General tes The best first step is to read *22 and *25 to see what is enabled. If these are wrong, this is probably the problem. Next verify the dip-switches and wiring connections. See below for more detailed information. Also, don t overlook the basics: check the panel AC, battery, etc If anything at all goes wrong with the panel the Check 09 may be the symptom. This is because the expansion modules are supervised and other devices are not. For example, a problem with a keypad could cause a problem on the ECP data bus. Because the keypad is not supervised, no trouble condition is associated with this. However, the ECP problem could cause a communication problem to the expanders and therefore result in a Check 09. Using Wireless devices Verify the dip-switches on the RF expander. Switches should be set with switch all OFF (address 00). Toggle the dip-switches (off, then back on) this will ensure that they are seated properly. There is no cover tamper on the 4281 or 5881 receiver. Verify the model number of the RF receiver Verify that *22 = 1 if Using a 5881 Verify that *22 = 4 if Using a 5881 with RF jam detection enabled. (only applies to panels that have the rf jam feature) Verify that *25 = 0 (If there is not a 4219/4229/4204 in use) Verify wiring to the RF receiver from the control panel. The plug-in harness should be wired as follows: Panel Terminal Receiver wire 4 Black wire 5 Red wire 6 Green wire 7 Yellow wire To verify the integrity of the wire harness, try to operate a keypad from the same harness; or replace the harness. It is important that the data wires for the receiver not t-tap to go to other devices. The receiver should have its own home-run wire to the control panel. Refer to Wire run limitations for the expanders Remove all other ECP devices and wires except a keypad and the RF receiver to isolate the system. Check voltages on the data wires. With reference to black, you should read: Red = 13.5VDC Yellow = VDC (fluctuating) Green = a few millivolts with some fluctuation If these are not correct, see if the voltages are correct at the panel, and troubleshoot the wiring. Move the receiver to the control panel and retest. 1
Using a hardwire expander (4219/429/4204 relay module) te: only one of these devices may be used. Verify the dip-switches on the device. Switches should be set with switch 2 OFF, 3/4/5 ON (address 01). 4204: Dip 1=tamper (Enabled = off (left)) 4219/4229: Dip1 = zone response time for zone 10. This will not affect a Check 09 condition. Toggle the dip-switches (off, then back on) this will ensure that they are seated properly. If using the cover tamper, make sure the magnet is installed in the cover and the cover is secure. It may be helpful to disable the tamper until the problem is corrected, to minimize possible causes of this trouble. The tamper on the 4219/4229 may be enabled/disabled by a jumper in the corner of the PCB at the end of the zone terminals opposite from the ECP connections. te: The tamper on the 4219/4229 is disabled when the jumper is away from the edge of the PCB.The tamper on the 4204 may be disabled by turning switch 1 ON Verify that *22 = 0 (if wireless is not used) Verify that *25 = 1 If using a 4219 zone expander Verify that *25 = 2 If using a 4229 zone expander with relays Verify that *25 = 3 If using a 4204 relay module Verify wiring to the expander from the control panel. te: If using the plug-in harness ensures that yellow is close to the edge of the expander PCB. The wiring should be as follows: Panel Terminal Expander Terminal/wire color 4 15 (or Black wire) 5 13 (or Red wire) 6 14 (or Green wire) 7 16 (or Yellow wire) It is important that the data wires for the expander not loop through it or t-tap to go to other devices. Each expander should have its own home-run wire to the control panel. Refer to Wire run limitations for the expanders Check voltages on the data wires. With reference to black, you should read: Red = 13.5VDC Yellow = VDC (fluctuating) Green = a few millivolts with some fluctuation te:if these are not correct, see if the voltages are correct at the panel, and troubleshoot the wiring. Move the expander to the control panel and retest. Remove all other ECP devices and wires except a keypad and the expander to isolate the system. 2
Try setting *25=0 as a test to verify that check 09 does clear. Assuming that it does, set *25 back again. Using Both Wireless and an expansion module The toughest part of this combination is figuring out which device has the problem. Check the dip-switches and wiring as indicated in the sections above and test voltages as indicated. Check *22 and *25 to ensure they are correct. Try to determine if either module is working or not working: Do the wireless zones work? Do the relays work? te: If this has not cleared the problem, try isolating the system by removing one device (physically and from programming). If you disable the RF receiver by setting *22=0, you will loose all of your serial numbers. Therefore, it is less painful to start by removing the expander and setting *25=0 first to see if that clears the trouble. Using neither wireless or 4204 relay module Verify that *22 = 0 Verify that *25 = 0 (unless there is an Alarmnet in 4204 emulation mode) Using an Alarmnet radio backup in 4204-emulation mode Using an Alarmnet radio backup in 4204-emulation mode In this application, the Alarmnet acts exactly like a 4204 to the control panel. A Check 09 can be caused by a communication failure between the radio and the control panel. A Check 09 can be caused by some other problem with the Alarmnet such as: Power (AC/battery), temper, communication error to Alarmnet Using an RF keypad (6128RF/6150RF) If using a 6128RF or 6150RF for key-fobs in the local mode only, you must: - Set *22 = 0(because you have chosen to use the keypad receiver) - Set the RF keypad for its local mode in its internal programming. - Refer to the installation instructions for the keypad for more information. te: If you are using the RF keypad in both the system and local modes, and you enter the local program mode of the keypad, the keypads receiver is no longer talking to the control panel. This will generate a Check 09 condition that can be cleared by keying a code + off twice. 3
Wire run limitations for the expanders The following limits have been calculated based on the current draw of these devices: AWG 4204 using 4204 using 4204 using 4204 using relay 2 relays 3 relays 4 relays (using relays) 22 AWG AWG AWG AWG te: The sum of all wires on the ECP (keypad) bus cannot exceed 1500 (750 if using shielded wire or metallic conduit) due to capacitive effects. The above limitations are based on the power for the device. If using a power supply located close to the device, the data wires to the control panel may be up to 1500 regardless of the wire size. In this case, remember that you must have a common ground to the control panel. RF Jamming explanation If something jams the RF receiver with a continuous signal it can interfere with the receiver s ability to receive signals from the transmitters. If this continues for a 12- hour period, and the control panel has not received signals from any transmitters, the system will assume there is a problem with the receiver and report a Check 09. In this case, all supervised transmitters will also be in Check. This is usually indicated by the red LED on the receiver flickering or glowing continuously. The newest 5881 receivers (PCB marked 5882) have the ability to detect an RF jamming condition. This feature can be detected in the control panel (revision 13 and higher) by setting *22=4. The control panel would report a Check 90 condition if a jamming condition lasts for more than 20 seconds. Check 09 that comes and goes (intermittent) This can be difficult to troubleshoot because it is probably OK right now. The following questions may give you the answers you need to isolate the problem when applied to the information given previously. If using wireless are any RF zones in trouble? Are they supervised? Do the wireless zones work? Test wiring/look at total ECP configuration. Look on Next Page for a Troubleshooting flow Chart! 4
Check 09 Using Wireless or 4219/4229/4204? Do the Zones/Relays work? Field 22=? Field 25=? If not 0 they need to be made /5882/ /4229/4204 Check your 4219/4229 if using one! Check the Address!
