3 HISTORICAL SKETCH In 1999, the Indiana National Road Association received an Indiana Heritage Research Grant (IHRG # ) to interview residents living near the national road (US 40) and Stilesville, Indiana. The project was titled Stilesville Stories: An Oral History of a National Road Town. The interview with Maude Gorham was done before the grant was given, but was included with the finished project. Stilesville, Indiana, is located in Hendricks County, Franklin Township. It was founded in 1828 and named for pioneer Jeremiah Stiles. The National Road came through the town in In 2010, Stilesville had a population of 316.
