4 Foreword This book tells the reader how to test the working parameters of electronic components and how to accurately measure electrical values. It is appreciated that manufacturers carry out exhaustive testing of their products and in so doing employ a great deal of sophisticated equipment which is not generally available to the component user; thus this book does not attempt to duplicate those tests, it confines itself to an examination of component evaluation exercises which are within the powers of the component user and which will provide him with sensible and accurate data. The chapters on the measurement of electrical quantities are also essentially practical appraisals and inform the engineer how best to employ the available instrumentation in such a way as to avoid gross measurement errors and obtain sensible results. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 deal with conventional electronic components -resistors, capacitors and coils and transformers - and their treatment centres mainly upon these devices being used within the normal frequency ranges. The following three chapters deal with three main classes of semiconductor device before the book moves on to integrated circuitry, which has been divided into analogue and digital operations. Chapters on gridded values and relays and switches complete the component coverage. The next nine chapters deal with measuring techniques and the first two of these cover the measurement of d.c. and a.c. voltage and currents. Frequency and time measurements and conventional bridge measuring techniques are next discussed before chapters 15 and 16 deal with impedance measurements and how to make them, employing such instruments as transformer ratio arm bridges; power measurement forms the basis of the next chapter. Oscilloscopes, vital tools of measurement, are dealt with by considering their use and particular applications and the last chapter considers the important aspects of generating test signals for general purpose testing functions.
