9 Symbols Overvoltage installation categories, according to IEC IV I Measurement category IV is for measurements performed at the source of the low-voltage installation Measurement category I is for measurements performed on circuits not directly connected to MAINS III Measurement category III is for measurements performed in the building installation Measurement category II is for measurements performed on circuits directly connected to the low voltage installation II I CAT I Examples are measurements on circuits not derived from MAINS, and specially protected (internal) MAINS-derived circuits. All electrical measurement equipment can be calibrated (multimeters, current clamps, temperaturemeters, installation testers, power meters, safety testers, etc.) You receive automatically an anual notice to have your instruments calibrated, after registration. This way you do not have to worry about the validity of the calibration of your instruments. Support Repairs Nieaf-Smitt has a modern repair division, meeting the ISO 9001 standard. Faults are dealt with quickly and with competence. Helpdesk Questions concerning the operation of a tester, the performance of a test or software can be addressed to our helpdesk. For detection of voltage or non-voltage we offer you the Non-Contact-Voltage-Detectors. Whether you want to measure voltage or recognise the phase sequence and even automatic measurement of voltage, current and resistance, the test tools are useful for everybody! 11

12 Test tools For safe and quick detection of voltage presence, four voltage detectors are available. Approaching a voltage leading part, the voltage detectors will indicate this in several ways. The VoltSpotter indicates optical, the VoltBeeper, VoltSafe and VoltPointer indicate both optical and acoustic signal. The Voltsafe and the VoltPointer are not only instruments for voltage detection but also for non-voltage detection. The line of voltage testers EazyVolt, offer the ability to measure and indicate the exact voltage (AC / DC), phase indication, phase rotation, continuity and even frequency (EazyVolt plus). The EazyAmp is a versatile electrical tester for measuring current up to 200A in a CAT IV 600V environment. The EazyTester is an universal and easy to use, fully automatic Test Tool. The instrument detecs and switches automatically to the quantity to be measured, based on a priority system. All the models and the differences between them are shown in the selection diagram below. 13 Test tools VoltSpotter Article number: Voltage detector The VoltSpotter, an automatic non-contact voltage detector, will indicate the presence of AC voltage by phase detection. An optical signal is given upon voltage presence, without touching the cable. When approaching an AC voltage, the LED in the partly transparent tip of the test tool will illuminate bright red. With the wide range of V AC and the stable design is determination of phase guaranteed. The VoltSpotter can be used in many service purposes, for detection of cable breach etc. The slim pen size shape makes the VoltSpotter quick and easy in use and storage. 14 Test tools VoltBeeper Article number: Voltage detector The VoltBeeper is an automatic non-contact voltage detector with optical and acoustic signal. When approaching an AC voltage, the LED in the partly transparent tip of the test tool will illuminate bright red as well as a beeping signal is given. This is very convenient for detection under bright (sunny) circumstances or hidden locations. The range of V AC makes the VoltBeeper universal applicable. As the acoustic signal is approx. 65 db, the tester can also be used in industrial surroundings. 15 Test tools VoltSafe Article number: Voltage detector The VoltSafe is an unique instrument, being a voltage detector ánd non-voltage detector. The detector is always activated and gives a (red) optical and an acoustic signal upon the presence of AC voltage. By activating the on/off switch, the correct operation of the detector is checked (selftest). A single beep will sound and the probe tip will illuminate shortly. Both the pcb as well as the battery power are tested. The proper functioning of the unit is proved and a green LED is given for ~ 15 sec. Upon detection of voltage the VoltSafe will indicate both optical as acoustic. Since its functionality was tested, no indication of the VoltSafe means no detection of voltage; non-voltage detection. With the range of V AC and the acoustic signal of 65 db, the VoltSafe is a universal instrument and can be used in many service purposes. 16 Test tools VoltPointer Article number: Voltage detector The VoltPointer has equal functions to the VoltSafe; it is a voltage detector ánd non-voltage indicator. The detector is always activated and will automatically give a (red) optical and an acoustic signal upon the presence of voltage. By activating the on/off switch, the correct operation of the detector is checked (selftest). A single beep will sound and the probe tip will illuminate shortly. 21 Test tools EazyAmp Article number: Current Clamp The EazyAmp is a 2-pole voltage tester an a very user-friendly current clamp. With the open jaw, currents up to 200A AC can be measured quickly. 22 Test tools EazyTester Article number: Current Clamp The EazyTester is an universal and easy to use, fully automatic test tool to measure AC/DC voltages, AC current and resistance. The tester can also perform a continuity test, has a Data Hold and an Auto Power Off function. The instrument detects and switches automatically to the value to be measured, based on a priority system. First the EazyTester will measure AC or DC voltages. In case this signal is (almost) missing, the tester will automatically switch into resistance mode. In case this signal cannot be indicated, the tester will automatically switch into AC current mode. With the clamp of the EazyTester, conductors upto 27 mm can be measured. The compact design makes the EasyTester easy in use and transport. The LCD-display, including Low-Battery indicator, is presenting all measured values clearly. Examples of such values are temperature or relative humidity. Situations, in which such values can be important, are working environments, utility etc. Other values are light- or sound level. The light level for example is important to measure at emergency exits. Nieaf-Smitt offers you a wide range of environmeters, which are easy to use and present you the measurements clearly. 27

This meter is one of the most compact available on the market. The NI T880 can measure temperatures without contact. 65 Earth leakage clamp Detection if an installation which is decreasing in quality is not always easy. Especially factors such as earth leakage or frequent tripping of the RCD are difficult to trace. In most of these cases the access to the installation is influencing the time of the inspection negatively and in many cases it will make an inspection or repair very expensive. For such problems, an earth leakage clamp is most convenient. 65

66 Earth leakage clamp Earth leakage clamp The best way to explain a possible problem situation is by a simple example. Suppose an installation is completely or partially out of order. The installer is called to solve the problem, and finds out that the RCD is causing the trouble. When a difference between phase and neutral occurs, the RCD trips, due to an obvious leakage to earth. Frequently tripping means a continuous leakage. The most logical reason for this problem is an decreased insulation resistance to phase and earth. In order to detect this problem, the installer decides to perform an insulation resistance test. To do so, all cables of the installation will need to be diverted and disconnected from the installation. In addition to this the installation is equipped with high sensitive appliances and equipment. Performing an insulation resistance test will seriously damage these devices. The customer however, wishes to continue operation or at least keep the time for the inspection as short as possible. In this example, an earth leakage clamp can be used for measuring a leakage current or differential current. The clamp can also be used for locating such currents without having to disconnect or switch off the installation. This saves a lot of time and money! 67 Earth leakage clamp NI 333 Article number: Earth leakage clamp At first, the NI 333 looks like a normal current clamp. Nevertheless, the special integrated technique of the jaw enables the user to measure very low or differential currents. The NI 333 is designed with an ergonomic housing with a wide jaw (opening). With this jaw, conductors up to 30 mm. can be measured easily. The jaw of the clamp is very sensitive, yet very well isolated. This enables the user to measure not only within the standard frequency of 50/60 Hz, but also at higher frequencies. In order to filter the disturbance of high frequencies, a special filter has been developed. This widens the range from 40Hz up to 1kHz. All measured values are displayed on the LCD screen. Multimeters are mostly limited in their range or capacity (for example 10A). Besides, such instruments are unable to measure currents without making contact to the conductor. 69

70 Current clamp adapters Current clamp adapters Current clamp adapters are developed to be a simple accessory and / or extension to a digital multimeter or other instruments. These adapters are standard equipped with two connectors for connection to a multimeter and a curled cable for measuring at a distance of the instrument. By using the same technique as standard current clamps, the current clamp adapters have a completely isolated jaw. This makes it possible to accurately measure higher currents up to 1000A. In case of using an analyser or data logger, the instruments are designed to store, analyse and display different values. For measuring currents with these Power Analysers several clamp adapters are available. The portfolio of clamp adapters is build up by several different models, each with its own size, range or type of jaw. The mini adapters have a range of 20 or 200 Amps, Becase of their small size, the adapters can be carried and used easily. The jaw of 15 x 17mm can be used for most conductors / cables in a low voltage installation. In case higher currents have to be measured, clamps with a range of 400A and 1000A are available. These adapters can be used for larger conductors of heavy installations or appliances. The jaw is 52mm and therefore easy to use in every application. Due to lack of room, some applications do not allow the use of a standard jaw of a current clamp adapter. For these situations a flexible clamp is available. The flex clamp has one flexible head, which can be mounted around a conductor easily. 70
