1 Acterna DSL-311 and DSL-322 DSL Copper Testers The increased demand for ISDN, highspeed data, and full-motion video puts extreme pressure on copper-based access networks designed for POTS. In fact, more than 60 percent of the problems that occur with broadband access services are caused by the lines poor physical parameters, disturbers, or bad environmental conditions. That's why, before adding new high-bandwidth services to access networks, it is necessary to first qualify that the lines are suitable for xdsl services. The Acterna DSL-311 and DSL-322 DSL Copper Testers are used to quickly and accurately determine the characteristics of subscriber access lines as well as analyze line problems in detail. Predefined instrument settings and limit values speed up testing and prevent incorrect settings, while measurement results are immediate and compared automatically with the limit masks to indicate whether the line can support the desired services. In addition, the testers' Auto Test feature enables users to run a complete set of measurements with a single key press. Built-in automatic communications means that the DSL-311 and DSL-322 can be combined in any way the user likes. Either two DSL-311s, two DSL-322s, or one DSL-311 and one DSL-322 can be used at each end of the line to perform tests. Additional control circuits are not needed. Interoperability enables full remote control of the far end instrument so that only one operator is needed, and it enables measurement results as well as control commands to be exchanged between the two testers. The templates, measurement modes, and results displays are always determined by the unit that triggers the measurement. In addition to end-to-end testing, one tester can be used to perform singleended testing. Designed for single-operator testing and analysis, these simple-to-use, economical tools expedite installation, qualification, and troubleshooting; decrease problems; improve service; reduce customer turnover; and lower labor costs. 2 Operating separately or together, the DSL-311 and DSL-322 testers measure all major line parameters and interference. The instrument settings and limit values specified for many services are predefined in templates. One or more templates can be collected into a template set depending on the instrument or purpose of the measurement. The DSL-311 template sets can contain only one template while the DSL-322 template sets can contain up to ten templates. Single Test mode is used for fault analysis and long-term tests. Each measurement defined in one of up to ten templates is individually selected and performed. The results are available on the display and can be stored. When performing long-term measurements such as impulsive noise, the test duration can be set between 1 minute and 100 hours. Auto Test mode quickly (<1 minute) and easily qualifies the line during installation. The testers can store up to ten templates. After selecting the desired template, the entire test sequence is automatically executed, giving a pass/fail indication for each test as well as for the complete test sequence. Using the Configuration and Transfer Software, these templates can be expanded or altered according to specific testing requirements. Single-end testing with the DSL-322 When performing single-end line tests with the DSL-322, the tester performs the following functions (figure 1a): Impulse noise Wideband noise Return loss Impedance Interference spectrum analysis TDR indicator detects location of impedance mismatches Line balance test (LCL) with optional SDZ-30 bridge DCloop resistance Measurement of longitudinal conversion loss (LCL) as defined in ITU-T Rec. O.9 is possible with only one DSL-311 or DSL-322 using the NEXT measurement and an external signal balance bridge SDZ-30 (figure 2, next page). When two lines are connected to the tester, NEXT and the location of coupling between pairs with XTDR are added (figure 1b). End-to-end testing with two DSL-322s To qualify lines for dedicated services like ISDN, HDSL, or ADSL, end-to-end line testing with two DSL-322s is required. 3 Pass Pass Deviation / db Fail.5k.2k.1k k.2k.5k Fail Deviation / Ohm Applications Test and qualify lines for xdsl, ISDN, and POTS up to 2 MHz Perform troubleshooting and fault location on copper access lines Measure transmission parameters of balanced lines Analyze interferer problems Line qualification When qualifying a line for ADSL, ISDN, or HDSL, the DSL tester measures the frequency range, impedance, weighting filters, and transmit signal level and automatically compares the results to the requirements of the service. The results provide critical information that determines if the line can support the service. For example, because higher noise reduces the signal-to-noise ratio, its presence limits the data rate or the maximum acceptable line length. The DSLtesters' ability to measure impulse and wideband noise not only at a single end of the line, but at both ends at the same time, is a key advantage because the noise level difference of both locations is often very high. When operating in Auto Test mode, the DSLtesters can qualify a line in less than one minute. Troubleshooting In addition to line qualification, the DSL testers are the only units needed for troubleshooting. Their comprehensive test functions detect problems that degrade service quality, which enables users to correct problems before they affect customers. When performing fault analysis or long-term measurements, test duration can be set between 1 minute and 100 hours. In addition to pass/fail results, the testers display detailed results as a bar graph or in a numerical list, and each result, such as frequency and the corresponding loss value, can be recalled separately. Pair detection and TDR/XTDR fault location The testers' built-in time-domain reflectometer (TDR) allows the user to rapidly locate loading coils and bridged taps and detect impedance mismatches, which are critical to ensuring uninterrupted delivery of high-speed services. Users normally need a lot of experience to handle TDR instruments. However, the testers' numerical display showing the distance to the point of reflection simplifies fault location. When a wire pair in a cable bundle is detected, a signal is fed into the tester at one end and received by the tester at the other end of the line, causing a signal tone to be generated. Configuration and transfer software The Configuration and Transfer Software, included with the DSL testers, runs under Microsoft Windows and performs the following tasks: Edits limit values for measurements and instrument settings or permits selection of pre-defined values. Determines the measurement to be performed in Auto Test and Single Test modes. Transfers the instrument configuration (templates with limit values and instrument settings) from the PC to the test set. Transfers results saved by the DSL-322 from the test set to the PC (results upload) and displays it in numerical and graphical format. the up to 30 measurement points set individually.

4 With the Configuration and Transfer Software, users can select and download predefined templates that match specific service requirements. Pressing the parameter key opens a dialog window where configuration parameters can be edited, individual measurement functions activated or deactivated, and frequency and limit values for each of the up to 30 measurement points set individually. The tester performs all the activated functions, ignoring those that were deactivated, and gives a pass/fail indication for each test as well as for the complete test sequence(figures3and4). The templates can be expanded to match the requirements of future services, and import and export functions facilitate the exchange of template files to provide support for modern test equipment management programs. When using the DSL-322, the Configuration and Transfer Software enables users to upload the results to a PC. After uploading, every result displayed in a list can be selected and the complete contents displayed. Remote control software option The remote control software option fully supports the Configuration and Transfer Software, enabling all the functions of manually operated DSL-311 and DSL-322 testers, including definition of templates, to be used in an automated or remote controlled environment.
