OISE MEASUREMETS AREAS Generally In order to measure the acoustic environment at critical areas of the project Construction of new motorway section Demir Kapija Smokvica as part of the Pan-European Corridor X, a noise monitoring and measuring program was implemented during the phase before construction s period. The noise monitoring program was implemented as part of AKTOR S company obligations, as required from project s contract Construction of new motorway section Demir Kapija Smokvica as part of the Pan-European Corridor X and from the Environmental Impact Assessment Study - Update (July 2009). Aim of program s application and of the acoustic environment - noise measurements, before the implementation of the Project Motorway, is the submission of the elements to the Independent Engineer - Environmental Agency - Supervision. Furthermore, aim of the noise measurements is to create a data base of the zero level acoustic background and some possible use of the results to the countermeasures planning against noise in case of fauna s birds nuisance and local population. Within this context, measurements and recordings of the acoustic environment were completed at the points that are presented in the following Table. TABLE 1: oise measurements points ΑΑ AREA 1 Demir Kapija Canyon 2 Demir Kapija Gorge 3 Miravci 4 Smokvica 5 Miletkovo 6 South Portal of Tunnel 1 oise measurements were done on the axis of the existing motorway inside Demir Kapija Canyon, in the area of South Portal of Tunnel T1 and inside Demir Kapija Gorge which is the protection area for vultures. oise s were made also in residential areas neighboring the project as Miravci, Smokvica and Miletkovo. The measurements for the recordings of the acoustic environment were completed during the period from to , a period when the breeding season begins. During the acoustic environment measurements, no construction activities were being performed, but the traffic circulation at the existing road was flowing normally. Repetition of measurements was executed in order to cover different weather conditions. The program was implemented according to the ational and the International Legislation, as well as relevant standards regarding noise-acoustic environment: 3

When there are distinct events to the noise such as with aircraft or railway noise, measures of the individual events should be obtained (using, for example, LAmax), in addition to LAeq,T measurements. The necessary definitions for the noise measurements are the following: L Aeq (Equivalent Continuous A-weighted Sound Pressure Level): The value of the A- weighted sound pressure level of a continuous, steady sound that, within a specified time interval T, has the same mean square sound pressure as a sound under consideration whose level varies over time. L Amax (maximum sound level): The highest value of the A-weighted sound pressure level that occurs during a given event or time period. The time weighting should be specified. L Amax (minimum sound level): The lowest value of the A-weighted sound pressure level that occurs during a given event or time period. The time weighting should be specified. T (time period in seconds or minutes): A specified time interval equal to the noise measurement duration. SPL (Sound pressure level or sound level) is a logarithmic measure of the effective sound pressure of a sound relative to a reference value. It is measured in decibels (db) above a standard reference level. The commonly used "zero" reference sound pressure in air or other gases is 20 μpa RMS, which is usually considered the threshold of human hearing (at 1 khz). A-weighting is the most commonly used of a family of curves defined in the International standard IEC 61672:2003 and various national standards relating to the measurement of sound pressure level. A-weighting is applied to instrument-measured sound levels in effort to account for the relative loudness perceived by the human ear, as the ear is less sensitive to low audio frequencies. 4

5 OISE MEASUREMETS AD RECORD OF THE ZERO LEVEL The data and the indicators mentioned above for the 6 selected points of noise measurements are presented in detail and are commented below. oise record, in 5-minutes base, was performed by mobile noise equipment, equipped with noise-meter, all-weather microphone and are being presented on the Table 2 of the present report. During noise recording the noise meter CASTLE PRO-DX Vocis of Castle Group Ltd Company was mainly used. Before the acoustic measurement, the calibration of the equipment took place with specific calibration device (acoustical calibrator) type GA607 designed by the same company, in order to succeed the reliability of results during the recording period of the acoustic environment. For completed noise measurements, local data conditions were recorded as well, data that are useful for the evaluation of the results. The recorded data also include data for device s calibrations, measurements manager, weather conditions, photographic record of the area Google earth and points of sound measurements and other specific descriptions of conditions. Each measurement of has a duration of 5 or 10 minutes. The sound measurements that took place, fully cover the area of Demir Kapija Gorge and Demir Kapija Canyon, while a complete file with all primary data of noise sound measurements is being kept. s have been made by the environmental expert Michalis Karasoulas and worksite s Environmental Manager Periklis Andris, by the presence of environmental expert of Engineer Mr Aldo Contellacci and AKTOR s Sustainable Development Manager Dr.-Ing. iki Siouta. 2. OISE MEASURMET FORMS In this chapter the results are presented in specific forms, as previously mentioned. The general data of each measurement are presented inside the form i.e. location, photograph of the area building, measurement manager, weather conditions etc. as well as the recorded-treated with the use of software, noise data of Leq (5 min) and the variance chart with the allowable noise limits. Comments and conclusions of the noise monitoring program are mentioned in chapter 3 that follows. All the forms constitute Appendix I. 5
