1 No. 253 December 2012 CORPORATENews Message from the New President My name is Masanobu Machida, and I ll be serving as president of HIOKI starting next year (effective January 1, 2013). First of all, I d like to express my deep gratitude to you, our distributors, for all of your hard work selling HIOKI products, and I d like to ask for your continued cooperation as we work to further strengthen our relationship so that we can bring those products to even more customers around the world. Looking back on 2012, HIOKI s business performance was affected to no small extent as sluggishness in the global economy drove a slowdown in production investment, particularly in the electronic component industry. At the same time, energy issues have attracted widespread interest worldwide, and they will continue to do so in the future. Companies are competing to fulfill a range of research and development priorities, including boosting the Masanobu Machida efficiency with which electricity can be generated using natural energy sources, developing associated infrastructure, improving the performance of batteries used to store power, and increasing inverters conversion efficiency. I feel the benefits of these efforts will prove to be a major driver of growth not only in the power industry, but also in sectors such as the automotive and appliance industries. Against this backdrop, the number of opportunities for customers to use HIOKI products is increasing, albeit at a gradual pace. Going forward, HIOKI will treat the energy field as one of its key target markets. Measuring instruments are truly mother tools that play an essential role in the development of industry, and, above all else, they are called upon to deliver a high degree of precision and reliability. As we continue to move forward, HIOKI must not only dedicate resources to improving measurement precision and reliability, but also pursue a range of activities to develop its global brand as a company distinguished by exceptional technology. It will be critical to refine proprietary technologies such as our clamp sensors while proposing new products that have the potential to make a significant contribution to our customers research and development programs. At the same time, we will look to tailor our product planning and sales support activities so that they better meet the needs to customers from all countries and regions by pursuing closer and more active sharing of information with all those involved in selling HIOKI products worldwide. 2 NewPRODUCTS PW Clamp On Power Logger A New Power Logger and Power Meter In a Single Device Energy conservation is an important issue around the world, as is reflected by ISO and changes in laws related to energy conservation in countries worldwide. As such, there will always be a great need for electrical equipment maintenance and energy-saving measurement capabilities in testing devices. In continuing to offer advanced instruments to assist in this category, HIOKI has developed the Clamp On Power Logger PW , scheduled to launch in February The PW3360 supports energysaving measurement around the world by delivering CAT III (600 V) capability in a compact package that is just 43% of the size of the older 3169 by volume, and provides the following features: 1. Extensive measurement capability in a compact package Despite its compact size, the PW can measure power variations over extended periods of time. Used with a genuine Hioki SD card, it can record up to one year of measurements at oneminute intervals. This feature is perfect for use in applications involving the verification of energysaving results. The PW s compact size allows it to be installed in confined spaces inside electrical panels, and its broad operating temperature range of -10 C to 50 C, which exceeds that of previous devices (0 C to 40 C), aids measurement in harsh environments. The instrument can measure targets ranging from single-phase lines to three-phase/four-wire, 400V lines, and it can be powered by an optional battery or power supply adapter in locations where no AC power supply is available. 2. QUICK SET navigator, a feature designed to help prevent measurement mistakes To measure power at a high level of reliability, it is necessary to configure settings properly and to make the proper connections for voltage and current measurement. The PW s QUICK SET function provides instructions for configuring settings, connecting the instrument, checking the connections, and starting recording, all in a series of easyto-understand steps. In this way, the instrument eliminates mistaken settings and connections and offers robust support Mr. Sadanori Miyajima (far left) and his development team for reliable measurement. The ability to display color-coded three-phase connection and vector diagrams on its color display makes it easy to visualize the measurement circuit at a glance. 3. Leak current measurement and pulse input for expanded capability Used with an optional clamp leak sensor, the PW can be used to measure leak current. If a clamp leak sensor is used in combination with a power measurement clamp sensor, the instrument can record power while checking for electricity leaks. In energy-saving programs at manufacturing plants, power consumption per unit of production (per product) is managed based on production volume and power data; the PW accepts pulse input for tracking production volume count information, allowing it to simultaneously record power data and pulse count information. page 2

In production processes for these components, it is necessary to measure DC resistance, and HIOKI has developed a pair of new products to meet this need in different applications. These instruments, which are scheduled to be launched in January 2013, offer the following features: 1. DC resistance measurement designed for specific applications The RM3544 and RM3548 deliver DC resistance measurement capability for different applications. The RM3544, which is designed primarily for use on production lines, is available in two types: an embeddable model for use on automated lines (RM : RS-232C or USB) and another variant designed RM3548 for use on manual lines where workers make measurements directly by hand (RM 3544: measurement capability only with no data interface). On the other hand, the RM3548 features a portable design to facilitate applications not only in the production, maintenance, and inspection of large coils, motors, and transformers, but also in jobs such as the testing of electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and aircraft. 2. High-accuracy measurement with enhanced noise resistance (RM3544) The RM3544 uses a measurement current of up to 300 ma and features a measurement unit with guarded terminals, decreasing the effects of noise on measured values. Additionally, the instrument is capable of highaccuracy measurement with a measurement accuracy of up to 0.02%. 5 Message from the Developer - RM3544 & RM3548 Resistance Meters The Resistance Tester RM3544/RM3548 is the successor to the HIOKI adopted a two-model approach consisting of the bench-type RM3544, which can be used anywhere at a higher level of accuracy, and the portable RM3548. The bench-type RM3544 is designed to be a simple resistance tester suitable for use on either manual or automated production lines. We are delivering a basic accuracy of 0.02%, five display digits, and a measurement range of 30 mω to 3 MΩ--an order of magnitude better than the previous model--at the same price point as the The instrument is designed to measure the winding resistance of motors and transformers as well as the contact resistance of power relays, switches, and connectors. With features including a fast response of 20 ms, easy-to-see screen, loud buzzer, and measurement cables with improved flex resistance, the instrument is designed for maximum ease of use on production lines. The RM3548 is designed to be a high-precision, portable resistance tester capable of measuring resistance levels from microohms to megaohms. It is intended primarily for use in testing and maintenance of large equipment, for example measurement of winding resistance and weld resistance in large motors. Despite delivering a maximum measurement current of 1 A and a maximum resolution of 0.1 μω so that it can perform low-resistance measurement of large equipment, the RM3548 features a portable, easyto-use design. Since it offers the same basic accuracy as the RM3544, this single instrument can be used with targets ranging from small devices to large equipment. 7 FeatureAPPLICATIONNote FT6380 and FT6381 Clamp On Earth Tester These ground clamp application notes are being introduced for use in Japan. Before making suggestions to customers, please check local conditions carefully, as they may be unsuitable for different wiring methods and regulations, and measurement may not be possible. Earth Ground Resistance Measurement N-phase grounding of pole transformers employs multiple grounding electrodes. Ground resistance measurements are conducted once every four years. Where each pole transformer is individually grounded, this method cannot be used. In cases such as lightning rods, flammable substance storage tanks at chemical plants, steel high-voltage transmission towers, and transformer substations, multiple grounding electrodes are used. There are also cases where multiple grounding electrodes are unknowingly present when fixed stationary facilities are grounded. Steel Tower Ground Resistance Measurement Multiple grounding electrodes are installed as lighting rod grounds for steel towers. Measurements are used to manage ground resistance. For high-voltage power transmission, an underground grid is constructed. Chemical Plants At chemical plants, static electricity must be discharged by dissipation to earth through multiple grounding electrodes. For lightning protection, storage tanks containing flammable substances are provided with multiple grounding electrodes. Targets are plants that must comply with the High Pressure Gas Safety Act. Other applications include companies handling flammable substances and fine particulates that require equipotential bonding as an ignition countermeasure. page 7

8 ApplicationNOTES Model: RM3543 Customer: Manufacturer of fuses for power companies (quality control department) Application: Testing of solder on power fuses The customer uses low-resistance measurement to test for inadequate solder on high-current fuses. The company has chosen the RM3543, which can measure low levels of resistance at high precision and resolution with a large current (1A). Model: 3154 Customer: Automotive parts manufacturer (production engineering department) Application: Testing of antistatic processing of the fuel tank fill opening A conductive coating is used between the fuel tank fill opening and the line leading to the tank to provide conductivity, since static buildup on the opening could ignite highly flammable gasoline fumes. The customer has embedded the 3154 in a testing system on the production line that applies a high voltage and verifies that the resistance value is below a certain level. Model: 3390 Customer: Machine tool manufacturer (development department) Application: Evaluation of changes to a wire bonding machine to save electricity The customer uses the 3390 to measure transient power RMS values for a wire bonding machine as a way to evaluate energy-saving motors and drivers being used by the device. The company had been using a current probe and oscilloscope to check current variations, but the 3390 allows more accurate evaluation and analysis since it yields power data. Model: 3153 Customer: Phone company (equipment research and development department) Application: Evaluation of the performance of phone line connectors The customer measures the contact resistance, insulation resistance, and dielectric voltage of metal connectors to evaluate their performance. Since DC capability is needed for both insulation resistance and dielectric voltage testing, the company uses the Model: RM3548 Customer: Airline (maintenance and service department) Application: Testing fuselage sensors Airliners are equipped with a variety of sensors. The latest fuselages are made from carbon fiber, making it difficult to manage the welding of sensors. The customer uses a compact, lightweight 3540 thanks to its ability to measure low resistance levels at high resolution and precision. The company is also considering switching to the newly released RM3548 (which will be launched in the domestic Japanese market in December). Model: CT CT Customer: Automotive parts manufacturer (production engineering department) Application: Testing of automobile heater current The customer chose the CT9691 and CT6590 as sensors capable of measuring DC current at reasonable cost. They are able to use a 20-meter extension cable designed to allow the 3290 to make measurements onboard a vehicle and download the data to a remote computer. Data is measured with the 3237 via a BNC/banana clip conversion plug and then sent to the computer over the instrument s RS- 232C interface. Model: MR Customer: Automotive parts manufacturer (development department) Application: Evaluation of electronic circuits on ECU boards The customer uses the MR to record board logic signal and supply voltage waveforms and save the results as data for evaluating board operation to a computer. The company is also studying using the MR8740, which can measure multiple channels simultaneously, in order to apply this evaluation process to production lines, since that instrument would enable a large number of boards to be tested simultaneously. page 8

How big is the error? A: Different measurement values do not necessary mean that the 9770 is not appropriate for the testing. The basic premise of the 3554 Battery Tester is that it should be used to test batteries over time, so that the customer can observe the deterioration of the battery s resistance in order to assess the health of the battery during its entire life. However, the equipment used to test the battery should stay the same over the entire duration of the tests, including the test lead. If he uses the , but later on uses the 9770 on the same battery, he will get significantly different results because the test probes were different, each having different properties and level of contact with the battery terminals. It doesn t mean that the tests were invalid as individual tests, but just invalid when analyzed together. They are all connectible to Model 3554, although they are not listed as standard options. They are all high precision leads which may be a little more expensive, and are not listed as standard options for the 3554 because usually battery terminals are not that small and page 9

10 MessageFromHIOKI 1. Year 2012 I am writing this article at the end of November. Despite HIOKI s globalization policy, our sales will be ending at around 5.7 billion yen, including sales from subsidiaries. The total sale of HIOKI products and services including the Japanese market will be 15 billion yen, 14% less than our original target. The decrease is particularly attributed to a significant sales drop in Taiwan due to weakened demand from PCB customers. On the other hand, sales of product categories such as recorders, electronic measuring instruments, power meters and clamp sensors and testers have increased over last year. These are good signs given that we are still experiencing a recession. 2. Products As you know, HIOKI has been releasing competitive products recently such as the FT6380 series and the IR405X series. Both product series are expected to be a great hit because of their unique features. HIOKI is also releasing new DMMs, a new clamp on power meter Model PW3360 introduced in this issue of HIOKI FLASH, and enhanced our LCR meter line-up with Model IM3590 Chemical Impedance Analyzer. These instruments are designed for the global market so we are confident that they will greatly contribute to furthering our brand in existing markets and establishing the HIOKI name in new markets. 3. Sales Support HIOKI will be supplying more sales materials in order to support our distributors. As announced in the last issue, we designed roll screens both for exhibitions and electrical shops in your country. The screens can be also be temporarily displayed at local or private seminars to give your event a more professional look. We are also working on brochures in different languages, and some of you may have already been contacted for assistance. We will be proposing more plans and creating more marketing tools in order to support your activities. Many distributors are already signing up for the marketing collateral and extending their fullest cooperation to deliver them as quickly as possible. The use of these screens and other marketing collateral around the world will allow us to carry out a consistent look and image, and convey to the market that HIOKI is comprised of a strong international sales and support network. Organization The HIOKI International Department has been reinforcing our organization in order to provide more support to distributors as well as to visit more distributors and customers in your country. We may appoint a dedicated sales person to each region in an effort to build a closer relationship with each of you. Your support will be appreciated. 5. IT Over the next year, HIOKI will be upgrading our website. We plan to enhance it by adding new functions. One of the ideas already in the testing stages is to make product videos. The videos can also be created with subtitles in different languages if required. Another plan is to introduce a MyHIOKI function, which will allow our customers to personalize their browsing experience and provide them with added services. The details will be explained in a future issue of HIOKI Flash. Your ideas on how we can improve our website are most welcome. 6. Year 2013 HIOKI s sales target will be 16 billion yen in billion yen is slated for the international market, which is a 10% increase from our 2012 performance.
