MANUAL 2016
1 Introduction Welcome to deq6, a 6 band stereo/ms dynamic equalizer with high quality oversampling and accurate spectrum analyzer. deq6 controls the filter gain of each band by a compressor/expander. This reduces or increases the gain in a specific frequency range, depending on the program material. The detector signal for the compressor/expander is processed by a pre filter which is controlled by the centre frequency and Q-factor of the dynamic filter. This ensures that the compressor/expander is only activated by content in the specified frequency range. 2 Features deq6 offers following features: 6 independent filter + compressor/expander 3 filter types, analogue design, minimal phase, zero delay many comfort functions to setup multiple bands stereo/ms processing side chain support sample rates up to 192 khz "real" over sampling, up to 4x hi-res spectrum analyzer with 32k FFT, ISO R40 based pre/post-eq, average/live spectrum, stereo/left/right/mid/side narrow-band sweeping mode spectrum freeze mode very easy alignment of filter response curve to audio spectrum precise parameter input large and easy to use GUI interactive spectrum/eq display 64-bit internal processing very efficient CPU usage design (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 2 of 9
3 Overview The interface of deq6 is straightforward and easy to use. In the middle, you find the main EQ/spectrum display which lets you monitor the incoming and outgoing spectrum and adjust the filter response curve. On the bottom, you find all control of the 6 filter (e.g. type, threshold, attack/release times). On the right side, the controls for the analyzer modes are placed (e.g. enable display of incoming/outgoing spectrum or spectrum freeze). On the left side, there are the controls for the analyzer settings (e.g. frequency/magnitude range). The top area offers various plugin settings like oversampling (1x,2x or 4x), channel mode (stereo or mid-side), main analyzer mode (all channels, left/mid or right/side) and A/B button. Interactive EQ display The display shows the spectrum curve of the incoming (green) and outgoing (blue) signal. It is controlled by the analyzer modes and settings. The static minimum/maximum filter response is displayed as a light yellow band, the current filter response as red curve. The light grey curve shows the pre filter response of the compressor. Each filter band has its own handle (white), which can be moved and tweaked by mouse. Filter parameter deq6 consists of 6 stereo dynamic filter in series. Each filter can be configured individually by setting type, stereo placement (all, left/mid and right/side), frequency, gain, q-factor, threshold, ratio, attack, release time and gain reduction range. (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 3 of 9
deq6 offers 3 analogue modelled filter. The filter quality can be increased by using oversampling. This ensures " analogue" filter magnitude/phase response near Nyquist frequency. Comfort functions Many filter parameter can be controlled together e.g. filter gain, threshold or range. Some parameter can be set depending on program material or frequency range e.g. threshold, attack or release. This functions helps in setting up quickly and easily complex jobs. Plugin modes deq6 offers high-quality oversampling (up to 4x). Oversampling is used to correct magnitude/phase distortions near Nyquist frequency. The plugin can run in "normal" stereo mode or in Mid-Side mode. Mid-Side mode is used for e.g. stereo/mono split for EDM/Dance productions. 4 Minimum System Requirements Windows XP or newer Mac OS X 10.5 or newer Win: 32/64 Bit VST, 32/64 Bit VST3, 32 Bit RTAS, 32/64 Bit AAX OS X: 32/64 Bit VST, 32/64 Bit VST3, 32/64 Bit AU, 32 Bit RTAS, 32/64 Bit AAX Tested with: Cockos Reaper, Steinberg Cubase/Nuendo/Wavelab 6/7/8, FL Studio 12.x, ProTools 10/12 All sample rates 5 Plugin Controls 5.1 Plugin modes Oversampling Incoming signal could be oversampled up to 4 times. Oversampling reduces magnitude/phase distortions near Nyquist frequency and let the filter sound much more "analog". Please to note that the spectrum display is reset after oversampling mode change Channel Mode Left/Right: "normal" stereo processing. Each filter either works on both stereo channels or on an individual channel (left or right). Mid/Side: Enables Mid-Side processing. Each filter either works on both channels or on an individual channel (mid or side) Side-Chain Int: Normal processing mode Ext: Side-chain signal is used a input for the compressor Analyzer This control selects the main analyzer mode: All: In Channel Mode "Left/Right" interactive EQ display shows combined left/right spectrum. Left/Mid: Only left or mid spectrum is shown, depending on plugin channel mode. Right/Side: Only right or side spectrum is shown, depending on plugin channel mode. (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 4 of 9
5.2 Analyzer Modes deq6 measures signal's spectrum constantly. You can switch the display of different spectra on and off. Spectrum measurement costs CPU resources. You can "bypass" spectrum measurement by switching "Freeze" to on. The current spectrum data is still displayed Pre Average Shows averaged spectrum of incoming signal Pre Live Shows live spectrum of incoming signal Post Average Shows averaged spectrum of outgoing signal Post Live Shows live spectrum of outgoing signal Grid On/Off Toggles grid display Pre-filter curves On/Off Toggles display of pre-filter curves Freeze Freeze current spectrum measurement Reset Resets spectrum and dynamic EQ measurement. Same as shift mouse click into interactive EQ display A/B Passes the incoming signal directly to the output. 5.3 Analyzer Settings Frequency Scale Increases/decreases frequency range of the EQ/spectrum display, 100% means full range (10Hz to 22kHz) Frequency Offset Moves frequency range of the EQ/spectrum display from lower to higher frequencies, 100% means 22kHz on the right side of display Magnitude Scale Increases/decreases magnitude range of the EQ/spectrum display, 100% means full range (- 144dB to 48dB) (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 5 of 9
5.3.4 Magnitude Offset Moves magnitude range of the EQ/spectrum display from lower to higher db values, 100% means 48dB on the top side of display Magnitude Slope Slope tilts the graph of the frequency spectrum around 1kHz with the given slope in db. Values from 3dB to 4.5dB give a more "natural" balance between low and high frequencies, mapping the human hearing Filter Offset Sets the base line of the filter curve towards the spectrum curve. 5.4 Dynamic Equalizer Parameter Off/Static/Dynamic Sets filter band to inactive, static (filter only), dynamic (filter plus compressor) (S)olo Solos the band, band needs to be active (static or dynamic) (E)xternal Side-Chain Filter uses external/side-chain signal as input for the compressor. Please note that Side-Chain mode needs to set to "ext" Type Selects the filter type of the band: LowShelf: to boost or attenuate low frequencies Peak EQ: traditional peak filter HighShelf: to boost or attenuate high frequencies Channel All: The filter band affects all channels Left/Mid: depending on plugin channel mode either left or mid channel is processed Right/Side: depending on plugin channel mode either right or side channel is processed Please to note that one half of the filter handle is coloured depending on the filter band channel mode: right/blue, left/red, mid/yellow, side/green. White handle indicates that all channels are processed Frequency Sets the frequency of the filter band from 10Hz to 22kHz in 1Hz steps Q-Factor Set the bandwidth of the filter band, widening or narrowing in 0.1 steps Gain Sets the filter gain (if applicable) from -48dB to 48dB in 0.1dB steps (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 6 of 9
5.4.9 Threshold Level in dbfs where compressor starts to work in 0.1dB steps Ratio Controls the compression ratio above threshold from in 0.1 steps Values above 1.0 compress the signal, values below expand the signal Attack Calibrated in ms, adjusts attack time of the compressor from ms in 0.1ms steps Release Calibrated in ms, adjusts release time of the compressor from ms in 0.1ms steps Range Calibrated in db, adjusts maximum gain reduction of the compressor from db in 0.1dB steps Global This set of buttons modify all parameter in a row, if filter is active (e.g. all Q-factor values of all active filter). E.g. In order to initialize deq6 at the beginning, load the initial program, set all filter to "dynamic", let the audio run, click "set threshold" button (which sets all active threshold values to max peak value) and decrease threshold level further until red filter curve starts to moving and/or GR meters start to glow red. Off/Static/Dynamic: toggles all static bands to dynamic and visa versa, shift mouse toggles all disabled bands to dynamic and visa versa. Freq: increase/decrease dynamic filter centre frequency (mouse click and drag up/down, mouse wheel) Q: increase/decrease dynamic filter steepness Gain: increase/decrease dynamic filter gain (static) Threshold: increase/decrease dynamic filter threshold level, set threshold to max peak level (mouse click) Ratio: increase/decrease dynamic filter ratio Attack: increase/decrease dynamic filter attack time, set attack depending on dynamic filter frequency Release: increase/decrease dynamic filter release time, set attack depending on dynamic filter frequency Gain: increase/decrease dynamic filter gain range Peak Meter Displays current peak value in the range of -60 dbfs and +12 dbfs. The small gray line indicates max peak value, the small yellow line the current threshold value which can be changed by mouse click and drag, or mouse wheel. Below the LED meter the numerical value of the maximum peak value is display. It is reset by mouse click. (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 7 of 9
GR Meter Displays current gain reduction value in the range of -60 db and +12 db. The small gray line indicates max gain reduction value. Below the LED meter the numerical value of the maximum gain reduction value is display. It is reset by mouse click. 5.5 Interactive EQ/spectrum display The interactive display combines EQ curve and frequency spectrum in one display. The left scale shows the spectrum magnitude in db, the right scale the filter magnitude. You can match both magnitude curves by using the parameter "Filter Offset", overlaying EQ curve and frequency spectrum. The mouse can be used to either change the frequency/magnitude range of the spectrum/filter curve or to modify the filter curve directly Spectrum Mouse click into the display area and drag changes frequency/magnitude offset, so it moves the display pane around. Please note that frequency/magnitude scale needs to be less than 100%. Mouse wheel (over the display pane) changes magnitude scale, shift or alt key plus mouse wheel changes frequency scale Filter curve The filter response of the left/mid channel is displayed as light yellow curve, the filter response of the right/side channel is displayed as dark yellow curve. Shift mouse click the filter band handle (the number surrounded by a small circle) activates/deactivates the filter band. Mouse click and drag changes frequency and gain (if available) of the filter band. Mouse wheel (over the filter band handle) changes q-factor (if available). Mouse click and shift drag changes only the gain (if available) of the filter band. Mouse click and control drag changes only the frequency of the filter band Cursor display The display on the top right side shows frequency, piano key, spectrum magnitude value and filter curve magnitude value under the cursor Narrow-band Sweeping Mode Enabled by holding the "Ctrl" ("Command" on Mac OS X). Please note that also the gain of the narrow-band is affected by the cursor position. The narrow-band filter gain is determined by the scale on the right side (filter magnitude). 6 Demo mode versus Registered mode In demo mode (without registering) the plugin mutes audio every 90 seconds for a short period. This could be circumvented by clicking on the "deq6" logo within 90 seconds. You can register at (C) TBProaudio 2016 Page 8 of 9
