2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1/2) HVDC double circuit 2 x 1000 MW BAIXAS VIC GAUDIERE HVDC RIUDARENES STA LLOGAIA RAMIS BESCANO 2 independent d systems ± 320 kv DC (No need of MV cable for earthing connection) 65 km length (32 km Spain + 33 km France) 8 km tunnel (1 km ES + 7 km FR), 3,5 m inner F Rest by independent trenches: 2 x (31 km ES + 26 km FR) Extruded cables: 4 x (32 km ES + 33 km FR) Converter stations (AC/DC) VSC technology (Voltage Source Converter) Santa Llogaia: 2 converter stations Baixas: 2 converter stations AC substations are not part of the project Baixas AC substation: existing Santa Llogaia AC substation: to be done 2

4 VSC TECHNOLOGY vs LCC (1/2) LCC: Line Commutated Converters Based on thyristors: Only start up control (no shut down control) Current flow only in one direction power flow reversed only by reversing the voltage polarity Ati Active power control l(depending di on the thyristors t firing i angle applied on the network voltage) AC network voltage must be available Reactive power consumption (no reactive power control) VSC: Voltage Source Converter Based on IGBTs: Start up and shut down control Current flow bidirectional voltage polarity does not need to be reversed to change the power flow direction Active and reactive power independent controls (based on the control of each IGBT to be conducing or blocked: phase angle and module of the voltage is chosen to build the required voltage signal in order to get the P and Q order) AC network voltage is not required (just a voltage reference is needed) Black start capability 4
