4 Questions and Answers Panasonic launches the UK's first HD televisions with freesat HD built-in Panasonic are delighted to be supporting the launch of freesat which marks a major landmark in the development of Digital Television broadcasting in the UK Q. What is Freesat? A. Freesat is a brand new digital satellite TV service brought to you by the BBC and ITV. Freesat Launches in May 2008 and offers 80 + channels (ramping up to over 200 channels) providing high definition programmes and enhanced interactivity, completely free of charge. There is No contract, No Subscription and No hidden charges. You pay for the equipment and installation, that s it, there are no further payments to make. Q. How does it compare to Freeview? A. Freeview is a digital terrestrial service (received via a TV aerial) with a limited bandwidth. Unfortunately there is not enough channel space for Freeview to broadcast in high definition. Freesat however includes full HD programmes that are provided free of charge. Because of Freeview s limited bandwidth, plans to expand the number of channels are limited. Freesat as the name suggests, uses satellite broadcasts which has far more scope for expandability, to add new channels and grow the service in the future Many Consumers in the UK have invested in new HD Ready and Full HD televisions but many of them are still not receiving and watching High Definition programmes. 1 DOC: UK/CCC/TRAINING//PZ81 V1.1

5 Q. How does Freesat compare to Sky or Virgin Media? A. Freesat is not intended to compete with Sky TV. The concept of Freesat is that the services are completely free with no contracts and no subscription charges. Sky, Sky HD and Virgin Media services offer premium packaged programmes on a subscription basis over a contracted period. Many customers will want to continue their subscription to Sky or Virgin Media in order to receive the movies and sports packages offered by these providers. Q. What channels will I receive on Freesat? A. Freesat are planning to launch with over 80 TV and radio channels but new channels are being added every month. Most Freesat products have the ability to automatically update with the latest channels and services. Q. I can t receive Freeview. Will I be able to receive Freesat? A. Freesat uses satellite technology so you can receive the signal from a satellite dish in almost every home in the UK.

There may be restrictions in mounting a satellite dish in some circumstances such as rented properties, listed buildings etc. Please consult the property owner/ the local authorities if you have concerns. Q. What equipment will I need to receive Freesat? A. You will need to purchase either a set-top-box or a TV with a built in freesat tuner. Panasonic are the first to launch a range of integrated flat panel TVs with freesat built in. The first models to be released are TH- 46PZ81 and TH-42PZ81 with TH-50PZ81 to follow soon after. Further models are expected later in For more information please see our website at Q. What are the differences between using a set top box and an Integrated Freesat TV? A. The advantage of using a set-top-box receiver is that it can be added at any time to an existing TV. The advantages of an integrated freesat TV are that there is no additional box to find a space for, it s all built in the TV and only one remote control is necessary. You don t need to provide another mains socket for a box receiver. There are also no messy cables to connect. Simple! Q. How do I arrange installation and how much extra will it cost? A. Installation is arranged at the time of purchase and the one off installation fee is included in the price paid in the shop. Only freesat approved installers are used to install and set-up the equipment. There are no additional costs to pay the installer. Q. What if I already have a satellite dish fitted at my home. A. It may be possible to use an existing dish. 7 Q. Where can I buy an integrated Freesat TV? A. Q. How will the Digital Switchover affect Freesat viewers? A. Starting in 2008 and concluding in 2012, UK TV services will go completely digital, region by region. This process is called digital switchover. The UK s old analogue TV broadcast signals are being switched off and replaced by digital signals. TVs that have not been adapted to receive digital broadcasts when the digital switchover takes place will no longer be able to receive TV programmes. 13 Freesat TV Troubleshooting Problem Faulty Dish Possible Cause There could be a problem with the satellite cable or the dish. Physically check the cable to ensure that it is plugged in correctly and nor damaged in any way Remedy The problem could be with either the cable or the LNB on the dish. Most customers will not be able to check which is at fault other than visually inspecting that the cable is plugged it to the TV and has not been cut or damaged. The installer should be contacted to check the dish and cable. Bad Signal The signal is weak Check the aerial is plugged in properly. It may be necessary to have an aerial installer check the signal and aerial alignment No Service No Signal The broadcaster has stopped transmitting The TV cannot detect the signal Check the broadcaster s programme guide for transmission times. Please check the RF connections. Other Satellite Service list is full No more non- freesat services can be added. A maximum of 999 Other services can be added to the list. Max number of timers already set Child lock is active Press OK to enter PIN Feature not available A maximum of 15 timer programming events is available. The channel selected has been locked with a child lock. You must enter the PIN codes before the programme will be displayed. It is not possible to record from Component, HDMI or PC You can either cancel a less important timer event or you can wait until after one of the timer events has taken place and then add the new event. Press enter and then key in the 4 digit pin code (set by the person who locked the channel). 14 Freesat TV Troubleshooting Problem New DVB service found Press OK to start Auto Setup New Version *** found Possible Cause There may be new programmes available but this message will appear each time a change is made to the broadcaster s service New software version available. Remedy Use OK to search for new programmes or Exit to ignore the message. The New Service Message can be deactivated in the DVB tuning menu to prevent the message from appearing. It will still be possible to manually search for new programmes from the Add new DVB services setting in the same menu. Press OK to download the new version or press EXIT to ignore the new software. Ethernet Cable Not Connected Gateway does not answer Please confirm connection to the router IP Address Conflict IP Address not set The Ethernet cable is not plugged into the network or the TV or the cable is defective. A connection failure has occurred and the router is no longer responding A duplicate IP address has been detected. Check the IP addresses of other devices such as computers, routers etc to ensure that they do not use the same IP address. An IP address is required to use interactive services through the Ethernet connection The Ethernet cable is required for future interactive services and needs to be connected when using these services. Ensure that the cable is plugged into both the TV and the broadband router/ hub and that the hub light is on. Try another cable if this does not resolve the problem Check the connection to the router, disconnect and reconnect. In some cases it may be necessary to reset the router by powering off, waiting 30 seconds and powering back on again. Reset the TV by powering off and back on again. 15 Freesat TV Troubleshooting Problem No Sound can be heard from TV Stations No Sound can be heard from an external device (DVD, VCR, camcorder, satellite receiver etc). No sound or picture is produced from an external device (DVD, VCR, camcorder, satellite receiver etc). Freezing Picture/Sound, images disappear, mosaic areas appear on the screen when receiving digital broadcast programmes Possible Cause The sound may have been turned down to the minimum or muted Check the connections from the external device to the TV. Check the connections from the external device to the TV. Has the correct AV Input been selected? The most likely cause for all or some of these problems is a weak signal. Remedy Press and hold the volume up button and adjust to the desired level. Check the TV volume. If a Scart lead is being used ensure that it is is pushed in fully. Give it a wriggle as it is pushed in. If separate audio & video leads are used, check the audio leads (Red & White) are fully inserted into the correct connectors. Check the connections from the external device are plugged into the TV fully. Check that the correct AV input has been selected. The weak signal can be caused for a number of reasons: Check your postcode area is able to receive Freeview broadcasts at You may need a new aerial to successfully receive Freeview broadcasts in your area. Please consult your local Aerial Installation engineer. Approved engineers can be found on the CAI website Freeview programmes are being broadcast at a reduced power to prevent interference with analogue stations also being transmitted. The signal strength is not likely to be increased until the analogue transmitters are switched off over the next few years. 16 Freesat TV Troubleshooting Problem The TV does not switch on Possible Cause The TV is not connected to a wall socket or the wall socket is not switched on. Remedy Connect the TV to a working wall socket and switch it on. No stations were found during Auto Setup The fuse in the plug may have blown. The aerial may not be connected Remove the fuse from the plug and replace it with one of an identical rating. Connect the aerial and re-start Auto Setup The analogue channel number appears and remains on the TV screen The channel number appears on the top left corner of the screen. This is a selectable option Press the i button twice rapidly to clear the number. The channel number will still appear for a short while when a channel is changed. Older TVs have a Status button. Instead of the i button Status Button - No Image visible on the screen The TV may be in standby mode. Press the Power button on the remote controller to switch on. Black and white picture from an external device The manually selected aspect ratio is not retained when playing and medial on an external device. Timer switches to standby mode by itself TV may be set to AV mode with no signal to the selected input. Brightness and contrast may be set to minimum The input on the TV may be set incorrectly. The selected aspect can be overridden when connected with an HDMI connection The TV will switch to standby after 30 minutes if no signal is received. Select a TV station or select the correct AV input for the external device Check the picture settings and adjust them. Check that the output of the external unit matches the input of the TV. If the external device is set to output S-Video the input on the TV must also be set to S-Video (AV1-S or AV2-S) To force the screen into the desired aspect mode, begin playback of the source media first and use the TV Aspect button to select the desired mode. 17 Freesat TV Troubleshooting Problem Remote control does not work or is intermittent. Possible Cause The batteries are running low The remote control is outside the correct operating angle. Remedy Replace the batteries Point the remote control directly at the front of the TV (within a 30 degree angle of the front of the TV. An unusual Image is displayed Viera Link functions do not work. A pin code for Child Lock or Owner ID has been set but forgotten Some of the information in the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) is greyed out and cannot be accessed Some Freesat programmes do not produce the sound in English by default. Sunlight or another source of bright light is shining on the TV s remote receiver. This could be caused by a glitch in the software or by the broadcaster The external device may not have been recognised by the TVs HDMI input or the external device may have been changed. The Owner ID Information and Child Lock of programmes cannot be changed without the correct PIN code The contents of the EPG are transmitted by the broadcaster and may be unavailable. Some Multi-language broadcasts because of the way that they are being transmitted, do not switch the language to English even though they broadcast in available in English and you have set English as the default language Situate the TV away from sunshine and other sources of bright light. Check the broadcast on another TV. Reset the TV by switching it off, waiting for ten seconds and switching it on again. If this does not resolve the problem, reset the TV using shipping condition Manually select the HDMI input on the TV that the external device is connected to. It will remain registered until it is disconnected and another device is connected. For security reasons the PIN cannot be changed or removed. Please refer to DSN Service Centre to have the PIN Reset. Proof of ownership will be required. Either the service is off air or the broadcaster is temporarily not transmitting the guide information. Try again later when the broadcaster is transmitting programmes. In this case use the Options button on the remote control and from the Language option, select English and press OK. Entering your Post Code Why is it necessary to enter a Post Code when setting up a Freesat TV? When installing a freesat TV and running the Auto-Setup you will be prompted to enter a post code.

The post code is used to indentify where in the UK you are located and to select the correct Local TV programmes for your area. The correct Local News and Local Weather programmes etc can then be watched on the BBC and ITV. If this step is skipped during the set-up process, the default location of Central London will be set and Local News and Weather broadcasts etc will be London based. The post code can be added or changed later. When entering your post code you must include the space in the characters entered, for example: - the post code RG128FP should be entered as RG12 8FP (with the space between the 12 and the 8). 15 DOC: UK/CCC/TRAINING//PZ81 V1.1

19 Updating Software on Freesat TV How does the software update process differ from that of Freeview? The main difference is that Panasonic Freeview equipment uses the Over the Air Download system (OAD) whereas the Freeview TV uses the newer System Software Update (SSU) system. The OAD system, once the software update has been approved by DTG, it is sent to the BBC to download on the next available slot that the manufacturer has allocated. This could be weeks after the software has been approved. With SSU, a channel is permanently allocated for system updates, so once the software has been approved for release, it can be sent to the required equipment almost immediately, without queuing for weeks. 20 Adding Other Satellite broadcasts It is possible to receive other free satellite broadcasts that are outside of the Freesat package. In order to do this it is necessary to search for Other Satellite Broadcasts using the procedure below.
