Voltage for the appropriate coil in the Transmitter Coil Data chart (Figure 5). Once the measurement of the transmitters output power is measured with the Multi-Meter in the mvac mode the frequency of the transmitter can be measured with the Multi-Meter in the frequency mode. Testing a transmitter To test a transmitter with the test coil perform the test below. Slide the test coil over an operating transmitter that is in pulsing or constant on mode. Be sure to center the coil with the transmitter body at all times. Set the Multi-Meter to the mvac mode and start taking readings. As the coil is moved from one end of the transmitter to the other end the readings from the Multi-Meter will peak. Once the peak is located in a coarse way it needs to peaked up precisely. With the transmitter test coil peaked the reading from the Multi-Meter in mvac is the transmission power of the transmitter under test. Use peak detection on pulsing transmitters.
