5 Connecting Supply and Receiver The NightFire LCU is powered by two-cell Lipo Batteries (2sLipo). That guarantees a very efficient and lightweight supply. The NightFire LCU with Optotronix HELCtech works high efficient, so the battery runtime is up to 80% longer. According it can be used a smaller battery for same runtime of your models lighting. The following battery capacities are recommended for one hour permanent operation of all outputs, using only 3Watt Power LEDs: Battery Recommendation Belegung der Ausgänge Empf. Be sure to pay attention to proper polarity: RED = PLUS, MINUS = BLACK. The Nightfire LCU is not protected against reverse polarity! Characteristics of supply The following properties characterize the supply of Nightfire LCU: Overtemperature Overload protection Caution: No reverse polarity! Connecting Receiver Connect the power cable for the receiver (twisted pair cable yellow - red - brown, see labeling receiver) to your receiver. To become familiar with the operation of Nightfire LCU, you can of course also connect to a servo tester. The signal input is electrically completely separated from the receiver, so negative reactions to the receiver are excluded. If there is no signal (no receiver is connected or invalid signal / defective signalwire) the red status LED is flashing. 5

6 LED- und Servo Outputs Pin assignment of Outputs The Nightfire LCU offers 17x2 outputs, 14x2 for the lighting (each plus / minus) and 3x2 for servomotors (signal / Plus / Minus). The following chart shows the assignment in view of the socket (the electronic labeling to the top): Servo Flash Outputs Permanent Outputs * Socket: - + Sig Sig Connecting LEDs In the matter of light power the Nightfire LCU sets new standards. Operated on all outputs are 3Watt emitters, resistors for the LEDs are not needed! Specifically recommended are SEOUL 3Watt Power LEDs, selling by Optotronix. At each of the outputs white and green 3Watt LEDs can be connected, for the red* position light only Output 7 is intended. If you want to connect more red LEDs + to other permanent outputs, not only Output 7, two matching resistors are included. For flashing outputs - you need no resistors. The right-hand chart shows the polarity of the SEOUL 3Watt power LEDs: Next to each pole is a small brass stub, which is scored on the minus side, but not on the plus side. Of course, other types of LEDs with lower power can be connected to the Nightfire LCU, but then resistors are required. Connect only micro servos, matching servos are offered by Optotronix as an accessory. 2 Typical 3mm, 5mm and SFlux LEDs 6

7 Operating the NightFire LCU Starting sequence When you connect the power supply (2s Lipo) to the Nightfire LCU, you will notice the following behavior of the status LEDs: Startup Sequence Pause Batterytest Pause The LCU is started. One second pause. Battery is tested. One second pause. Now, the Nightfire LCU is ready to operate and can be controlled by your transceiver. The activationpoints of the outputs can be defined in the programming mode. Batterytest During the startup sequence the connected lithium polymer battery will be tested. This battery test function can also be started at any time by short pressing the button, during the battery test the connected LEDs are disabled! The voltage of the battery can be read on the 14 status LEDs: LED Lipo 6,15V 6,3V 6,45V 6,6V 6,75V 6,9V 7,05V 7,2V 7,35V 7,5V 7,65V 7,8V 7,95V >8,1V If the voltage falls below 3.3 volts per cell, the red status LED lights continuously, that means that the battery needs to be recharged. If the voltage falls below 2.9 V per cell, the Nightfire LCU shuts down completely, to avoid a deep discharge of the battery and its destruction. If the receiver is inactive for more than 5mins the NightFire LCU will shut down. Stand Alone Mode This mode allows the operation of the model lighting, even if the receiving system is not switched on (e.g. at exhibitions), or may not be switched on (e.g. Building competition). Activate all light outputs which should be active and then push the button for at least 2 seconds. The green power LED now starts to flash, the Stand Alone mode is active and the electronic is no longer controlled by the receiver signal! Exit the Stand Alone mode by pushing the button 2 seconds again. 7

8 Programming Mode Starting the Programming Mode Connect the power supply to the Nightfire LCU. Hold the button permanently pressed before the startup sequence is completed. If the programming mode has been successfully started, all Outputs are flashing very quickly for 3 seconds. Programming Permanent Light Outputs The first status LED lights up and is now waiting that the activation point is programmed. This is the point at which the output is activated by pressing a switch at your transceiver. Activationpoint Save Activationpoints for every Output. Put the switch or proportional slider on the transceiver to the position at which the selected output should be active. Hold the button for 2 seconds to save and edit the next Output. Programming Flash Outputs Flash Outputs now offer the additional possibility of pressing the button short to select a flash sequence and view this flash sequence at the status LED. Zap by short pressing the button through the different flash sequences. Put the switch or proportional slider on the transceiver to the position in which the selected output should be active. Save the activation point and flash sequence by pressing the button for 2 seconds. With each flash sequence, you can choose if it should flash at the beginning, some time delayed, or long time delayed. This allows you to flash three positions on the model successively. The following flash sequences are available: Nr. 9 17 Strobo Flash 18 Strobo Flash 19 Optotronix Flash 20 Optotronix Flash 21 Optotronix Flash Programming the Servo Output For the connected servo motors it can be programmed start point, stop point and the point of activation. Start Point Stopp Point Activation Point If all Flash Outputs are programmed, the servo LED starts to flash slowly. With a proportional slider on the transceiver drive the servomotor exactly to the start position. Confirm by pressing the button 2 seconds. Now the servo LED flashes quickly. Adjust the stop position and then confirm again by pressing the button 2 seconds. Now the servo LED lights permanently. Put the switch or proportional sliders on the transceiver to the position in which the servo output should be active. Hold the button for 2 seconds to exit programming mode. READY - The Nightfire LCU is now fully programmed and can be used. IMPORTANT Connect Landing Lights beginning with Output 14 and Flashlights beginning with Output 6. So the NightFire LCU identifies the switching direction of the transceivers channel and adapts automatically. 9

10 Set back to factory settings You can set all parameters back to factory settings: Connect the Supply to the NightFire LCU. Hold the button permanently before the startup sequence has finished (this takes 2seconds). Starting the programming mode is confirmed with very fast flashing of all LEDs for 2 seconds, still hold the button permanently! Hold the button till the NightFire LCU restarts, now loose the button. The electronic is set back to factory settings. The distance of the NightFire LCU to the receiver has to be maximized, just as for every built in electronic. 3 Always confirmed by 3 times flash of red Mode LED 10

11 Warranty and legal information Optotronix shall issue a 24-month warranty on the NightFire LCU. There is no right to repair, Optotronix reserves the right to share in case of warranty the device against an equivalent product if a repair is not possible. This warranty expires when the module takes damage resulting from misuse, because the manufacturer has no influence on adherence to the manual, properr installation, use, maintenance and operation, no liability is assumed for the non-proper operation of the Nightfire LCU. Here The customer himself is responsible, because this product is installed without checking of the manufacturer in the corresponding model. For consequential damages, caused by a proven defect in the operation of Nightfire LCU we assume no liability. Further claims are excluded. The product is used only for model aircrafts. The Nightfire LCU has been suppressed by constructive measures. Negative influences on the quality of receiving cannot be completely ruled out. Therefore, before each use a trouble-free function should be checked. A receiver range test has to be carried out. General advise for RC models: the distance of an electronic module and the cables which are laid in the model to the receiver and the antenna should be maximized!
