3 Evaluation of Requirements Accommodation of at least one payload - Splat 3 plans to accommodate at least 2 payloads with the goal of as many as possible Consistently deploy the Payload with no extra momentum. - Team plans to deploy payload through a release mechanism or trap door and payload to experience free falling force. Deployment shall be operated from the ground. - The use of remote controls are planned to meet this requirement

4 Evaluation of Requirements Operated at varying heights between 10 & 400 feet - The use of an electric winch is planned to be used to fulfill this requirement Height control mechanism -The electric winch has remote control that can be used to vary height Interfaces shall be one fault tolerant -BDRS: Will be grounded by an additional paracord rope. -PADS: Payload deployment system will be attached to balloon in two separate ways.

5 Evaluation of Requirements Indicator present to display the failure between the Balloon and PADS The group plans to use a personal alarm that will sound when a pin is pulled Designed to not allow an early release of the payload Splat 3 will ensure that payloads are released only when intended by the signals of the controllers Personnel shall not be harmed in the event of a balloon failure It is the top priority of this group that this project, and all those associated with it remain safe throughout all phases.

6 Evaluation of Requirements Abide by the FAA tethered balloon regulations - Before each test, all required FAA regulations will be known and taken care of PADS shall not impact the ground with a velocity higher than 3 m/sec -The PADS will be equipped with a parachute to slow down the PADS in the case of an incident Balloon ascent and descent shall be automated - The BDRS will be automated through the use of an electric winch System shall be powered by no more than one standard power outlet - Electric winch uses 12 volt DC power, will need AC/DC converter to use with 120V AC power

7 Evaluation of Requirements SPLAT shall accommodate two GoPro cameras Accommodations of the PADS will include a GoPro camera as well as one on the ground The PADS shall have a minimum volume of a 10 ream box of paper The proposed PADS have a volume larger than this The PADS and the balloon tether shall have a maximum weight of 8 lbs This maximum weight has been a leading constraint for the purposed designs. Splat 3 will consider weight in every material used in this project. System shall be powered by no more than one standard power outlet Electric winch uses 12 volt DC power, will need AC/DC converter to use with 120V AC power

8 Evaluation of Requirements SPLAT shall be designed to be reused 20 times per day & 5 year lifespan with 5 daily uses per year Reliability and durability will be ensured in the final project. This will be accomplished through many test before the project is presented. Each SPLAT shall be designed to accommodate the following Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) Splat 3 will work within the guidelines with any equipment that is given.

9 Concern with Requirements The SPLAT shall cost no more than $500 To satisfy the previous requirements, Splat 3 believes that more money will be needed. Initial estimates for proposed designs have exceeded this budget. Projects like this are not common and ones that are purchasable are expensive. Since this is unprecedented, buying individual of the shelf products quickly exhausts the budget. The SPLAT shall be able to deploy to 400 feet ten times in one hour of use Depending on the assentation rate of the balloon, our estimate calculations show that the balloon can be deployed and retrieved 10 times in 64 minutes. This is by using a wench that retrieves the balloon from 400 feet in 6.15 minutes.

10 Concern with Requirements The height of the system shall be known to within one foot The height of the payload could be continuously changing due to wind speed and other factors. The group plans on using a measurement device that would measure the length of line out from the BDRS. This would give a close approximation for the height that should be accurate to the straight down distance within a few feet.

11 Programs of Study (6 th Grade) 6th Grade s main focus is understanding the relationships between simplistic equations and their variables. Analyze relationships between dependent and independent variables. Ex. Can show students the relation of the balloon s height as time expires. Height=constant*time (assuming ascent and descent is constant). Solve real-world problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Create math problem finding the surface area and volume of their egg deliverables (rectangular prism). Reason about and solve one-variable equations. Can explain and give example equations such as W=mg and others. Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Ex. If it takes the balloon x seconds to descend 80ft, how long will it take to descend 400ft (assuming constant descending)

12 Programs of Study (8 th Grade) A large emphasis of 8th grade is modeling and analyzing graphical data. Use functions to model relationships between quantities Ex. Create height function for egg drop. Height=0.5*gravity*time^2 Use Newton's third law to design a model to demonstrate and explain the resulting motion of two colliding Show students the reaction force from the egg hitting the ground Create and analyze graphical displays of data to illustrate the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass and speed of an object Let students analyze the kinetic energy of the egg graphically as height increases. Construct an argument from evidence explaining that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even when the objects are not in contact Explain relationship between gravity and the egg

13 Programs of Study (12th Grade) Investigate and analyze the motion of an object using both graphical and mathematical models Analyze graphical representations of acceleration vs. time and other parameters to solve problems. Use the principles of Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws to design, construct, and analyze combination circuits using typical components (e.g., resistors, capacitors, diodes, sources of power). Determine the amount of power the system is receiving. Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems. Ex. Given needed variables, use ideal gas law to find pressure on the balloon. Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales. Explain examples of the equations of motion.

14 State of the Art What has been done before? Stratostar: Sells high altitude balloon experiments and teaching material to junior/high schools. Cost: packages starting at $12,000 plus $200 - $400 per launch.

17 Proposed Ideas For (PADS) Idea #1 : Payload release through the use of linear actuators. Use a plastic container to house the payloads and deployment systems. A linear actuator is used to slide through hook/bracket holding the trap door in place. When RC controller is used to slide actuator back, the trap door falls, releasing the payload.

19 Proposed Ideas For (PADS) Idea #2: Payload release through the use of Servo motors Use a heavy duty styrofoam cooler with the bottom cut out to house the payloads and deployment system. The Payloads will be dropped by releasing separate doors controlled by servo motors. The servos will be controlled by a radio controller.

21 Proposed Idea 1 For (BDRS) Idea #1: Electric Anchor Winch with Line Counter The deployment and retraction of the balloon can be achieved through the use of an electric winch. The group plans to primarily attach the balloon by strong fishing line. The distance of this line will be measured using a electronic line counter.

22 Proposed Idea 2 For (BDRS) Idea #2: Electric Winch with Line Counter The retraction of the balloon can be done by the use of a drill winch. The drill can be powered by a 110 V output. The cable can be replaced with lightweight fishing line.

23 Pros vs Cons for Idea 1 Positives: Auto deployment feature allows balloon to ascend on its own. Rate of retrieval, 65ft/min=6.15min per 400ft fastest among known winches with auto deploy feature. Remote deployment and retrieval allows for ease of use. Standalone use could be utilized with 12 volt battery. Lock feature ensures no additional line is let out. Strong fishing line reduces weight of payload system. Digital line counter is a simple way to take distance measurements that can be easily mounted. Line counter features 180 screen rotation, display backlight, & measurements in feet or meters to 999m/ft Negatives: AC/DC converter has to be purchased to operate using 110v power source A mounting bracket will have to be manufactured to the winch to use the line counter

24 Pros vs Cons for Idea 2 Positives: It is easily portable Cheaper than idea 1 No conversion of power needed Negatives: Drill has to be included with price Torque to speed ratio is too high for the winch to remotely compete with the time requirements for the 10 trips within an hour.
