(Source: International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (COLREG 1972), Part B, Section 1, Rule 5) SOLAS Chapter V Resolution MSC.99(73) Regulation 18 - Approval, surveys and performance standards of navigational systems and equipment and voyage data recorder Description Sound reception systems are acoustical electronic navigational aids to enable the officer on the watch to hear outside sound signals inside a totally enclosed bridge in order to perform the look-out function as required in the international Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, They should, in addition to the general requirements contained in Resolution A694(17), comply with the following minimum functional requirements. Functional requirements Sound reception systems should be capable of receiving sound signals from all directions in the audio band 70 Hz to 820 Hz, reproducing incoming sound signals acoustically inside the bridge, indicating the approximate direction of incoming sound signals to determine at least whether the sound signal being detected is forward or abaft of the beam and from which side of the ship it is being detected and suppressing unwanted background noise and allowing reception of meaningful sounds. Method of presentation Incoming sound signals should be reproduced inside the bridge by means of at least one loudspeaker. The volume should be adjusted by means of one volume control only. The volume control should be capable of being set so that the sound pressure level of an incoming signal only is at least 10 db(a) above the bridge noise level. There should be a display which gives a visual indication for at least 3s of the incoming signals and their approximate direction. Installation The microphones should be installed in such a way that they are as far from noise sources in the ship as is reasonably practicable and wind induced noise and mechanical vibrations are reasonably reduced. The display should be installed so that it is visible at least from the conning position. 14 SRD Testbox Test procedure Page 1 of 1 Introduction For the purpose to improve and have more convenient test procedures and where owners and yards ask for guidelines for general testing, as an option a seperate SRD testbox can be used for testing. The testbox is also applicable for testing the system where environmental noise suppression prevents other individual testing. Design The testbox is designed as a seperate handheld sound signaling device with built in battery and push button for test and test sound activation. An optional minor push button box with an extended cable can be connected to the main testbox. Test set up and testing The system is connected, commissioned and working in normal mode. The testbox shall be used handheld or fixed at approx. 30 cm from the mesh cylinder in front of the microphone. The loudspeaker releasing the test sound is on the reverse, therefore the test box must be held with this side towards the microphones! The testbox is placed into position, prepared and made ready for use at the Microphone Sensor Unit. If the Microphone Sensor Unit is placed beyond normal access, it is possible to fasten the testbox to a rod/metal bar and connect the extension cable. When test personnel is ready, the following procedure is to be followed: connect the system to the power board max. 1 minute after power connection activate the push button on the testbox this is confirmed by a sound from the Master Control Panel the system is in test mode now make test with a pulse on the push button, giving a double tone signal within the range of 300 to 350 Hz when the tone is released, the LED at the testbox is constant, but returning to pulsating light Test can now be procured by activating the push button with a pulse on the testbox. By holding the testbox at the given distance in front of the microphone, the direction indication will appear on the Master Control Panel. All directions can now be checked. After 5 minutes the system will automatically revert to normal mode. In normal mode it is also possible to use the testbox as control for the system. Note: It shall be noted that not all serial numbers of the SRD 414/2 have the special feature installed (e prom/software) for the special test set up. The test in normal mode is possible with all models. As the normal noise reduction facilities are working in test mode, it shall be noted that high ambient noise can disturb the test results. Check the built in battery voltage (9.5 V) frequently (test unit has a low power consumption /M.H. ZÖLLNER KIEL Änderungen Vorbehalten
