1 Product Information Radio Frequency Pulse Power Amplifier General Features When we designed our pulse power amplifier series we had in mind the requirements of spectroscopic analysis, for instance Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR/MRI) Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (ESR/EPR) Electron Nuclear Double Resonance (EN- DOR) and similar applications. We have striven to achieve excellent linearity, plus phase and amplitude stability. Additional emphasis we put on the RF fall time as this is a critical parameter for many applications. We apply state of the art LDMOS transistor amplifier stages. This way the amplifiers are robust to cope with mismatch conditions. Please refer to the data sheet of the respective amplifier for exact data. Some of the data are altered by available options which are described in the next section. 4 4 barthel HF Technik: RFPA General Features Energy Control In its standard version the pulse power amplifier controls the maximum pulse power, the maximum pulse length, and the maximum duty cycle. If either parameter exceeds its limit the amplifier protects itself and turns off the RF amplification. With the option Energy Control the parameters output power and duty cycle are connected to each other. The maximum RF pulse power is still controlled. In case it exceeds its maximum limit it will cause an error. The pulse length is not any longer controlled separately. With a reduced output power even CW operation is possible. The duty cycle and the RF output power are combined to an energy control. The smaller the output power the higher the duty cycle may be. Short Pulse Detect In its standard version the pulse power amplifier can detect, measure, and display the RF power of pulses that have a length of at least 50 µsec. With the option Short Pulse Detect the minimum detectable pulse length is reduced to 2 µsec. Fast Pregate A typical value for the blanking delay is 5 µsec for an amplifier in its standard version. Although this value depends greatly on the amplifier s bandwidth. Now, with the option Fast Pregate the blanking delay is reduced to approximately 1 µsec only. Long Pulse With the option Long Pulse the maximum pulse length is increased from 10 µsec to 100 µsec.
5 barthel HF Technik: RFPA General Features 5 Platform Pix The Platform Pix houses amplifiers with an output power of up to 100 Watts for broadband and up to 250 Watts for narrowband amplifiers. Platform Piii The Platform Piii houses amplifiers with an output power of up to 1 kw for broadband and up to 2 kw for narrowband amplifiers. 6 6 barthel HF Technik: RFPA General Features Multi Channel The Multi Channel Platform consists of up to four power amplifier modules plus one master module. Each module houses in a Platform Piii cabinet. The master module contains RF splitters and combiners. It allows to either use the power amplifier module s as separate channels or to combine them to a single output. The master module acts as master to the power amplifier modules which act as slaves in the system. All modules communicate via a link line. Via the master module the amplifier can be controlled remotely. Water Cooling All above mentioned platforms are air cooled. Currently, we are working on a water cooled platform for higher RF powers in a compact cabinet.
