These were the most upte moels furnishe y the mnufturers t the time. Multiple tests with full lo (pproximtely 700 W) were onute t room temperture to etermine hrge n ishrge times. For PB2000ITS the verge run time ws 3:31 n verge rehrge time ws 16:25 t room temperture. For ME1000, the verge ishrge n rehrge times were 2:32 n 42:16 respetively t room temperture. For DUI 24M11 the verge ishrge n rehrge times were 3:57 n 18:58 respetively t room temperture. All the UPS systems meet the mjority of the IDOT Speifition requirements, ut h some minor shortomings. 17. Key Wors 18. 5 OBJECTIVE The ojetive of this stuy is to test the Uninterruptile Power Supply (UPS) systems provie y the mnufturers n verify whether they meet the Speifition for UPS systems evelope y the Illinois Deprtment of Trnsporttion (IDOT) (1). The evlutions were onute t the Trffi Opertions L t the University of Illinois. Myers Power Prouts, TehPower Developments, In. n Dimensions Unlimite, In. re prospetive suppliers of UPS systems for IDOT. Myers Power Prouts furnishe unit of eh of two of their UPS moels: PB1250PC n PB2000ITS. Similrly, TehPower Developments, In. furnishe unit eh of its M1000 n ME1000 UPS systems. The results of evlution of Myers PB1250PC n TehPower M1000, whih were supplie erlier, hve een pulishe (2,3). Dimensions Unlimite, In. furnishe its DUI 24M11 UPS for evlution. This report isusses the methoology for testing (the sme methoology tht ws use for testing the erlier moels) n the results of the evlutions of Myers PB2000ITS, TehPower ME1000 n DUI 24M11 UPS systems performe t room temperture onitions. METHODOLOGY IDOT hs evelope UPS Speifition (1) tht is moele fter the ClTrns Speifition. Bse on the isussions with IDOT representtives, the vrious requirements of (luses) the UPS Speifition were lssifie into four tegories: Informtion tht is in ompny literture Questions ske from mnufturers/suppliers Visul inspetion of the unit Lortory experiment The tegories in whih eh of the luses ws ple is shown in the Appenies A-C. 6 Questions for Mnufturers The mnufturers were ontte n requeste to provie itionl informtion if it ws not ler from the literture whether their moels stisfie ertin luses. Also they were ske to provie ertifitions for the lims me in their literture, if ville. The luses in setion 5 of the Speifition el with the Qulity Assurne progrm, esign qulifition testing, n Proution qulity ontrol testing employe y the mnufturers. For exmple, QA proess n test results oumenttion shll e kept on file for minimum perio of seven yers (5.2 in IDOT Speifition). Sine this informtion is not puli knowlege, it ws eie tht pproprite questions e sent to the mnufturers to sertin if they stisfie these luses. Questions were sent to the mnufturers n their responses hve een inorporte in the report. Visul Inspetion For heking whether the UPS met ertin luses of the speifition, visul inspetion ws suffiient. For exmple, the temperture sensor shll e externl to the inverter/hrger unit. The temperture sensor shll ome with 2 meters (6 6 ) of wire (1.6.1 in IDOT Speifition). A visul hek ws performe on the moels n the results were inorporte. Lortory Experiment Certin luses of the speifition oul e verifie y running simple experiments, with reily ville equipment, t the Trffi Opertions L. For exmple, when the utility line power hs een restore t ove 105 VAC +/- 2 VAC for more thn 30 seons, the UPS shll ropout of ttery kup moe n return to utility line moe (1.11 in IDOT Speifition). The experiments performe were essentilly of three kins: rely ontt losures, swithing from AC to UPS n k, n ishrge n rehrge times of the tteries. NO n NC Rely Contt Closures The luses uner this group re relte to the four NO n NC (Normlly Open n Normlly lose) rely ontt losures tht nee to e provie n when they woul e energize. They re luses through For verifying these luses the events tht woul result in energizing the losures were rete n it ws verifie, if inee the losures were energize. For exmple, for verifying 1.3.1, while monitoring the rely, AC power ws shut own n it ws heke if the On Btt losure ws energize. Similr experiments were performe to verify the rest of the luses while monitoring the relys. 2

7 Swithing from AC to UPS n k The luses uner this group speify uner wht onitions the UPS shoul ypss/return to the utility power. Cluses 1.8, 1.11 n 1.12 ome uner this tegory. Dishrge n Rehrge Times The luses uner this tegory pertin to the urtion the tteries n power the lo n the urtion of hrging require for the tteries. They re n Dishrge Times: Aoring to the speifition, UPS STANDARD is require to power minimum lo of 700 W for minimum of two hours t room temperture. Using the LED signl moules n the intersetion pnel ville t the Trffi Opertions L, lo of roun 700 wtts ws set up. For mesuring the urtion of norml opertion, AC power ws shut own n the time the lo ws powere efore the tteries were shutown y the UPS to voi eep ishrge ws otine. Rehrge times: After every ishrge experiment, the tteries were put to hrge. While the tteries were eing hrge their voltge ws monitore using voltmeter tht oul log in the voltge reings into omputer. One the tteries were fully hrge, the voltge of the tteries woul stilize. Using the voltge t logge in to the omputer y the voltmeter, the time for fully rehrging the tteries ws otine. It is expete tht there woul e some vriility in the ishrge n rehrge times of the tteries. Therefore multiple tests re require to sertin if the systems meet the speifitions. Severl tests were performe for otining the ishrge n rehrge times of the tteries t room temperture. Bse on 90 % onfiene level, smple size 3

8 n the vrine in the test results, the error in the estimte ws otine. It ws foun tht in ll the ses the error ws signifintly less thn the tolerle error. Therefore further testing ws not onute. The results of these tests re isusse in the Test Results setion of the report. To ompre the men vlues returne y the tests to the speifition requirements, t- tests were performe. The test ssoites onfiene level with whih one n onlue tht the men vlue is greter or lesser thn the speifition requirement. The finings of the evlution re presente in Appenix A. Plese re the Comments olumn for n explntion of the speifi nswer. TEST RESULTS The results for MyersPB2000ITS UPS re presente first followe y the results for TehPower ME1000 UPS n Dimension 24M11 UPS. These were the most upte moels the mnufturer furnishe us t tht time. In eh setion the results for ishrging the tteries t full lo (700W) uner room temperture re presente followe y the results for rehrging. Myers PB2000ITS The UPS moel supplie y the mnufturer ws PB2000ITS n the tteries were Chirmn tteries (moel AGM-12100T, the sme tteries tht were use for evluting Myers PB1250PC UPS). The results of the ishrge tests performe t full lo for Myers PB2000ITS UPS t room temperture re shown in Tle 1 n Figure 2. 4

Therefore run time of the tteries is iretly relte to the speifie utoff voltge. In generl, the eeper the ishrge tteries go through, the fewer the numer of yles of hrge n ishrge the tteries n enure. During the testing the ttery voltge ws monitore n the t ws logge into omputer. Tle 1 shows the y of test, the run time n the voltge of one of the tteries t the eginning of the test n when the tteries were isonnete y the UPS. The men voltge t the eginning of the test ws VDC n the men voltge t the shutown point ws VDC. The voltge t shutown vrie from to VDC. The estimte of the error from the true men, se on these oservtions, is 5.2 minutes whih is 4.4% of 2 hours (IDOT speifition requirement). Therefore more tests were not performe. From Figure 2, we n see tht the urtion onsistently exees the speifition requirement of powering full lo for 2 hours. Bse on the results, the verge urtion the tteries powere the full lo ws 3:31 n the minimum n the mximum vlues re 3:20 n 3:42. Bse on these oservtions, n the results of t-test, it n e onlue tht the estimte men of 3:31 is greter thn 2:00 with onfiene level greter thn 99.9%. Therefore it n e onlue tht this system meets the speifition requirement for powering full lo. 5

The estimte of the error from the true men, se on these oservtions, is 25.4 minutes whih is 2.1% of 20 hours (IDOT speifition requirement). Therefore more tests were not performe. From Figure 3 we n see tht the time to fully hrge the tteries is onsistently n signifintly less thn the speifition requirement of 20 hours. The verge time to hrge the tteries fully ws 16:25 n the minimum n mximum vlues re 15:37 n 17:22. The speifition requires tht the rehrge time for the ttery, from protetive low-utoff to 80% or more of full ttery hrge pity, shll not exee twenty (20) hours. Bse on these oservtions, n the results of t-test, it n e onlue tht the estimte men of 16:25 is less thn 20:00 with onfiene level greter thn 99.9%. Tle 3 shows the y of test, the run time n the voltge of one of the tteries t the eginning of the test n when the tteries were isonnete y the UPS. The men voltge t the eginning of the test ws VDC n the men voltge t the shutown point ws VDC. The voltge t shutown vrie from to VDC. It shoul e note tht TehPower UPS is 24VDC system s oppose to Myers PB2000ITS whih is 48VDC system. From Figure 4, we n see tht the urtion onsistently exees the speifition requirement of powering full lo for 2 hours. The estimte of the error from the true men, se on these oservtions, is 4 minutes whih is 3.4% of 2 hours (speifition requirement). Therefore more tests were not performe. Bse on the results, the verge urtion the tteries powere the full lo ws 2:32 n the minimum n the mximum vlues re 2:20 n 2:41. Bse on these oservtions, n the results of t-test, it n e onlue tht the estimte men of 2:32 is greter thn 2:00 with onfiene level greter thn 99.9%. From Tle 4 we n see tht the urtion to fully hrge the tteries is onsistently higher thn 24 hours. It shoul e note tht the previous moel furnishe for evlution lso took longer thn 24 hours for hrging the tteries ompletely. The mnufturer lime tht the previous unit ws efetive n furnishe the newer moel. As it is evient from Tle 4, the time to rehrge the tteries ompletely rnge from 37:55 to 45:35. Therefore the TehPower ME1000 unit oes not meet the speifition requirement for hrging the tteries. 8

Similrly if the voltge is greter thn 110 VAC, ut lesser thn n upper limit, the UPS woul step-own the voltge to 110 VAC. This is lle Buk. When the line voltge is greter thn the upper limit or lesser thn the lower limit, the UPS woul isonnet the line power n supply ttery power. 9

14 The TehPower ME 1000 uses Buk n Boost pility to run the system on AC power without swithing to tteries. Therefore, the tteries re not use unless the AC voltge level flls to 75 V or goes ove 140V. The tul threshols it uses re shown in Tle 6. TehPower ME 1000 oes not use the tteries unless the line voltge is less thn 75VAC or greter thn 140 VAC. Therefore it woul use the tteries fewer numer of times thn wht it woul hve if it were to follow the speifition s threshols for swithing. Though it oes not stisfy the IDOT speifition, this feture of TehPower ME 1000 is vntgeous from the prtil point of view when the qulity of AC power t n intersetion is poor. Dimensions 24M11 The UPS moel supplie y the mnufturer ws 24M11 n tteries were Dek Unigy tteries (moel AGM-12100T). It shoul e note tht this system is lso (like 10

The speifition requires tht the rehrge time for the ttery, from protetive low-utoff to 80% or more of full ttery hrge pity, shll not exee twenty (20) hours. 18 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS The verge run time with full lo (pproximtely 700 W) t room temperture for Myers PB2000ITS ws 3 hrs 31 min n the verge time to hrge the tteries fully t room temperture ws 16 hrs 25 min. Myers PB1250PC UPS meets the speifition requirements for run time n rehrge time. The run time epens on temperture n utoff voltge n the men voltge of ttery t the shutown point ws VDC. Detils on how Myers PB2000ITS meets eh speifi requirement of the IDOT Speifition re given in Appenix A. The mjor shortomings of this moel re: this moel oes not hve NO n NC ontt losure for initing inverter/hrger filure. Also the fn in the ttery inet runs on 48VDC s oppose to the speifition requirement of running on AC power. This moel hs some minor shortomings suh s not proviing suffiiently long les, or-level shemti n wiring igrms et. In summry, Myers PB2000ITS UPS meets the mjority of the IDOT Speifition requirements. It hs the two mjor n some minor shortomings tht n e orrete to stisfy ll IDOT Speifition requirements. The verge run time with full lo (pproximtely 700 W) t room temperture for TehPower ME1000 ws 2 hrs 32 min n the verge time to hrge the tteries fully t room temperture ws 42 hrs 16 min. The run time t full lo meets the speifition requirements. However the TehPower ME1000 UPS oes not stisfy the IDOT speifition requirement for rehrging the tteries. The men voltge of the ttery string t the shutown point ws VDC. Detils on how TehPower ME1000 meets eh speifi requirement of the IDOT Speifition re given in Appenix B. The mjor shortomings of this moel re: The hrge time t room temperture oes not stisfy the speifition requirements. This moel oes not hve NO n NC ontt losure for initing tht the tteries rehe 40% level. The speifition requires tht eh UPS e given minimum 100 hr urn-in perio to th ny premture filures. However, the mnufturer gives 100 hr urn-in perio only to rnomly pike units. The supplie tteries re 55 Amp-hr while the speifition requires them to e t lest 65 Amp-hr. The UPS oes not hve temperture sensor for mesuring the temperture of the ttery. Also the UPS oes not shutown the hrging of the tteries when their temperture exees 50 C. The mnufturer is yet to supply ttery inet for evlution.
