Dear user, to get started in a successful measurement very easily, we wrote this short manual, which describes the usage and handling of the meter on principle. Naturally this paper can t give all answers to all different measurements, but it was created to show you the easiest and shortest way to get the basic settings like range, cycle time and synchronization. Get in touch The rotary knob For a better survey the various setup possibilities are arranged in main menus (indicated by tabs) and submenus (indicated by Softkeys, in this paper printed bold). The rotary knob will help you to operate the power meter and navigate through the separate menus. Its function depends on the selected menu or settings. The main meaning of the knob is to switch to the submenus and the second one to change and adjust values. The following functions are possible: In main menus: Turn left or right to select tabs. Press to show the according submenu. In submenus: Turn the knob right to increase the values, turn left to degrade the selected value. Pressing the knob to confirm the values or switch back to the main menu. The function of the Softkeys is shown in the upper left corner of the Softkeys. For additional information refer the main user manual. The keyboard The number block is divided in three areas: First area: Press one of the upper six horizontal keys, marked with grey colour, to get to the menus of the measured values, like Current, Voltage and Power etc. Press one of the lower six horizontal keys, marked lilac, to get to the set up menus like general adjustments, Ranges, formula editor etc. 1/24
Second area: The light-grey interactive Softkeys, which change the function, depending on the selected submenu. Press the lilac vertical keys to get to special functions. Important for the first time is the Freeze Key, which stops the refreshing of the display values. Third area: At last there are the Enter and Esc keys, which have the same meaning as on a PC keyboard. Use Esc to confirm error messages or reject false selected values. The buttons F1 and F2 are function buttons. With F1 the the cursor go back and with F2 forward. 2/24
The status line This display section gives information of the running measurement, especially of the separate measurement channels: Measure Group Channel number Cycle time Measure mode Display Active Or Freeze Level indication I-channel Level indication U-channel LP Filter active Display of the remaining cycle time Syncronisation Source Figure 1: The status line 3/24
Adjustments The Misc. Menu After loading the default values mostly the contrast and the time have to be adjusted. The following display is shown after pressing Misc.: Figure 2: The Misc. Menu Press the Softkey contrast. With the rotary knob you can now adjust the value. To confirm the settings press the knob. Make the adjustments of time and date via the number block, the. is used as separation character. The Measure menu The settings in this menu are very important (among the settings in ranges menu) and decisive for the success of your measurement. Press the Measure Key and you will reach the menu to adjust the general settings. For the following measurements the settings can remain. The group tabs are described in the next section. 4/24
Figure 3: The Measure menu and the general settings In this menu all general parameters for the measurement are adjusted. The first selection you have to do, is to set up the measurement mode, Normal measurement, CE Test (Option L50 09), Flicker (Option L50 04) or Harmonic analysis (Option L50 08), pressing the Softkey Mode. To measure the power consumption the normal mode is the right one. 5/24
Figure 4: The selection of the measuring mode By pressing the rotary knob the according submenu opens and you can adjust the parameters. The values of the default state can remain. The function of the following parameters is very important: Cycle/s Aver Wiring Aron With this point you can set up the cycle time in seconds (must be higher than the period of the signal). After this time the display of the values is refreshed. Here you can setup, how many measuring cycles are averaged for the display. For example: If you choose 5 cycles, the display will always be averaged over the last 5 cycles (sliding average!). This adjustment gives the meter the information, how the equipment under test is connected to the LMG500. This is important for e.g. star - / delta conversion. Depending on this adjustment the power meter builds up logical groups in which the measurement channels are combined. Example: A three-phasesystem as group A and a one-phase-system as group B. This point is only available when you have chosen wiring 2+0 Channels, 2+1 Channels, 2+2 Channels. 6/24
Signal coupling, Synchronisation and Filter For several signals it is necessary to fit filters or change the signal coupling (like the coupling of an oscilloscope) to get the right values. You can adjust this settings separately for each group. To change the tabs only turn the rotary knob in the main measure menu. If now the display shows the Softkeys to set up the global values, press the rotary knob to get in the main menu. Select the group A tab, press the knob and the following display appears: Figure 5: The measure menu with group adjustments To measure the power consumption of the LMG500 the adjustments can remain. Have a look at the settings which are available. Select with the Softkeys between the following submenus: Sync Adjustment of the synchronisation source. The settings are made by pressing the Softkey. In the schematic picture the connection line changes depending on the selected source. Pay attention on the status line and press the Softkey until the E is reached. Now in the status line a black deposited AS, symbolises asynchronous synchronisation, is shown instead of the U1. If at any time of your measurement the AS occurs, the measurement results are useless. Press the Sync. Softkey once more to select U1 as the synchronisation source. 7/24
Demod HP LP Filt S-Coupl Selects the demodulator for the AM demodulation of the synchronisation signal. off No AM demodulation <1kHz Demodulation for signals with carrier <1kHz (like rapid fire control) >1kHz Demodulation for signals with carrier >1kHz (like Electronic lamp balasts) Selects a high pass filter for the synchronisation signal. off No filter selected >0.5Hz Signals > 0.5Hz are used >30Hz Signals > 30Hz are used Selects a low pass filter for the synchronisation signal. off No filter selected If you select another value, a low pass filter with respective frequency is used. A list of low pass filters is shown, which can be used to filter the signal to be measured. Here you define the signal coupling. This setting has no influence to the trigger signal! Possible settings are: AC+DC: AC: All parts of the signal are taken into calculation. Only the AC parts of the signal are taken into calculation. Many measurement errors are caused by wrong filter settings or asynchronous synchronisation. The adjustments of the synchronisation have no direct influence on the amplitude of the input signal, but they are necessary for displaying stable values. 8/24
The Ranges menu Figure 6: The ranges menu In this menu the ranges for voltage and current can be set up for each group. 9/24
The measurement results To show you the usage of the measurement results the meanings of the Softkeys are described exemplary at the default menu. The operation is identically in current, voltage and power menu. The Default values Figure 7: The Default menu with the representation of all channels In this menu, selectable by pressing the Default Key, all important values of the measured system can be read. The figure above shows all channels of the group and the total values at the same time. You can get this display by pressing the Softkey Chns and the setting all. Turning the rotary knob selects the group tabs. The Softkeys have the following functions: Chns Link Sum With this Softkey you can retrieve the different channels. Also you can select between one and three channels, depending on the adjusted wiring. Shows, if the option is fitted and the correct wiring adjusted, the linked values. Total values of the selected group, depending on the channels in the group. 10/24
Disp Toggles between the display of 11 (many) and 6 (few) values. The Current menu Figure 8: The current menu In this menu you can see all values of the current in the system. Please note the Softkey: Inrsh This Softkeys is used to reset the register of the peak value of the current. After this the next peak value of the current will be stored in this register. The typical application is the determination of the inrush current of an equipment under test. Please note, that all voltage and current channels must be switched to Manual. An additional important hint: Inrush currents can be very high. At this example the importance of the correct synchronisation should be marked once more. If at any menu the correct frequency is shown, e.g. measurement of a frequency converter or motor its fundamental frequency, the results are correct (like a standing graph at an oscilloscope). If a synchronisation is adjusted and an incorrect frequency is shown, the synchronisation must be corrected, e.g. using filters for high distorted signals. 11/24
If you have measured the inrush current, you must switch on the autorange function in voltage and current menu to get the same results, like in the shown screenshots. The Voltage menu Figure 9: The voltage menu In this menu all values of the systems voltage can be read. The Power menu Figure 10: The power menu adjusted to 1 channel and many. 12/24
In this menu all values of the systems power can be read. Hint: This precision power meter can display many various measured and calculated values. You can even choose 12 variables, with which you can calculated your own formulas, e.g. the efficiency of a system (refer Error! Reference source not found.). The usage of the formula editor is described in detail in the user manual. Graphical representations The Graph menu The meter also provides a graphical representation of the measured values. Pressing the Graph Key, you will get to the graphical displays. The usage of the menus should be described exemplarity at the scope function. Additional to this there is a summary of the operation with the plotmenu to. The Scope function (Tab Scp A) Figure 11: The Graph menu with the scope function 13/24
The Plot menu To get to the plot menu, change from the scope menu to the main menu by pressing the rotary knob. The Softkeys disappear and you can change the tabs. Select the tab plot with the rotary knob. Figure 12: The plot menu In this screenshot you can see the power and the frequency of the first channel. The operation of the Softkeys is identically to the operation in scope menu. The only difference is the adjustment of the signal: 1. Press the rotary knob to get into the submenu and to display the Softkeys. 2. Press Signal to adjust the signal for the first graph A. An additional submenu opens. 3. The signal must be adjusted by its symbolic represention, indicated by the T in the Softkey Signal, because you can display all measured and calculated values over the time. 4. Press the Softkey Signal. A text editor opens, the cursor flashes in the signal field. 5. Erase the whole content with the Softkey <-. For an easier use all variables can be called by pressing the according menu keys. 14/24
6. Press the Key Power and select P with the rotary knob. Confirm your selection and the P is copied in the signal field. With the Softkey Mode you can change the function of the pressing of the rotary knob. At the moment is this function copy, what means that the symbol marked in the text field on the upper position is copied to the cursor position. With move you can move the cursor in the input field. Line moves the cursor in lines. 7. Turn the mark with the rotary knob to the : and press it. The : is copied to the input mask, copy in the 1 for the first channel in the same way. 8. Confirm your input with the Softkey End and the Key Enter. 9. Switch on the splitted display with Split. If there are now four graphs, change to the graphs C and D and erase the signals. The lower two graphs disappear. To get the optimum resolution, change to the wanted graph, with Graph and press Fit. Additional description of the Softkeys: y Move Fit In this submenu you can set up the offset and the scaling. In this submenu you can choose the cursor, which can be moved by the rotary knob. With this Softkey you get the optimum resolution automatically. 15/24
Additional displays and menus Now you know the usage of the tabs, the rotary knob and the Softkeys. The next sections should only give you an overview of the functions of the power meter. We didn t care about the explanation of the usage. All the figures were taken measuring the power consumption and you can use them for a direct comparison. 6.0 The CEHarm Mode Change from the Measure main menu to the CEHarm Mode. This is the start submenu of the CEHarm Mode. Now you must adjust which conditions and according to which standards the equipment is tested. Because the measurement is according to standards only the absolutely necessary adjustments may be changed by the user. Most settings are given by the meter. 16/24
The current menu. In this test the equipment seems to be into the limits, indicated by the hook in the lower right corner. The voltage menu. The equipment under test now violates the limits of all odd harmonics, indicated by the! and the X in the lower right corner. (Using direct line voltage the limits according to the standards are mostly violated.) Because of the failed voltage result, the current measurement according to the standards is also failed. The IntVal menu. In this menu you get an overview of all measured values. The measurement is taken in the interval written in the first line of this display and is started by pressing the Start Key and stopped using Stop. 17/24
The Graph menu. In this spectrum you can see the harmonics of the input voltage. Here you can see the spectrum of the current. The limits are also shown. The operations in this menu are the same like in Scope menu (refer Error! Reference source not found.). 18/24
The Flicker mode Change from the Measure main menu to the flicker mode. This mode shows you the flicker values of the measured device. The values you can see here are displayed in the IntValue. menu. You can see the long and short time values measured with the standard time intervals (2h and 10min). The measurement is started with Start and stopped with Stop. Hint: After pressing the Start Key there will be 8 seconds before the measurement begins. In this plot menu the half wave voltage and the half wave power is shown. 19/24
The Harm100 Mode Change into the Harm100 mode from the Measure main menu. The voltage menu. Here you get a list of all harmonics of the voltage. Additional to this the phase angles are displayed. In the power menu the apparent, active and reactive power are displayed for every harmonic. The negative values at 3 rd the 5 th and 7 th harmonic indicate, that the power is fed back to the line. 20/24
The graph menu. In this figure you can see the spectrum from voltage and current. The cursors mark the 3 rd harmonic for easier determination of the values (e.g. yn in the box left to the spectrum). The Formula editor Press Custom to get to the formula editor. With this feature you can calculate 12 variables with all the measured values. In this example we calculated efficiency. Therefore the input voltage and current is connected to the fourth channel too. With channel 1 of the LMG500 we measure the input power of the unit under test and with channel 4 the output power. To get in the Script editor press the rotary knob and then Edit. To calculate the efficiency you must write the formula in the Script editor. Pzu is input power with the unit W for Watt. Pab is the output power. Wirk is the efficiency. To exit the Script editor push the button End For more information look at the user Manuel 21/24
section 4.4 In Vars you can see the variables. Create a new menu to show calculate, and measured Values on one Display. Also you can show scopes and plots. To give the menu a name push Name. With Form you can change the partition of the menu. To create the menu Wirk push Make new. 22/24
The Custom menu. Here you can see all calculated values. To add new variables to the menu press Edit item. Then select the typ Name + Value. After that select Prop and press the button Custom to select the variable. By Front is nothing to selected. Using a ZES sensor At the last page you can see a various range of sensors, which are provided for the LMG500. The easy and comfortable use is described in the following section. After connecting the enclosed current clamp by using L50-Z14 adapter you can see this display in the ranges menu, tab Sense/More. The intelligent clamp adjusts all settings on its own. Hint: Please connect the sensors first to the power meter, because there may be very high voltages on the secondary of a current clamp. 23/24
After connecting the clamp the ranges will also be changed automatically (lower left side). Now connect the clamp to the I* path and compare the value with the value of the direct measurement. Hint: In case the active power is shown with a negative sign, the current flow is in false direction through the clamp. For a better survey the various setup possibilities are arranged in main menus and submenus. The rotary knob will help you to adjust several values of the menus. 24/24
