3 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH E. (Sherman) Wright, born 10 December 1876 near Russiaville, Indiana was a farmer in Forest Township, Clinton County, Indiana. He married Adeline Leigh (25 August June 1928) and later Blanche E. Jones. He was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church of Forest. Wright died 17 April 1969 in Kokomo and is buried beside his parents and wives in the Russiaville Cemetery. Sherman Wright s parents were Willis E. Wright and Matilda (Nutter) Wright. Matilda Wright was the granddaughter of Thomas Nutter, the first pioneer in Forest Township. Willis and Matilda Wright had three other children: Alaza (Pickering), Hazel (Mann), and Fern. Wright s talents extended beyond farming to photography, music, painting, and poetry. A photograph entitled Memories of the Past (photograph 86) shows a schoolhouse and church under a starlit sky. Wright made this image to accompany a poem written for Ruth Clingan Robertson. Gardens of Eternity, a musical composition written by Wright, can also be found on image 49. Wright's images present farm life in rural Indiana from his unique point of view. He was a farmer immersed in the routines of rural life yet he recognized and articulated the significance of the farm families world and captured the nuances of farm life. 4 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection includes 328 glass-plate negatives and 146 black-and-white photographs made by E. (Sherman) Wright between ca and ca Wright documented the people and rural landscape of Forest Township in Clinton County. His images of the countryside depict bucolic scenes of peaceful farms and winding country roads. These images capture quintessential elements of Indiana s rural landscape and show Wright s technical skills as a photographer. As a member of a small community, Wright also witnessed the hardships of farm life. Images show the effects of hail, tornados, and storms to farms and crops. Wright also photographed the bodies of deceased friends and family members, funeral wreaths, and his father, Willis Wright at the family grave site in the Russiaville Cemetery. Most portraits in the collection are not identified, but the identified subjects show that Wright photographed people from all classes of society from the junk dealer Weasal Wyant to Forest s leading citizen, George Auble. There are views of families on their porches or standing in front of gates. Many of these images include three generations within a family, with elderly men and women seated on chairs in the center of the group. Images of school groups include classes from Iles Corner and Possum Trot schools. Printed material in the collection includes one copy of the book Out of the Spirit and the Soil: A History of Forest Township of Clinton County, Indiana by D. Andrew Robertson (Forest: Iniskilin Fruit Company, 1990). Now cataloged and in the I.H.S. Library General Collection: F532.C65 R The donor found the glass plate negatives in a shed on the former Wright property ca The original order of the negatives had been disturbed over time. The donor made copy photographs from a selection of negatives, numbered them, and invited Clinton County residents to identify the people and scenes depicted. Captions written by the donor from information supplied by Clinton County residents are not enclosed in square brackets. The processors retained the order of these numbered photographs. The processors sorted and numbered the remaining glass negatives and stored them according to size, and assigned descriptions in square brackets [ ].
