1 Standards Update January 2016 ANSI Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standards (CGATS) Standards Published CGATS meets jointly twice a year with the USTAG and the Idealliance Print Properties Committee to develop the US position on standards being developed in ISO/TC130 and to collaborate on work in common to all groups Meetings April 14 16, Ryerson University, Toronto, CA October 20 22, X Rite, Grand Rapids, Michigan 2016 Meetings April 5 7, Konica Minolta, Vienna, VA August 9 11, RIT, Rochester, NY ISO and ISO , Graphic technology Input data for characterization of four colour process have been nationally adopted as CGATS (IT8.7/3) and CGATS (IT8.7/4) respectively. International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 130 (ISO/TC130) The following working groups met at the meeting of ISO/TC130 in Seoul, South Korea November 2 8, WG1 Terminology ISO 5776, Graphic Technology Symbols for Text Proof Correction Specifies symbols for use in copy preparation and proof correction in alphabetic languages and in logographic languages. It is applicable to texts submitted for correction whatever their nature or presentation (manuscripts, typescripts, printer s proofs, etc.) and for marking up copy for all methods of composition. Publication is expected in early WG2 Prepress data exchange ISO , Colour data exchange format (CxF/X) Part 2: Scanner target data (CxF/X 2) Defines an exchange format for target input values, colour and process control data relating to scanner targets (and the associated metadata necessary for its proper interpretation) in electronic form. This document includes the use of a CustomResource element within the CXF framework to define a minimum of set of data for exchange and identify the data as being part of ISO , Colour data exchange format (CxF/X) Part 3: Output target data (CxF/X 3) Defines an exchange format for target input values, colour and process control data relating to output targets for printers of all types (and the associated metadata necessary for its proper interpretation) in electronic form. This document includes the use of a CustomResource element within the CXF framework to define a minimum of set of data for exchange and identify the data as being part of ISO 19445, Metadata for graphic arts workflow XMP metadata for image and document proofing Specifies the set of metadata to be used to communicate the approval status, proof preparation and viewing parameters for images and documents that are used in the graphic arts print production workflow. It is currently in the FDIS stage of balloting; publication is expected in early 2016.

2 ISO , Graphic technology Prepress digital data exchange Colour targets for input scanner calibration ISO has been updated to a multi part standard with the original standard being Part 1. This part has been updated with minor editorial changes to the date and references to part 2. Annex (an informative annex) which refers to data file format was considered to be out of date and has been deleted. This document is currently in the FDIS stage of balloting with publication expected in early ISO , Graphic technology File format for quality control software and metadata Part 1: Print requirements exchange (PRX) PRX is a file format whose objective is to enable Brand Owner or Print Buyer to provide print requirements to printer as well as to all involved stakeholders in production workflow. This is currently a working draft. ISO , Graphic technology File format for quality control software and metadata Part 2: Print quality exchange (PQX) Specifies a simple extensible format for the exchange of print quality data and metadata between quality control applications including but not limited to color measurement, process control and quality management systems. This is currently a working draft. WG2/TF2 PDF/X ISO 19593, Graphic technology Use of PDF to associate processing steps and content data Describes a method for storing data in a PDF (objects and metadata) that correspond to production steps of printed products other than the actual printing. This document is currently in the DIS stage of balloting. ISO , Graphic technology Prepress digital data exchange using PDF Part 9: Complete exchange of printing data (PDF/X 6) and partial exchange of printing data with external profile reference (PDF/X 6p and PDF/X 6n) using PDF 2.0 Specifies the use of ISO (PDF 2.0) for the dissemination of digital data intended for print reproduction. The document is currently a committee draft. WG2/TF3 Variable Data Exchange PDF/VT application notes This document is copyrighted by the PDF Association and is posted on both the NPES and PDF Association website and can be accessed from the NPES website here: Active support will be forthcoming from the PDF Association where possible for translation into other languages. ISO/CD , Graphic technology Variable content replacement Part 1: Using PDF/X 4 for variable content replacement (PDF/VCR 1) This document describes the use of PDF as a variable content page template for printing applications where variable content data is substituted into the template live in real time immediately ahead of the rendering and printing processes.

3 WG3 Process Control and Related Metrology ISO/CD , Graphic technology Process control for the manufacture of half tone colour separation, proofs and production prints Part 7: Proofing processes working directly from digital data This part of ISO specifies aim values (or sets of aim values) and tolerances for the primary parameters specified in ISO for digital proof printing. ISO/TS , Graphic Technology Requirements for printed matter utilizing printing technologies for the commercial and industrial production Part 1: Parameters and Measurement measures This Technical Specification is expected to be used to measure prints from digital printing systems although the metrics are general and may be applied to other kinds of print. Publication is expected in early ISO/TS , Graphic Technology Requirements for printed matter utilizing printing technologies for the commercial and industrial production Part 2: Commercial Production Printing This part of this Technical Specification identifies the minimum essential metrics plus some other optional metrics for printing sheets produced for the general commercial marketplace. ISO/PWI 20654, Spot colour tone value This international standard defines a metric which specifies a method for the determination of the tone value of a non process ink, commonly known as a spot colour, tone which produces a visually uniform spacing of the tones between the unprinted substrate and the 100% coverage, known as the solid ink. WG4 Media and Materials Current projects ISO/WD , Graphic technology Colour and transparency of printing ink sets for four colour printing Part 1: Sheet fed and heat set web offset lithographic printing ISO/WD , Graphic technology Colour and transparency of printing ink sets for four colour printing Part 2: Coldset offset lithographic printing ISO 12636, Graphic technology Blankets for offset printing This standard defines vocabulary, specifies test methods, characteristics, ordering and labelling information for blankets for offset printing. ISO/DIS , Determination of tack of paste inks and vehicles by a rotary Tackmeter This is a new work item that was started by IGT as their method of calibrating a tack meter. The US, Canada and Mexico have used tack meters that are calibrated to an ASTM standard for many years. The results will differ from what is proposed in this standard. This will change the way people assess the tackiness of an offset ink. The financial impact on printers in North America is unknown at this time and may be negligible; however, this will require changing the numbers and measurements of tackmeters. WG5 Ergonomics Saefty ISO 12643, Graphic technology Safety requirements for graphic technology equipment and systems This series of standards provides safety specifications for the design and construction of new equipment used in prepress systems, printing press systems, binding and finishing systems, converting systems and stand alone platen presses.

While the current architecture works well in many areas, new potential applications are emerging and it is believed that tomorrow's color comunication will require a more flexible and extensible system. Within ICC Labs, ICC has developed a new specification, iccmax, that will address many of these new requirements. iccmax is not intended as a replacement for ICC.1, the existing architecture, but as an extension or alternative where requirements cannot be fully met by ICC.1. Currently the areas covered by ICC Labs include: Multi spectral Medical Imaging Image Capture/Digital Photography Package Printing Color Management on Internet Fine Art Color Information Archiving ICC welcomes input from vendors and users on areas that are not covered well by the current ICC architecture.
