The IST impulse sparktester type consists of a common electronic unit which is available as compact unit or as a 19 in. rack, and of various electrodes with or without box, depending on the application. Chain electrodes are the most common type of testing electrodes. They provide well defined voltage distributions and apply the test voltage directly to the outer layer of the cable and conductor. Tube electrodes are used when contact between wire and electrode is to be avoided. The electronic unit contains the high voltage control as well as all monitoring, alarm and control elements. A generator produces an impulse frequency of 250 Hz (standard adjustment). A high voltage coil generates negative needle pulses of defined wave shape (according to standard specifications). The peak voltage can be continuously adjusted and is displayed on a calibrated instrument. A sensitive filter circuit detects sparks which are caused by insulation faults. These fault pulses are filtered out by the electronics and transmitted to the counter. The impulse sparktester IST can be used universally in extrusion lines, rewind lines, coil winding machines, in testing stations, etc. The unit detects insulation faults such as pinholes, very thin insulation or bare patches. All insulating materials for cables can be tested. Compact unit 19 in. -electronic unit
