Improve access to EU content through thesaurus matching Laurent Béguin & Jérôme Euzenat & Paris, France Montbonnot, France November 18, 2010
Main anchors to match thesauri Terms and text (labels, definitions, notes); Hierarchical structure; Multilinguality; Annotated corpora. Laurent Béguin & Jérôme Euzenat Improve access to EU content through thesaurus matching 2 / 14
Thesaurus matcher blueprint 1. Matching independently the sub-thesaurus in each language based on their terminological information; 2. Aggregating this information into one similarity measure. 3. Extracting an alignment from these similarity using structural guides. To this we should add context-based matching... if necessary. Laurent Béguin & Jérôme Euzenat Improve access to EU content through thesaurus matching 3 / 14
Terms Most of the terms are compound (phrases or sentence parts). They would benefit from normalisation (stemming) before being used with different techniques: Classical information retrieval techniques (e.g., TF*IDF). It can be amplified by neighbours and multi-linguality. More precise, but costly, linguistic techniques (recognise the function of words and infer the relation between phrases). Laurent Béguin & Jérôme Euzenat Improve access to EU content through thesaurus matching 4 / 14
External structure skos:broader, skos:narrower provide hierarchical organisation of terms. It is useful to preserve these hierarchies through matching. skos:related has a too weak semantics to be reliable as a structural constraint. It can be used for amplifying terms. skos:topconceptof skos:inscheme skos:hastopconcept provides a higher order structure which may be used for constraining extraction (all concepts of a scheme should be matched with concepts of the same scheme). These techniques can be used to help extracting alignments which do not contradict this structure. Laurent Béguin & Jérôme Euzenat Improve access to EU content through thesaurus matching 5 / 14
Multilinguality Use the various languages for expanding bag-of-words (increases recall); or use them for matching within one language (increases precision); or use them for cross-language matching (increases recall). seal <--> seal phoque <-/-> sceau Laurent Béguin & Jérôme Euzenat Improve access to EU content through thesaurus matching 6 / 14

Conclusion Ontology matching techniques could be used for thesaurus matching but they have to be adapted to this context. Preliminary results are encouraging but require serious evaluation. Perspectives: Context-based techniques (from multi-indexed corpus) A recent paper at the ontology matching workshop shows that composing may be helpful.
