3 Henry Norton Ord Collection [1936?] cm of textual records, 63 photographs, 20 philatelic records. Biographical sketch: Henry Norton Ord, born in Texas in 1882, worked in Horst s American hop yard operations before becoming a joint partner, and eventual managing partner of the Canadian Hop Company, which he formed with partners Thomas Livesley and Hugo Loewi in the 1920 s. The company purchased 600 acres following the draining of Sumas Lake in 1926 and was harvesting crops by Ord split with his partners in the mid 1930 s and established the Fuggle Hop Garden on Sumas Prairie and yards in the drier region of Kamloops following the introduction of mildew into Sardis. In 1936 the first hops were grown in the Kamloops region along Tranquille Road, in what is now Brock. Fields were also later planted east of Kamloops, near Campbell Creek. Operations began small, but would grow into an important local industry. By the mid 1940 s the Kamloops hop yards covered 50 acres and employed nearly 250 pickers, comprised mostly of aboriginal peoples, with a smaller number of Japanese Canadians and other ethnicities. The expansive operation included cabins and tents that could accommodate approximately 170 people by The Kamloops hop yards produced a European type of hops mixed with American and were the only producer of Yakima cluster hops in Canada. Ord advertised hops grown in the Kamloops region as being semi-seedless mild cluster hops, free of excessive spray deposits, which were more expensive than those grown in Sumas. Ord utilized contemporary technologies of the time to supplement the work of manual laborers. In 1943 the Ord Hop Yards implemented the only automatic hop picking machine in Canada, with a second machine in operation by 1950, and in 1946 Ord implemented a new device designed to safeguard against early frost damage. In 1946 the Kamloops hop yards produced the heaviest hop yield per acre ever recorded in Canada, exceeding 760 bales under the oversight of Joe Samanic, the farm foreman, and his wife, whom Ord greatly credited for the farm s success. Henry Ord was meticulous when it came to matters of his business, but found time to be an active Rotarian. Following his death on December 20, 1955 at his home in San Marino, California, Henry Ord was buried in the Presideo Military Cemetery in San Francisco alongside other members of the Ord family. Henry Norton Ord s wife, Helen Huntington Holladay, born 1897 in Los Angelas, California, took over running the company for another couple of years following the death of her husband. Mrs. Ord kept the Kamloops hop yard, but sold the Sumas fields to John I. Haas in The industry in Kamloops faltered for a variety of reasons, but the Campbell Creek yards operated until 1973 under Molson s. Mrs. Ord died in

Collection also includes records relating to Ord s personal activities and Sardis, B.C. records. The material was arranged into four groups based on the organization to which the materials appeared to relate. These groups are photographs of the Ord Hop Garden located in Kamloops, B.C. and postcards of the surrounding area, the personal journals of Henry Norton Ord from 1940, 1946, and 1947, reference books, and business, financial, and personal correspondence, as well as philatelic records. 3

Scope and Content: Series includes the personal journals of Henry Norton Ord for the years 1940, 1946, and Entries relate to Ord s farming operations, production, and business correspondence. Personal entries also consist of travel records, personal correspondence, church attendance, and Rotary involvement. The back pages of the 1946 and 1947 journals include various tables and calculations regarding farm production, newspaper articles about the farming industry, production expenses for both Kamloops and Sumas hop fields, tax statements, and records of Kamloops land acreage and value.
