LoRa network a short introduction Irene de Ruijter, Erik Bruinzeel & Timme Hovinga KPN Internet of Everything 18 maart
Who are we? Erik Bruinzeel Technical Product Manager Internet of Everything Irene de Ruijter Program Manager IoT Academy Timme Hovinga Technical Product Manager Internet of Everything Internet of Everything Twitter: #kpnioe Linkedin: KPN IoE 2
In 2015, KPN will start the national rollout of LoRa, a new network technology LoRa is an open network technology comparable to wifi and bluetooth, but with a coverage of 3-15 km 3
With LoRa, devices can be connected to the internet over a long range 4
With LoRa, it s also possible for sensors to share relevant data 5
Application examples 6
Pilot case: Client: Developer of LoRa applications. Challenge: Measuring and reporting on the contents of beertanks that are in cellars, from a distance with the aim to save costs. Solution: By connecting the beertanks to LoRa they only have to be refilled when necessary. The result is less unnecessary kilometres and emergency deliveries on Saturday nights. Suppliers have realtime data on the temperature and bar owners cannot refill the tanks with a cheaper brand of beer without being noticed. 7
What is LoRa exactly? LoRa is a wide area network for IoT devices - Cellular technology - Energy efficient communication over long distances - Adaptive data rate based on signal strength - ETSI compliant ICM frequency band - KPN is a member of the LoRa Alliance 8
Class A, B & C Different classes for different usecases Bi-directional end-devices (Class A): End-devices of Class A allow for bi-directional communications whereby each end-device's uplink transmission is followed by two short downlink receive windows. The transmission slot scheduled by the end-device is based on its own communication needs with a small variation based on a random time basis (ALOHA-type of protocol). This Class A operation is the lowest power end-device system for applications that only require downlink communication from the server shortly after the end-device has sent an uplink transmission. Downlink communications from the server at any other time will have to wait until the next scheduled uplink. Bi-directional end-devices with scheduled receive slots (Class B): In addition to the Class A random receive windows, Class B devices open extra receive windows at scheduled times. In order for the End-device to open its receive window at the scheduled time it receives a time synchronized Beacon from the gateway. This allows the server to know when the end-device is listening. Bi-directional end-devices with maximal receive slots (Class C): End-devices of Class C have nearly continuously open receive windows, only closed when transmitting. Class C 9
LoRa is extremely energy efficient Due to limited time windows and data usage A LoRa device should work for up to 10 years on 1 AA battery The data provides insight on the battery status and the status of the connection 10
