14 FEATURES & OPTIONS Shinohara Perfecting System One of the many examples of Shinohara s leading edge technology is the Shinohara Perfecting System, which has been developed and refined since it was first introduced in It incorporates many patented advances made by Shinohara and offers exceptional register accuracy. Changeover from straight printing to perfecting is quick and easy. Tail edge guide system distributes optimum tension across the sheet The most important factor in any perfecting system is its ability to control the tail edge of a sheet with one side already printed. This ensures that the sheet is guided properly to the next set of grippers. Shinohara employ a tail edge guide system to ensure superior register accuracy in the perfecting mechanism. The system is positioned around the double diameter storage drum so that it can wrap the sheet around the cylinder efficiently whilst applying tension to the sheet. Thanks to the guide system, the tail edge of the sheet is fed into the gripper properly every time, ensuring consistent paper transport and reliable accuracy every time. 14 Master and subgripper system for excellent registration The paper transport system in Shinohara s perfecting system features a master and sub gripper system. In normal printing mode the master grippers handle the sheet -but during perfecting, a system of subgrippers come into play.

15 Plate cocking system with patented technology for excellent accuracy Shinohara s patented plate clamp cocking features a correlative system that enables fine adjustments to be made to plate registration without applying undue pressure to the plate. Plate registration can be adjusted during printing. The cocking adjustment range is up to 0.6mm. Pre-adjustment Post-adjustment SPC Shinohara Semi-Automatic Plate Changer Shinohara s SPC offers semi-automatic plate changing at the touch of a button, and requires no 90 bend and no tools, any operator can change plates quickly and precisely. Plate changeover takes less than a minute per unit. This speeds press makeready, increases press runtime and improves overall efficiency. One-piece machine bed In most configurations, Shinohara press units are constructed with a single machinery bed. This ensures enhanced stability and consistent quality over the lifespan of the press. Print for Packaging To meet the requirements of today s print marketplace, Shinohara has developed a range of specialist features for the packaging sector. Shinohara s presses can offer a runnable sheet thickness of up to 0.8mm and utilise hot and cold drying options including interdeck UV which enables the press to print on a wide variety of different stock, including plastics. All machinery features are designed to reduce production process time and deliver the fastest return on investment whilst maximising profitability. Latest generation operation console Through the use of multiple CPUs, Shinohara has made it possible to control all the different motors in the press simultaneously through the operation console, dramatically reducing makeready time. The operation console provides bar graphs of ink key apertures, and features a colour PC touch screen. Improved readability prevents errors and enhances the communications between operator and press. 15

16 Automatic wash up systems Keeping the blanket cylinders and ink rollers clean is integral to maintaining printing quality. Shinohara s automatic cleaning systems complete the cleaning operations at the touch of a button. Precise delivery control Shinohara s air blowers and sheet brakes ensure accurate paper delivery right down to the last printed sheet. An optional built-in infrared dryer can be installed to reduce time between production processes. Ink temperature control TCPS Gives printers the ability to run at high speeds over many hours of continual production with consistent colour and print quality. The system utilises a series of water chilled rollers and is a factory fitted option. Registration system for high speeds Feeder head based on advanced technology Pre set feeder and delivery option 16 Superior rigidity of the grippers makes consistent registration at high speed possible from feeder through the transfer units, including perfecting and delivery. A feeder head that meets the need for high speed production, with minimal adjustments required when changing sheet size, ensuring faultless paper feed performance. Enter paper size and thickness, and the machine will automatically set various feeder and delivery positions, plus the appropriate impression cylinder adjustments.

17 In-line coating unit A chamber-type doctor blade creates an even layer of varnish on the sheet, assuring high quality coating. The unit also features automatic preparation and an automatic washing facility. The entire surface of the sheet can be coated, or a spot coating can be applied with a convex resin plate. Drying systems For presses with or without an aqueous coating unit, an infrared (IR) dryer in combination with a hot air knife can be installed in the delivery. For presses with a UV coating unit or UV printing application, a UV curing system can be installed in the delivery area and between printing units. Cold UV curing system Shinohara presses utilise cold UV drying. This highly effective drying system can be used during printing with UV/Hybrid type inks. This is very important when processing substrates that are sensitive to heat. Combination machines can be fitted with both UV and IR drying systems. Interdeck UV curing unit An interdeck UV curing unit can be installed between the printing units. This reduces problems with trapping when UV/hybrid inks are used. They can also be used for special types of production, eg plastic. 7 O Clock cylinder arrangement Shinohara presses (66/75/92) presses use a 7 o clock cylinder alignment (plate, blanket and impression cylinders), preventing possible gap shock marking. It also assures better ink distribution and ink film thickness. 17

19 J D F S-NET SYSTEM The S-NET system manages the entire printing process digitally, from prepress colour management and colour control at the printing press, to the location where the press operates. S-NET creates a seamless workflow that provides high efficiency, high quality and high profitability. Shinohara CIP station Shinohara uses CIP3/CIP4 data to automatically preset ink key apertures to enable fast make ready and reduce waste. The CIP4 option also integrates with your MIS for management information. PROCESS PREPRESS MIS PRESS J D F POSTPRESS J D F SPIS Shinohara Pre-and De-Inking System The SPIS system increases efficiency and precision while substantially reducing the time required before production printing can begin, by creating ink presets with the data from the CIP3/4 station. Using CIP data, SPIS automatically creates the ideal ink film on the ink rollers and then starts printing, thus eliminating the need for operators to adjust ink keys, or to run the press to achieve the proper ink film on the rollers. SPIS increases efficiency and productivity by comparing the data for the current job with that for the next job, making it possible to quickly achieve the appropriate ink coverage. SCCS Shinohara Colour Control System SCCS controls ink density, a factor which tends to change when there are variations in printing conditions. A colour bar on a target sheet is measured by a scanning system in advance, these values are saved to SCCS as standard density values. Correction data is sent to the operation console, the ink keys are adjusted automatically. During printing, the sheets are scanned periodically and the ink key apertures are adjusted as necessary. This means that after ink density values are saved during printing, it s easy to maintain the target sheet quality. Consistent print output to meet industrial standards The most important factor in effective colour management is printing press stability. So how do we determine if the press is operating in a consistent, stable manner? A common method is printing a colour chart and measuring dot gain and colour variation ( E) Where should we measure on the sheet in order to get the most meaningful data on dot gain and colour variation? In most cases, only a small section of the sheet is measured and analysed. A colour profile is created based on analysis of the resulting data. Unfortunately with this method, if there is colour unevenness, the colours of the original (target) and printed product may not be a satisfactory match. Shinohara uses a different method which involves unique printed charts that are used to diagnose the standardisation of the press. The charts measure 3 different types of grey balance at about 110 points (for 75 series presses). The system also measures trapping and dot gain, and uses that information to adjust colour balance more precisely. This method brings the E* on the sheet to within 2.5 overall, and results in better colour balance across the entire sheet (patents are pending for portions of this process). Once printing standardisation is achieved, profile generation and colour matching follow. Printing press stabilisation is an indispensable part of an efficient printing environment - not just in terms of colour management, but in every aspect of printing production. * E = spectral measurement 19
