2 Welcome! ARIEL Advanced Technologies & Engineering Thank you for choosing the ARIEL's Place Trim Mixer. This Mixer enables both the aircraft's pilot and the copilot to trim the aircraft while preventing any conflict between the two different inputs. It also provides the pilot with the ability of disabling the copilot's input. Each unit is tested 00% prior to packing, and I'm sure that this product will serve you for many years. About this Manual This manual will guide you on how to install and wire the mixer, and on how to use it. It is strongly recommended that you read the entire manual before attempting to install and use your Place Trim Mixer. I also encourage you to spend some time to familiarize yourself with the wiring diagram of the trim system (see Fig.). If you have any questions don't hesitate to me your questions and I'll make any attempt to return a satisfactory answer. 3 Description The Place Trim Mixer is solid-state SMT equipment designed to replace the traditional mechanical relays earlier used for two pilots to operate the aircraft's trim system while adding the advantages of logic functions found in electronic equipment. The mixer incorporates MOSFET (Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor) transistors for switching the high current with no moving parts and no any electrical arc to prevent fuel fumes ignition. The trim system is formed of the following elements: (a) A mixer unit with connectors and a co-pilot SPST N.O. Isolate Switch. And the following are to be provided by the user: (b) Two "Chinese Hat" switches on both front and rear sticks grips (or left and right grips). (c) Two DC trim motors (such as the MAC Servo with or W/O connections to position indicator). (d) Harnesses. A key feature of the Place Trim Mixer is the prevention of a conflict between two opposite inputs (e.g. "UP" by the pilot and "DOWN" by the copilot). Once input is established by one of the crew, another input is ignored. The additional Isolate Switch enables the pilot to "Disable" any input commands from the copilot to the trim motors. 5 Dimensions: L x W x H mm x mm x mm (." x." x.0") Weight 00 gr. /. oz. Installation Prior the installation, make sure that the Place Trim Mixer has not been damaged during shipment. The mixer should be placed on a flat surface with at least one half inch clearance for each D-Type connector (including the connector's plastic hood). It is well recommended to use K000-0 "anchor nuts" (for - screws) or K000-0 (for - screws). For the electrical connections refer to Fig.. The wires between the unit and the "Chinese Hats" on the Stick Grips should be AWG Tefzel wires (MS-/-). In order to achieve correct operation, use a continuity tester and to make sure that moving the "Chinese Hat" to any desired direction makes continuity between the center ("Common") conductor (pin # in the D-Type connector) to the correct conductor as follows: "UP" to pin # "Down" to pin # "Right" to pin # "Left" to pin # The " Isolate Switch" is the "COM" terminal of the switch and should be connected to pin # of the "Pilot" D- Type connector and the "N.O" terminal should be connected to pin # of the D-Type connector. 6 (The Co-Pilot is disabled while the switch is "ON" -- Pins # and # are shorted). Repeat the same procedure for the Co-Pilot connector (there is no "Isolate Switch" switch for the Co-Pilots D- Type connector). Power (+VDC and Ground) are fed to the unit through the "POWER" D-Type connector as follows: "+V" to pins # & # "GND" to pins # & # Use two wires of AWG (MS-/-) for the +V, and two for the GND. Wiring the two "POWER" leads of each trim motor requires some experimenting. First, there is a need for the leads' polarity identification. Use a VDC source (such as a vehicle battery) and connect the "Power" leads of the "Attitude" trim motor to the source. The trim motor will move a certain direction. If the movement direction is such that it causes the aircraft nose to raise, the wire that is connected to the Positive Pole (+) of the battery is the "+UP" lead (and the other is the "+DOWN" lead). If the motor movement is towards "NOSE DOWN", the wire that is connected to the "(+)" side is the "+DOWN" lead and the other is the "+UP" lead. Same procedure should be taken to identify the two power leads of the "Roll" trim motor. Label the wires in order to connect them correctly to the D-Type connector.
